Phish - Star Lake 98

On August 11, 1998 Phish played at Star Lake Amphitheatre in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. This was their second visit to Star Lake of seven to-date starting in 1997 and including 2003, 2009 and 2012 shows previously released at LivePhish.com.

The Star Lake 98 show was the 20th of summer to showcase the loose, experimental vibe of a tour that began in Europe and jumped to the United States enroute to the summer’s ending Lemonwheel festival. The introduction of a never-before-played cover each night earned the tour the nickname “summer of covers†from fans and Star Lake’s contribution was a Trench Town Rock opener. Star Lake also saw the return of Time Loves A Hero which was played for the first time in a decade and segued out of a sultry Wolfman’s Brother. Julius, an extended Fee outro (during which hip Pittsburghians clapped along on the 2 and 4) and deep renditions of Maze and Reba set the stage for set II. The second set featured a super-swinging, ethereal Runaway Jim that foreshadowed 2011’s Storage Jam and an unusual pairing of Meat > Limb By Limb. Local flavor of the Commonwealth was provided by Bittersweet Motel (the title of the Phish documentary recorded during Europe ’98 dates) and Wilson, King of Prussia. - Kevin Shapiro

Phish - Star Lake 98 DVD

All new 2-DVD set, recorded live on August 11, 1998 at Star Lake Amphitheatre in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. The Star Lake 98 show was the 20th of summer to display the loose, experimental vibe of a tour that began in Europe and jumped to the United States enroute to the summer’s ending Lemonwheel festival.

“Star Lake 98†is the only full video show available in the Archives from Phish’s Summer 1998 tour. The 2-DVD set was created from archival VHS videotapes of the 3-camera lawn screen feed. The audio was mixed from multi-track masters in stereo PCM and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround (aspect Ratio 4:3, regions 1-6 NTSC) and clocks in at just about 2 hours and 50 minutes.

The introduction of a never-before-played cover each night earned the tour the nickname “the summer of covers†from fans and band alike and Star Lake’s contribution was “Trench Town Rock.†Star Lake also saw the return of “Time Loves A Hero†which was played for the first time in a decade and segued out of a sultry “Wolfman’s Brother.†An extended “Fee†extro and hot renditions of “Maze†and “Reba†set the stage for set II’s super-swinging, ethereal “Runaway Jim†and the unusual pairing of “Meat†> “Limb By Limbâ€. Eric Clapton - Slowhand (Deluxe Edition 2012)

After the guest-star-drenched No Reason to Cry failed to make much of an impact commercially, Eric Clapton returned to using his own band for Slowhand. The difference is substantial — where No Reason to Cry struggled hard to find the right tone, Slowhand opens with the relaxed, bluesy shuffle of J.J. Cale’s “Cocaine†and sustains it throughout the course of the album. Alternating between straight blues (“Mean Old Friscoâ€), country (“Lay Down Sallyâ€), mainstream rock (“Cocaine,†“The Coreâ€), and pop (“Wonderful Tonightâ€), Slowhand doesn’t sound schizophrenic because of the band’s grasp of the material. This is laid-back virtuosity — although Clapton and his band are never flashy, their playing is masterful and assured. That assurance and the album’s eclectic material make Slowhand rank with 461 Ocean Boulevard as Eric Clapton’s best albums. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The Deluxe Edition features four Slowhand session outtakes (three of them previously unreleased) “Looking At The Rainâ€, “Albertaâ€, “Greyhound Bus†and “Stars, Strays And Ashtraysâ€. A week before the Slowhand sessions commenced, the band performed at London’s Hammersmith Odeon. The Deluxe Edition features 9 tracks from the Hammersmith Odeon concert. Songs featured at the Hammersmith Odeon show include “Tell The Truthâ€, “Knocking On Heaven’s Doorâ€,â€Can’t Find My Way Homeâ€, “Stormy Mondayâ€, “Badgeâ€, “I Shot The Sheriff†and “Laylaâ€.

Chris Robinson Brotherhood - Big Moon Ritual

With subtle undertones reminiscent of his Black Crowe days, Chris Robinson takes a new turn with his latest project. Comprised of Adam MacDougall (Black Crowes) on keyboard, George Sluppick on drums, Mark Dutton on bass, and Neal Casal on guitar, Chris fronts a solid lineup that dabble in the sounds of yesterday, adding to it a style of their own. Big Moon Ritual, the debut album from the Brotherhood, channels the spirit of the likes of Dwayne Allman and Jerry Garcia. Put together a jam band arrangement and a funky synthesizer and you get a combination all its own. And yet one can relive the sounds that inspired the generations of the Allmans and the Dead through this new material. This project takes on a more soulful and serene sound, as opposed to Chris’ former work with the Black Crowes. Every song is an extended story, a drawn out journey through the progression of instrumentals, with vocal entwined between.

