mattm Posted March 4, 2006 Report Share Posted March 4, 2006 I've always used norton or nothing at all but my field of expertise is computers so I know what's going on in my machine and you can't just sneak a virus onto it.AVG is great 'cause it's free. Somewhat harder to use than the commercial ones such as Norton and McAfee but it's free and works.If you are planning on getting one and not paying (torrent or something), I would go with Symantic Anti-Virus Corporate Edition (no serial keys or anything). I don't mean to offend anyone but my recommendation, if this is for your home, go with the AVG Free Home Version. If you buy their pro version you will get updates for as long as they continue to offer this program, ready for this...with no additional costs...EVER!!! Beats the crap out of most other programs... Bit Defender is rock solid but ya gotta pay for this one, as is Symantic and McAfee. Norton is garbage these days. Runs way to many apps in the background that chokes the snot out of your com-pooper. Biggest way to save yourself from viruses is to know what you're downloading and from who. With all the peer-to-peer sharing there's absolutely no guarantee that you're going to get clean files. I've found it to find a lot of stuff that Norton's and the like miss or just simply can't get rid of properly. The live-threat protection expires after 30 days though, I think, so AVG is probably a better choice for keeping you protected rather than doing a scan and clean.Also Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search N Destroy (both free as well) for some of the spyware, browser hijacks, etc.. There are some sites out there that can put little viruses on computers although it's mostly spyware but the main viruses are almost always executed by the user on their own machine. Just really watch email attachments and things like that (scan the attachment before opening it type thing and be weary of p2p) and you shouldn't have a problem. I've never had a virus on my computer and have been using them since the age of 3 (good old commodore 64) although try as I might I do sometimes end up with spy shit. For the record I just switched to AVG because I agree about Norton and its overhead. I've always used symantec (not norton home) because I work for giant places that use it so I figure it must work or they wouldn't spend their money on it. I have to say, though, that I've been sick of the amount of programs (that I can't end the process of!) norton seems to need to run. Mostly just be careful of the sites visited/shit downloaded. I work for ITS while at school and people constantly come to us with spyware or little viruses and after a bit of prodding it almost always comes down to porn or p2p (when someone complains of something like that we tell them to stop surfing the porn sites as a joke but very often get people saying something like "really, that's what's causing it" or turning so red you know that's what's up). Now, for another question (I'm such a techno-yokel): having successfully installed AVG, we're now having problems getting our sympatico mail - it's claiming there's some conflict between pop3 and pop8 (I think that's it; I'm at work right now and going by memory).
