Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Psychedelic Pill

Neil Young has said that his new album with his on-again, off-again backing band, Crazy Horse, “Psychedelic Pill†(Warner Bros.), was inspired in part by the journey through the past that he undertook in writing his new memoir, “Waging Heavy Peace.†The book lumbers and rambles through six decades of Young’s life and thoughts, often compellingly. The record does the same.

“Psychedelic Pill†is Young’s longest album, which is saying something. It runs to nearly ninety minutes, and almost a third of it is taken up by the opener, “Driftin’ Back,†which begins as a gentle exercise in folk nostalgia but then blossoms into the thick, loud guitar rock that has characterized Crazy Horse’s output since 1969. The lyrics, which are few and far between, worry that the promises of the nineteen-sixties have been squandered by corporations and technology, and it would be an understatement to say that they are idiosyncratic. At one point, Young notes that he loved Picasso until “a tech giant came along and turned him into wallpaper.†At another point, he resolves to get himself “a hip-hop haircut.â€

Though “Driftin’ Back†is sprawling, it’s not exactly unfocussed. Young argues, in that song and elsewhere, that any attempt to flatten or commercialize art work (wallpaper, of course, does both) should be avoided at all costs. Elsewhere on the record, Young trots out “For the Love of Man,†a sentimental manifesto that has existed, in some form, since at least the early eighties; delivers a straightforward narrative of a relationship broken by alcoholism, in “Ramada Innâ€; and celebrates Canadian pride in the short, jaunty “Born in Ontario.†Not everything works; the spiky if slight title track appears in two different versions, neither entirely successful, and “She’s Always Dancing†sounds like a half-remembered “Like a Hurricane.â€

When the album succeeds, though, it does so on an epic scale. The sixteen-minute-long “Walk Like a Giant†has an eerie whistled hook and a chip on its shoulder that closely resembles the one in “Driftin’ Backâ€: “Me and some of my friends / We were gonna save the world,†Young sings. “But then the weather changed and the white got stained and it fell apart / And it breaks my heart.†The backing vocals chime in with a rueful reminder: “Think about how close we came.†The last minute dissolves into a collage of clanging percussion, industrial-strength guitars, and wordless harmonies, a fitting microcosm of the power and the sense of community at the core of this protean, exhausting, energizing record. - Ben Greenman

The Bright Light Social Hour - The Bright Light Social Hour

The Bright Light Social Hour is an American rock band from Austin, Texas. Born out of a university art-rock collective, the band first gained attention in Austin from their incendiary live performances and innovative vision of rock and roll. Melding southern rock, hard dance, psychedelic blues, and deep soul, their debut full-length album led to heightening critical acclaim, national touring, and a rare sweep of six awards at the SXSW 2011 Austin Music Awards, including Band of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year.

Recorded in five studios around Austin during summer 2010, their self-titled debut is founded on sun-drenched optimism, raucous youth, and an innovative brew of American music. Producer Danny Reisch of Good Danny’s utilized the best elements of vintage and modern recording to achieve a sound both forward-looking and evocative of 1970s hi-fi. The first track, “Shanty,†pairs southern rock with hard disco, featuring the searing slide licks of guitarist Curtis Roush. Following the lean, exuberant stomp of “Bare Hands Bare Feet,†the band settles into the dark psychedelic funk of “La Piedra De La Iguana,†led by keyboardist A.J. Vincent’s dusky vocal and Farfisa organ work. Throughout the middle of the record, the solemn rhythm and blues of “Detroit†is juxtaposed with “Back And Forth,†a four-on-the-floor disco-funk romp. On “Garden Of The Gods,†the album’s penultimate 10-minute epic, the band evolves from stately ballroom Americana to an expansive, ensemble anthem, conjuring up their limber and unrelenting live sets. The fiery “Rhubarb Jam†closes out the record, featuring the agile, booming funk of bassist Jack O’Brien and drummer Joseph Mirasole.

Following their album release, The Bright Light Social Hour have embarked on a heavy touring rotation, playing over two hundred shows throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They have performed in front of thousands of new fans, most notably at SXSW 2012, Wakarusa Festival and opening for Aerosmith at the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City. Chronicling their adventures, the band has released a series of self-produced tour documentaries depicting their life on the road.

