Black Crowes in MTL

Holy fack, these guys are back and they mean it. Greatest rock and roll band on earth, one of the best performances of pure rock and roll I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot.)

After the opener, Stare it Cold, Chris says 'Welcome to a special Sunday service with the Black Crowes' and they launch in Go Tell The Congregation... It was going to be that kind of night...

I went into the show wanting to hear 2 songs, No Speak No Slave and Pimper's Paradise (they've covered it a few times, it was a long shot but what the hell) but they didn't play either of these. Instead, the picked out Descending and Thick n Thin as the songs I had forgot about all these years and wow were they good.

I won't go too much into it, but the crowd was AWESOME and LOUD, the brothers were having fun, the stage setup was very nice, just a few candleabras and candles, the music was LOUD, and best of all Marc Ford and Gorman were back and loving every minute. There were times that Rich and Marc were staring back across the stage at each other with big shit-eating grins all over them.

Awesome awesome show. You Torontonians are gonna love it. And if you get a Slave I'll be a little upset, but not too much. Just a little. If this were a true review I guess I'd have to be critical... How Much For Your Wings sucked. And the jam on it sucked. That was the only low point of the show, but it was a good pee-break.

I loved this show. Sunday service with the Crowes. Amen.

Yup, there were 2 or 3 stands set up.... I recognised 2 of the guys as they were from Ottawa... Hambone or something like that and his buddy? They're at every show... I don't know their real names though...

Looks like a great show, I wish I was there. But I decided to pass on Montreal when I realized I would be seeing the Black Crowes in the opening spot for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers this summer. Plus bonnaroo is a big time bonus, I think they should be headlining over Widespread Panic for one of the nights.

I haven't seen this reunion tour yet but I have to 100% agree with you AD on your statement of the "Greatest rock and roll band on earth" I saw this exact lineup (minus different bassists) in 1996 through 1997 and they were by far and away the best live rock and roll band then and I don't see why they would have lost a step in the time that has passed. If anything they might be better as Chris Robinson and hopefully Marc Ford aren't strung out on drugs anymore.

If we do get "No Speak No Slave" in Toronto, I'll think of you AD. Though I would have rather have had "Descending" which we will not get now as they did it in Montreal. Though I did get "Pimper's Paradise" in 1997 at the Molson Amphitheatre.

Crowes played for (I'm just wildly guessing here) about 2 hours. 930-1130.

I gotta say, I saw the Crowes a few times back in the 96-97 days as well TimmyB, and you'll be pleased to know that Chris is singing better than ever. He's got a full-on hardon for the Faces it sounds like, and man is it sweet. By the end of the show you could tell that either his voice was getting tired or he was out of breath, but when he wants to belt it out, it sounds soo nice. Gotta give some respect to Eddie too, he was cracking Sven and Chris up with some 'frilly' little runs in the outro to Descending, it was great. He's an overlooked talent, IMO. And he's Canadian taboot. Not like that matters, but still... eh.

The 22-20s opened, and they sucked. It must be brutal being another rock and roll band touring with the Crowes. No matter how hard you try nobody remembers you at the end of the night. Except me. The guitar player thought it would be fun to drown everyone out. (And no it wasn't the sound guy, the guitarist kept going back to his amp and cranking it). Forgettable music.

Wished I could go last night, but after buying a 52.00 ticket for MMW, and a 43.00 ticket for Wilco this week, another 50 bucks for the Crowes just wasn't in the books. I shelled out 2 bucks for bluegrass jam night instead.

Glad it was good!

Yeah, I pretty much got my ass handed to me in Hampton Beach this weekend. The line-up the Crowes have assembled is just smoking. Two totally different shows - Friday night was all songs, zero jamming except for an extended middle section in My Morning Song. Saturday night was ALL jamming all night, and Chris Kuroda was stellar on the lights.

We were staying right next door to the venue, heard the soundchecks both days, met the band and Kate Hudson. Funny story, on Friday afternoon the Robinson brothers were out throwing a football around on the beach and Chris lost his wedding band. Chris, Kate and the roadies were combing the beach while another crew went to Home Depot to try and find a metal detector. Not sure if they ever found it. There's your Us Weekly story from the weekend.

Dave-O I don't know how to be polite about this, but fuck you! :) Hahah, just kidding. I really should have come out to Hampton for these, those look like smokin' setlists.

I bet Sean was creaming his pants for a solid 2 days straight.

heh heh, they're pretty much playing Slave every other night. Evil Eye sounded terrible in soundcheck so we were surprised to hear it.

Other random comments...

They were loud as hell.

Steve Gorman's hands are beat to shit. I don't think there's the top layer of skin left anywhere. Poor guy jumps right into the midst of touring after 4 years off...

The Instant Live discs sound (and look) amazing. The packaging has come a long way from the moe. 2003 fall tour. And they've got the 2 guitarists panned to opposite sides. Sweet.

DaveO said it all, un-frickin-believable!

Every tune I wanted to hear (except maybe Descending- so an f/u to you AD!), some surprises, lovely covers and a sweet ass venue.

I love coming out of a show (with it on cd nonetheless) and walking next door into the bar at your hotel. I mean from final notes to cold beer in less than 5 minutes.

Funny story: I had a cd single from One Mirror Too Many with me for autographs (with Pimpers Paradise bside AD!) and Chris takes it to sign and says "Oh man, you've got the single. Not even buying the albums, man oh man......" Total rock star prick. I think I like him more now.

Cheers to the Hampton Beach cop who pulled up on my brother yelling in the alley with a bottle of SoCo in his hand- and not arresting him!

I had so much fun watching those boys play, and it looked they had more fun than I did....

Have fun TO!

Sean
