Phil Collins-era Genesis to reunite

Ollie ... well, the rumours have finally come to fruition. I truly wasn't expecting Gabriel to join in, but I think it would have made a world of difference to have included Steve Hackett. I'm just worried that all we'll get is a 10minute "medley" of the good stuff.

I'll probably cave in and go anyway. In the meantime, we've got The Musical Box and the Slippermen to get us by :)

I hope they don't do that to the hardcore audience that has kept them alive during their dormancy. I also hope that Collins recent foray with The Musical Box has him all jazzed about playing some of the old stuff again.

Might be fun to put together a potential setlist. ;)

Acutally, this bit from Tony Banks gives me hope:

"Genesis has another side to it, a more complex area of music," he said. "One side gets slightly more attention than the other. We are trying to reacquaint people. Genesis is not particularly a group mentioned very much these days and we want to remind people we did do a lot of things."

Bah...their wallets are running thin - obviously this isn't a "reunion"...the band just ended a hiatus. It will be the same as when they played in the 90's. I don't understand it as being anything really cool - but thats just me because i hate post '76 genesis.

It would be cool if it was the full original line-up. I still don't think they could top the Musical box!

8 more days....its becoming unbarable!

Enjoy it for what it is. Believe me, I am by far a bigger fan of the Gabriel era but I'm not going to throw out the baby with the bath water.

You wouldn't be interested in hearing their take on songs like this? (Just guessing which oldies they might play.)

Squonk

Dance on a Volcano

Los Endos

One For The Vine

I Know What I Like

The Musical Box

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

Cinema Show

Carpet Crawlers

Firth Of Fifth

Cinema Show

Supper's Ready (Apocalypse 9/8 > ending section maybe)

P.S. And as much as I love what TMB have done for hardcore fans, I'd still rather see these 3 Genesis members playing the music they wrote.

Here's some more information, from a post on the TMB mailing list:

So Phil mentioned The Musical Box as having seen them and realizing

how tough it was to play the Lamb.

The original plan was to do the Lamb with Peter and Steve. When Peter

would not commit, they decided to go out as a 3 piece. THe New York

rehearsals were supposed to be for that.

Daryl and Chester are back.

They said songs back to 1973 (I assume that's I Know What I Like), and

there is no new material.

This is the crazy part - i was introduced to genesis thru the Musical box. I mean - i knew about Invisible touch and the 80's pop stuff (shit) but i was never a fan. When i saw the musical box i fell in love with the gabriel material.

So naturally, what I like is the more structured studio stuff, as opposed to Slippermen who play to the "live atmosphere bar crowd"...thats how I think genesis will be when they play again...they will do medly's and uptempo phil singing "I know what i like" and tossing his tamborine and doing his stupid dances. The only post gabriel album i can stand is Trick of the Tail, and even in that i'm not much interested in anything but Volcano and Los Endos (btw, that was the only part I really enjoyed at the slipperman show). So you see, i've been "raised" over the past few years on these acurate note-for-note transcriptions of 'selling england'. The whole stage show...rock opera thing that they dropped when gabriel left was their demise in my eyes. They are a different band, nothing like they were in the 70's even if they tried to do the material. I know The musical box is fake, i know they didn't write the music...but the whole show - its like a broadway play. the actors are fake, the director is interpreting someone elses story...but its still credible and awesome.

I'd hardly be interested in hearing the 2006 genesislineup play 2 average songs from the lamb, a bunch of tunes from '76/77...and some selling england medly with an incomplete suppers ready, lol

Since I really don't appreciate what these guys have done for the past 30 yeras I can't say i'm excited for some huge show at the ACC or Skydome where tickets are absurdly priced and the cheapest nosebleed seats are $80

However, I will gladly pay $50 or $70 to have a great seat for a tribute/recreation/cover band which is practically genesis. I always argued that TMB IS genesis save for the musician's faces and a lefty bassist.

WoW, what an oppinion i've got!

Ok, that's cool man. I just don't want you missing out on a piece of Genesis history, you seem like such a fan.

Have you seen the Genesis '76 video? It might give you some appreciation for what Phil did for the band after Gabriel left.

And, ahem, "average" songs on The Lamb. ;)

The truth is this line-up represents the most successful era of Genesis - the 1980's/early-1990's. Those 40 > 80,000-seat stadiums they booked across Europe are gonna be filled with people who are gonna love hearing "I Can't Dance" and "Invisible Touch".

Not having Gabriel and Hackett on board changes the tone of the enterprise considerably, and probably more profitably.

Thanks ollie, hopefully i'll get to meet you at the upcoming tmb shows. I just got my tix for hamilton, i took a peak at the box office compuer and there are LOTS of seats left. I feel this show is going to be empty :(

I have half of the '76 video and I wouldn't mind getting my hands on the rest of it. Its ok from what I remember.

...and the lamb...ok ok ok, they are not average songs. I never understood the lamb...only after my second viewing of the show last year did I fully come to appreciate it. Actually, i get LOST after the waiting room. In all sense of the word...I still can't get past that point. What I should have said, is I wouldn't like the idea of choosing 2 songs as a "best of". Especially during the slipperman show, i really enjoyed the little medley but oh how I wanted them to go on and play more!

i'll stop being a party pooper, this reunion is going to be good. I will definatly concider going once i know more details.

But as for now, i'm too swept up in this musical box business. I'm counting the hours

"I think we are all loaded enough not to worry about where the next million or two is coming from," the 55-year-old singer (Phil Collins) said Tuesday.

but, of course the tix will be Elton-priced. "HEY Cash Cow! Come here! I want to grab you!!"

i dont think Sir Phil can relate to the common folk anymore. Im saving my pennies for Cher in Vegas. She's real.

Sounds like you have many years of exploring and appreciating the music of Geneis ahead you. I didn't much care for sides 3 & 4 of The Lamb back when I first seriously listened to it in high school. Wasn't until many years later and after seeing TMB perform the whole shebang before I delved into the second half and fell in love with songs like Anyway, The Lamia, Colony of Slippermen, RIDING THE SCREE, In The Rapids and it.

Which is why I think you might be making a mistake in poo-pooing the reunion talk so soon. I know I've gone through anti-Phil stages where I too would have blown off a "half-assed" reunion but I know I would have regretted it later. I still regret not seeing them at the CNE in '86 because I was too cool for Phil.

Anyway, we won't be seeing this tour over here for about a year. Plenty of time to deprogram you. ;)