The Bright Light Social Hour is currently writing new material for a second full-length album with plans to return to the studio in 2013. - http://www.thebrightlightsocialhour.com

Gov’t Mule - Holy Haunted House (Oct 31, 2007 St. Paul, MN)

The entire 10.31.07 Gov’t Mule performance from The O’Shaughnessy Theatre in St. Paul, MN - including a complete version of the Led Zeppelin album “Houses of the Holyâ€

The Gov’t Mule Halloween Spectacular got underway with a moody Play With Fire and a hot Time To Confess. A Million Miles From Yesterday got the crowd singing along and the Rocking Horse that followed kept’em dancing. After a dark Larger Than Life, Fallen Down beautifully wound it’s way into The Other One Jam. Danny, the guitar tech for Grace Potter was dressed as Farmer for Halloween and made the onstage guitar switch with Warren before the set ending Blind Man In The Dark.

The second set of the night was a first for the band, crew and fans alike. The band, with the assistance of Audley Freed, played from cover to cover Led Zeppelin’s Houses Of The Holy. From the opening track The Song Remains The Same to the album ending The Ocean, Gov’t Mule put their signature stamp on this rock’n’roll classic album. With Audley onstage the whole set, the guitars were fat and crunchy, the bass driving, the keys rockin’ and the drums thundering.

At the end of the Zeppelin set, the crowds roaring cheers were deafening and brought the band and Audley back to deliver an encore worthy of the previous set. Come On Into My Kitchen segued into 32/20 Blues which teased Come On Into My Kitchen to end an unbelievable Halloween night.

Gov’t Mule - The Orpheum Theatre, Boston, MA 10-31-2008

Gov’t Mule plowed their way through a powerhouse Halloween show at Boston’s Orpheum Theatre that served up familiar Mule tunes, and a set of impressive Pink Floyd covers.

Following an opening set by Back Door Slam that deserves to be mentioned, Mule inaugurated the Hollows’ Eve celebration with “Brighter Days.†As Warren Haynes, the band’s driving force, dove into some six-string fretwork, Mule’s new bassist, Jorgen Carlsson, used his second public performance with the band to demonstrate intense musical prowess and woo Mule fans with a rockin’ stage presence that outdoes his predecessor, Andy Hess.

After jamming their way through tunes like “Brand New Angel†and “Trane,†the Mule tore into an instrumental version of the Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen†that took the already ecstatic atmosphere of the crowd to new heights. Haynes is a product of his influences, and years of touring with The Allman Brothers Band has helped him refine those tight slide licks that make his dueling leads with Derek Trucks amongst the best on the circuit. And having spent recent years filling the shoes of Jerry Garcia with the surviving members of The Dead, Haynes has had some serious experience jamming in those outer-worldly areas of the auditory spectrum. But, even with hints of Jerry, Duane and Jimi in his leads, at all times, Haynes’ tone is unmistakably that of Warren Haynes.

Halloween has always been a flagship holiday in the jam band community, second only to New Year’s Eve. And with a band like Gov’t Mule, expecting something special is more than fair. Phish are attributed with getting the Halloween spirit going in the jam world with a performance of The Beatles’ The White Album in its entirety on 10.31.94. Years later, we’ve seen costumes and covers of all colors and genres. But, on Halloween 2008, Mule outdid themselves with a second set packed full of Pink Floyd tunes from throughout the psychedelic pioneers’ career.

From the opening notes of the reverb-heavy “One Of These Days,†everyone in attendance collectively flipped their shit over what they knew would become a concert that would be discussed for years to come. As the set moved past “Fearless,†and “Pigs On The Wing†equipped with an inflated pig to the right of the stage, Mule moved into “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.†With sheet music in front of band members, it was clear that a great deal of effort went into pulling off their Floyd “costume.†Not only did they nail the composition, but Haynes even managed to replicate the near-perfect guitar tone of Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.

