captainsunshine
I just got this from a Railroad Earth newsletter... Just thought I'd share!Though this has nothing to do with the band, we are all pet owners and animal lovers, so please read below if you use Iams or Eukanuba products!P&G Pet Care Announces Voluntary Participation in Menu Foods’ Nationwide U.S. and Canadian Recall of Specific Canned and Small Foil Pouch ‘Wet’ Cat and Dog FoodsDayton, OH (March 16, 2007) – In response to the recent Menu Foods, Inc. nationwide recall of wet pet foods, P&G Pet Care has announced a voluntary recall in the United States and Canada on specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch “wet†cat and dog food products manufactured by Menu Foods Inc. Emporia, Kansas plant with the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197. This voluntary recall is part of a larger product recall by Menu Foods Inc., a contract manufacturer that makes a small portion of canned and foil pouch ‘wet’ cat foods for Iams and Eukanuba as well as other non-P&G brands. There have been a small number of reported cases of cats from the US (none in Canada) becoming sick and developing signs of kidney failure. The signs of kidney failure include loss of appetite, vomiting, and lethargy. P&G Pet Care has received no case reports involving dogs. This voluntary product recall involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from consumers. Consumers should stop using the affected products immediately, and consult with a veterinarian if any symptoms are present in their pet. All Iams and Eukanuba products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled products. For more information, consumers can contact the company at 1-800-882-1591 or visit www.Iams.com and www.Eukanuba.com for details. Review the list of involved products here.To read can product codes, refer to the bottom of the can. The first four numbers of the second line of numbers are the date code, and the following four numbers indicate the plant code. For example, if the second line begins with four numbers from 6339 to 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, then the can should be recalled. For foil pouches, the code numbers are located at the lower left hand corner on the back of the pouch. The date and plant codes appear in the third group of numbers, beginning an 11-digit sequence. See www.Iams.com and www.Eukanuba.com for illustrated details. Review the list of involved products here.P&G Pet Care is taking this proactive step out of an abundance of caution, because the health and well-being of pets is paramount in the mission of Iams and Eukanuba. Tests of some affected product have not revealed the cause of sickness, and testing will continue until a better understanding of the facts has been achieved. All other canned and small foil wet pouch products produced at other plants are not affected by this issue. Iams and Eukanuba “dry†products are not manufactured at Menu Foods and not affected by this issue. Iams and Eukanuba biscuits, treats and sauces are not affected by this issue. P&G Pet Care has informed the Food and Drug Administration and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on this issue. The company regrets any inconvenience to its consumers and retail customers.Iams Cat Select Bites Pouches 84942710 3 oz Iams Kitten with Chicken in Gravy 84942711 3 oz Iams Cat Adult with Beef in Gravy 84942712 3 oz Iams Cat Adult with Chicken and Wild Rice in Gravy 84942713 3 oz Iams Cat Adult with Chicken in Gravy 84942714 3 oz Iams Cat Adult with Turkey in Gravy 84942715 3 oz Iams Cat Adult with Salmon in Sauce 84942717 3 oz Iams Cat Adult with Tuna in Sauce 84942720 3 oz Iams Cat Weight Control with Tuna in Sauce 84942721 3 oz Iams Cat Active Maturity with Chicken in Gravy 84942722 3 oz Iams Cat Variety Pack with Beef, Chicken, and Turkey 84942724 3 oz Iams Cat Variety Pack with Salmon and Tuna 84942726 3 oz Iams Cat Variety Pack with Chicken and Turkey Iams Dog Select Bites Pouches 84942691 5.3 oz Iams Puppy with Chicken in Gravy 84942693 5.3 oz Iams Dog Adult with Beef in Gravy 84942694 5.3 oz Iams Dog Adult with Beef, Potatoes and Carrots in Gravy 84942695 5.3 oz Iams Dog Adult with Chicken in Gravy 84942696 5.3 oz Iams Dog Adult with Turkey in Gravy 84942697 5.3 oz Iams Dog Adult with Lamb and Wild Rice in Gravy 84942698 5.3 oz Iams Dog Weight Control with Chicken in Gravy 84942700 5.3 oz Iams Dog Active Maturity with Beef in Gravy 84942707 5.3 oz Iams Dog Variety Pack with Beef, Chicken, Lamb & Rice 84942709 5.3 oz Iams Dog Variety Pack with Beef and Chicken Eukanuba Cat Morsels in Gravy Pouches 84956839 3 oz Eukanuba Kitten with Savory Chicken 84956840 3 oz Eukanuba Cat Adult with Savory Chicken 84956841 3 oz Eukanuba Cat Adult with Savory Turkey 84956842 3 oz Eukanuba Cat Adult with Select Tuna 84956843 3 oz Eukanuba Cat Adult with Select White Fish 84956856 3 oz Eukanuba Cat Mature with Savory Chicken 84961121 3 oz Eukanuba Cat Adult with Shrimp and Cod Eukanuba Dog Bites in Gravy Pouches 84956817 5.3 oz Eukanuba Puppy with Savory Chicken 84956818 5.3 oz Eukanuba