Wynton Marsalis, Scofield return in October

Jazz musicians last visited in 2003

John Scofield's groove-oriented electric guitar and Wynton Marsalis's

reverentially traditional trumpet are at opposite ends of the jazz

spectrum, but both men are modern musical giants -- and they're both

coming to Ottawa in October.

The Ottawa International Jazz Festival's program of fall concerts is set

to be released in the next few days, according to executive producer

Catherine O'Grady. Already confirmed are Scofield, Marsalis and his

sextet, Toronto bassist and bandleader Rosemary Galloway, and Portuguese

fado singer Mariza.

Scofield's rock-tinged sound and earthy improvisations have made him one

of the best-known contemporary jazz guitarists, along with recent Ottawa

visitor Pat Methany. Scofield's latest album, That's What I Say,

released in June, is a tribute to soul pioneer Ray Charles. The Ottawa

concert may draw on this material, although program details have yet to

be confirmed, O'Grady said.

The concert will be held at the 1,000-seat Lac Leamy Casino Theatre Oct.

15.

Marsalis is best known as the "neo-traditionalist" who helped breathe

new life into mainstream jazz in the 1980s, but he has broadened his

interests in recent years, composing ballet scores, recording classical

discs and taking on the artistic directorship of Jazz at Lincoln Center

in New York. He will bring his sextet to Southam Hall Oct. 23.

Both Scofield and Marsalis last visited Ottawa in 2003. Scofield played

for an enthusiastic audience on the main stage at Confederation Park

during the jazz festival, backed by a band with impressive funk

credentials.

Marsalis's 2003 appearance was significant for the February blizzard

that almost derailed it, and for the fact that his father and three of

his brothers shared the stage. The concert kicked off the first ever

Marsalis family tour, but the musicians barely made it, with saxophonist

Branford chartering a private jet from North Carolina at his own expense

to arrive 10 minutes before showtime.

While Scofield and Marsalis are the biggest names, O'Grady was also

thrilled to nab Mariza, who appeared as part of the Jazz Festival's

first Jazz Meets the World program in 2001.

"Honest to goodness, you've never seen anything more exotic in your

life," O'Grady said yesterday. "And her singing is to die for."

Mariza will perform with a Portuguese chamber group consisting of

guitar, viola, two violins, bass and light percussion at

Dominion-Chalmers United Church on Sept. 28.

Tickets for all the shows go on sale Aug. 8, with details to be

announced next week.