In addition to dozens of lasers piercing through a smogged theatre, the effects of a run through the first five tunes off Dark Side Of The Moon was enough to make any attendee melt in their seat. However, the highlight of the set was a funky rendition of “Have A Cigar,†featuring drummer Matt Abts on vocals. One of Haynes’ strong suits is his ability to mesh Black Sabbath-heavy guitar riffs with a sense of Headhunters-era Herbie Hancock funk, and “Cigar†just so happened to be the Floyd tune that brought that out the most in him.

The second set wrapped with “Wish You Were Here,†and an encore of Mule tunes. “A Million Miles From Yesterday†and “Blind Man In The Dark†brought the shenanigans of Gov’t Mule’s Halloween to a close. Calling their show a success would be an understatement. Given the high hopes of attendees before they got to the Orpheum, most bands would have had a rough time meeting people’s expectations, but for the man who regularly fills the shoes of Duane Allman and Jerry Garcia, sending people home feeling satisfied required nothing more than practice, sheet music and some extra-trippy lighting. With Halloween ‘08 behind us, talk of Mule’s follow-up for ‘09 can be expected right around the corner. - Andrew Bruss

Gov’t Mule - Tower Theatre, Philadelphia, PA 10-31-2009

Chaos from the previous evening had yet to be stuffed back into the hole that it crawled out from. You could gauge the craziness of this year’s Halloween in several ways. One way was hop into the back seat of a cab early the next morning and find it filled with the putrid stink of an evening of over-indulgence and what appeared to be the remains of some spooky rice dish regurgitated in the vilest of manners. The cabby apologized in a heavy Indian accent saying, “Crazy night in the city man.†It’s the kind of evening you would imagine Mick Jagger and Keith Richards shared more than once in their heydays. I’m sure that the band members from Gov’t Mule had also danced with that kind of devil before, but you don’t hear about Danny Louis snorting his dad’s ashes cut with a line of coke. Sure, Warren Haynes is a stud on the guitar, but the ladies aren’t exactly tossing their panties at him like they did with Jagger. However, what Gov’t Mule lacked in quintessential Rolling Stones rock star unruliness they compensated for in their musicianship. It just made sense that Gov’t Mule covered the Rolling Stones when you listen to how deeply both bands are rooted in American blues and R&B. No, it was not quite the death defying genre leap heard at previous Halloweens, but their performance was well executed and Matt Abts take on “Shattered†was more fun than a barrel of monkeys!

The setlist onstage gave away the trick before the treat. Someone had created it and then changed their minds. Instead of waiting to cover the Rolling Stones during the second set at the Tower Theater, they jumped right in and played the second set first. We were treated to 12 first time played Rolling Stones covers spanning from the classic 1971 album Sticky Fingers to 1978’s Some Girls, and all that was around and in between. Lending Gov’t Mule a hand was guitarist/vocalist Jackie Greene and saxophonist Steve Elson. The set they unveiled proved that all of the musicians onstage were capable of handling multiple duties.

Haynes and Greene tackled the intricate Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood manner of weaving rhythm and lead guitar, while both clearly expressed their own stylistic flourishes. Greene took Keith Richards’ playing style and smoothed out the edges, while Haynes’ slide work was more a cross between Brian Jones and Ronnie Wood. Mule’s frontman was no Mick Jagger, and opener “Under My Thumb†lacked the song’s classic kick as the show took flight. Boundless pompous rock attitude and stage swagger did not suddenly emerge from the relatively subdued Haynes, whose first set was strongly played but found him staying out of the limelight while he let two of his bandmates strut their stuff. The haphazard beginnings fell away by the fourth song when Danny Louis traded spots with Greene for “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’.†Louis played a raw, gutsy guitar that was cranked full blast as he shimmied back and forth between Haynes and bassist Jorgen Carlsson. His Richards-like leg bends, power chords, and plethora of rock & roll faces were just the catalyst needed to get the Tower shaking.