The album opens with “Tulsa Yesterday,†which begins with a psychedelic intro and a mellow, carefree melody. The track is laced with the eloquent works of MacDougall on keyboard. The hit track on this is “Rosalee.†With its upbeat rhythm and catchy chorus, this is sure to please any Crowes fan ready to pass the torch and embrace Robinson’s new endeavor. Although unlike most of his prior material, Robinson’s soulful vocals shine through on each track. “Tomorrow Blues†offers up a chance for each artist to show off his talents, from guitar to keyboard solos to the harmonies in the chorus line. The group seems to flow well with one another, a must for any ‘jam band’ style. They seem to play on never missing a step, as if they’re never quite ready to hit that last note.

Big Moon Ritual is a unique undertaking for the Black Crowes’ front man. Maybe a little unexpected, maybe a little out of the comfort zone for those ‘Hard to Handle’ fans. Whatever the feeling, the band puts together an excellent mixture of sounds. Robinson’s country flare, mixed with a little blues and soul, offers his fans a new taste of his talents. Something to listen to when you’re ready to mellow out and escape the fast pace of reality for a while. - Don Tice

Chris Robinson Brotherhood - The Magic Door

The seven tracks here stem from the same sessions as those on “Big Moon Ritualâ€, and it may be useful to see “The Magic Door†as a kind of second set, opening as it does with a sauntering, good-time take on Hank Ballard’s “Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go†in the tradition of “Good Lovin’†or “Promised Landâ€.

This time, Neal Casal’s vibrational guitar solos don’t feel quite so prominent, though there is a spectacularly pining one that cuts a swathe through “Appaloosaâ€, a blue-eyed and wasted ballad in the same mould as “Star Or Stone†on the last record. If one of the Brotherhood take the spotlight, it’s probably Adam MacDougall, who appears bent on summoning the ghosts of most every Dead keyboardist he can recall, plus a bunch of even more cosmic Moog practitioners, often in the space of one extended song.

It’s most noticeable on “Vibration And Light Suiteâ€, one of those curiously funky songs in the vein of “Eyes Of The Worldâ€, in which MacDougall touches on the styles of both Keith Godchaux and Ned Lagan. The Brotherhood keep pulling and tugging the song into inspired new directions, until it passes through a jam and devolves into musique concrete.

The standout, though, is possibly “Someday Past The Sunsetâ€, which channels the same kind of roadhouse blues that Dylan focused on for “Together Through Lifeâ€, then takes it some place notably more menacing and elevated.

It all wraps up with “Wheel Don’t Rollâ€, which feels like a mellowed sequel to “Tulsa Yesterdayâ€, the track which opened “Big Moon Ritualâ€. A neat way to wrap up that second set, really: I can’t help thinking the whole bunch of songs would’ve worked better as a big and coherent two CD set, but that’s a small quibble. Wonderful music, and the extraordinary promise of what they must be like live moves ever more sharply into focus. - John Mulvey

Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band - Live At The Main Point, 1975

One show, held as a benefit for the ~270 seat coffeehouse, with Springsteen & The E Street Band the sole act on the bill. The show was emceed by DJ Ed Sciaky and began just after 9.00pm. It was not a true simulcast, rather it was broadcast by WMMR-FM on about a 2 hour delay the same night. Interestingly, Springsteen almost backed out of his promise to allow the show to be broadcast. He wanted to play new songs that were still unfinished - it took a concentrated effort by Sciaky on the day of the concert to talk Bruce round. An attendee review of the show from 1975 by critic David Fricke states the show took place on February 3rd, but this appears to be an error by Fricke given detailed interview comments by Sciaky and the recollections of other attendees. Press reports suggest that Springsteen raised over $1,000 for the Main Point.

The complete show was broadcast and the above-noted 18 song setlist represents the entire concert. Not only is it one of the longest (160 minutes) single-show gigs up to this point but it’s one of the most compelling performances of Springsteen’s entire career. There are spellbinding renditions of “Incidentâ€, “New York City Serenade†and “For You†(in the solo piano arrangement), the earliest known performances of “Mountain Of Love†and “Thunder Road†(with work-in-progress “Wings For Wheels†title/lyrics) plus a wild, majestic version of Chuck Berry’s “Back In The U.S.A.â€.

Contrary to myth the police siren heard at the conclusion of “Incident On 57th Street†is an audio prop that had been utilized at a few of Bruce’s shows just prior to this one, i.e. it was not a real vehicle.