Greene was good for a backing vocal on “Angie,†as Haynes wrapped his patient tones around the chorus in his unique way of singing every word like each of us were a lone audience member and he was talking directly to us. Greene earned his keep on a majestic version of “Ventilator Blues†as he traded guitar licks with Haynes before switching gears to work the harmonica. The action shifted quickly as Louis traded trumpet blows with Greene’s harp and Elson’s sax. Louis’ hands never left the keys as they did a dirty dance that really knocked our boots around. By all accounts, it’s doubtful The Rolling Stones themselves sounded this good when they played the Tower in 2002.

Gov’t Mule had teased “Play With Fire†the night before and they set aside their reggae take to keep the set steeped in the Stones’ classic rock sound. Greene’s added harmonies and Louis’ bravado on keys matched the hard-hitting bass pokes that Carlsson was tossing out. The Carlsson-era Mule has all the crudeness and excitement of the Allen Woody days without sounding like a step in reverse. The balcony was swaying and bouncing hard as Haynes steered us into “Paint it Black.†Drinks sitting on the edge of the balcony were actually sloshing in their cups. Haynes finished The Rolling Stones anthem with a simple shout to the audience, “This is what we call Mule-o-ween.†If only Abts had stepped back out for “Bitch†then that old outspoken lady of a song would have spread her legs wide and our costumed crowd would have charged right in. No matter, the second Haynes and Louis got their hands on “Brown Sugar†all was good as they faked an ending and gave us another round of house light flashes, arm waves, and sing-a-long (“I say yeah, yeah, yeah, WOOO!) to finish the set.By the middle of the first set all bets were off as Matt Abts ran out from behind his kit to play the role of Jagger on “Shattered.†Carlsson rotated into Abts’ spot on drums while Louis slapped the bass. Abts’ imitation of Mick Jagger was so fucking awesome that if you just caught one song all evening it should have been “Shattered.†Just seeing Abts do Jagger’s chicken strut back and forth across the stage in his tight white pants and black kneepads was priceless. Sure, his singing wasn’t perfect, but when he yanked a banana out of his crotch and sang, “Look at me, I’m in tatters,†we lost our shit. It was comedic and rocking all at the same time, and it showcased some seldom seen musical abilities within Abts, Carlsson, and Louis.

The cheers started to dissipate as we wandered through a sea of red and white Phillies garb. Those who chose to put the game aside and live in the moment of the concert were the lucky ones. Gov’t Mule’s new album, By A Thread (released October 26 on Evil Teen Records), was fresh on the record shelves as Haynes and crew dug through six tracks, including an extremely inspired “Monday Mourning Meltdown.†This new bit of Gov’t Mule peculiarity featured everything from Louis’ jazzy key work to Haynes’ thickly textured, head-throbbing guitar. He extended a peaking jam in around the fifth minute of the song that made me wonder where his wild, howling Gibson guitar had been earlier in the evening. His left hand bent the strings as his right played out some acrobatic fly swats that set the jam on fire. It was the first real face-scrunch I had seen from his lion-like mug all night.

“Going Out West†could have been spotted from miles away with its familiar, flamboyant sounding low end intro. Haynes’ Peter Gunn tease was just more candy in the bag as he pummeled costumed fans with the Spy Hunter theme song. The crowd that had been perched out in the hallways watching the game now raced back in for the colossal encore as a cover of T. Rex’s classic “Bang A Gong†launched us back into raucous Halloween fun. It wasn’t a Rolling Stones cover, but the Chuck Berry inspired ditty fit well inside that realm of inspiration that drove The Rolling Stones. The transition back into “Going Out West†rumbled as Gov’t Mule sent us out with a huge finale to another memorable Mule-o-ween filled with love and hope and sex and dreams. The extended intro to “Blind Man in the Dark†had a bit of a Dr. John “Walk on Guilded Splinters†echo, complete with Louis’ eerie, Thriller-like sound effects. This was the longest, most experimental jam of the evening, and even though its predecessors would be more talked about, it featured some of the best playing buried within its well-constructed walls. Abts switched the grip on his drumsticks and started a snazzy little shuffle on his cymbals as Louis and Elson worked out a stellar bit of bebop that ached to be a new fangled Peanuts theme song. The backset trio ripped the center of the song clear out and jazzed up the jam proper. - Jake Krolic