Puppy with Hearty Beef 84956819 5.3 oz Eukanuba Dog Adult with Savory Chicken 84956820 5.3 oz Eukanuba Dog Adult with Hearty Beef 84956821 5.3 oz Eukanuba Dog Adult with Lamb and Rice 84956822 5.3 oz Eukanuba Dog Adult with Beef, Pasta and Vegetables 84956823 5.3 oz Eukanuba Dog Reduced Fat with Savory Chicken 84956824 5.3 oz Eukanuba Dog Senior with Savory Chicken Eukanuba 3 oz Cans 84956844 3 oz Eukanuba Kitten Cuts with Savory Chicken in Gravy 84956846 3 oz Eukanuba Cat Adult Cuts with Chicken & Liver in Gravy 84956847 3 oz Eukanuba Cat Adult Flaked with Select Tuna in Sauce 84956848 3 oz Eukanuba Cat Adult Flaked with Select Seafood in Sauce 84956850 3 oz Eukanuba Cat Mature Cuts with Savory Chicken in Gravy Eukanuba 5.5 oz Chunks in Gravy Cans 84956830 5.5 oz Eukanuba Puppy with Savory Chicken 84956832 5.5 oz Eukanuba Dog Adult with Savory Chicken 84956833 5.5 oz Eukanuba Dog Adult with Hearty Beef 84956834 5.5 oz Eukanuba Dog Adult with Hearty Stew with Beef 84956838 5.5 oz Eukanuba Dog Senior with Hearty Beef Iams 3 oz Cans 84959908 3 oz Iams Cat Slices with Turkey in Gravy 84959909 3 oz Iams Cat Slices with Beef in Gravy 84959910 3 oz Iams Cat Slices with Chicken in Gravy 84959912 3 oz Iams Kitten Slices with Turkey in Gravy 84959913 3 oz Iams Cat Flakes with Tuna & Ocean White Fish in Sauce 84959914 3 oz Iams Cat Flakes with Salmon in Sauce 84961218 3 oz Iams Cat Variety Pack Slices with Chicken and Beef in Gravy 84961229 3 oz Iams Cat Variety Pack Flakes with Tuna & Ocean White Fish and Salmon in Sauce Iams 6 oz Cans 84959903 6 oz Iams Cat Slices with Turkey in Gravy 84959904 6 oz Iams Cat Slices with Beef in Gravy 84959905 6 oz Iams Cat Slices with Chicken in Gravy 84959915 6 oz Iams Cat Flakes with Tuna & Ocean White Fish in Sauce 84959916 6 oz Iams Cat Flakes with Salmon in Sauce 84959936 6 oz Iams Puppy Small Bites with Beef & Chicken in Gravy 84959940 6 oz Iams Dog Small Bites for Small Dogs with Chicken in Gravy 84959941 6 oz Iams Dog Small Bites for Small Dogs with Beef & Vegetables in Gravy 84969819 6 oz Iams Dog Variety Pack Small Bites for Small Dogs with Beef & Vegetables and Chicken in Gravy Iams 13.2 oz Dog Cans 84959930 13.2 oz Iams Dog Chunks with Beef and Vegetables in Gravy 84959931 13.2 oz Iams Dog Chunks with Chicken in Gravy 84959932 13.2 oz Iams Dog Active Maturity Chunks with Beef in Gravy 84959933 13.2 oz Iams Dog Weight Control Chunks with Beef in Gravy 84959934 13.2 oz Iams Puppy Chunks with Beef & Chicken in Gravy 84961233 13.2 oz Iams Dog Variety Pack Chunks with Beef & Vegetables and Chicken in Gravy 84961235 13.2 oz Iams Dog Multipack Chunks with Beef & Vegetables in Gravy 84961237 13.2 oz Iams Puppy Multipack with Beef & Chicken in Gravy 84966751 13.2 oz Iams Dog Multipack Chunks with Chicken in Gravy SOURCE:http://us.iams.com/iams/en_US/jsp/IAMS_Page.jsp?pageID=PCA&articleID=300003

phishtaper
seems like a lot of cats and dogs in canada are dieing from this, and people are racking up $1000 vet bills. here's another globe article from today. my heart goes out to these folks. the hardest part was wading thru all the confusing info to figure out what was being recalled and whether we had it. the companies should have clearly indicated at the outset that this primarily affected wet foods, not dry food. our stuff was ok, but man, Iams? Eukanuba? these are high priced premium foods. and President's Choice? that's gotta be one of the biggest sellers, I'd guess. and all these 42 brands of cat food and 51 brands of dog food come from one manufacturer? a colleague is a veterinary epidemiologist and she's just shaking her head over how badly this has been handled. it was a disaster in the waiting, and apparently a lot of human food is processed en masse like this too - yikes! phishtaper
ok, sorry to harp on this, but it just went from tragic to criminal ... Tests of suspect pet food killed 7, FDA says Menu Foods of Streetsville, Ontario intentionally killed 7 animals to test the safety of their food, after concerns were raised.Menu Foods told the FDA it received the first complaints of kidney failure and deaths among cats and dogs from pet owners on Feb. 20. It began new tests on Feb. 27.During those tests, the company fed its product to 40 to 50 dogs and cats and seven animals — the mix of species was not immediately known — died, Sundlof said. The contamination appeared more deadly to cats than to dogs, he said. This disgusts me!
ollie
I wonder if they intentionally killed animals to make the food?
phishtaper
the recall has expanded.it now includes the very common Jerky Treats for dogs and other DelMonte products as well as Hill's Prescription m/d - the first dry food recalled - the food that our diabetic cat eats. our vet called us and told us to stop feeding it to him immediately. this is troubling. nibbler
Pure profit motivation. Over-centralized food production, resulting potential for widespread cross contamination, the lack of public oversight, the corruption of officials, and the general lack of safety controls. Can anyone truly say they are suprised? Good thing OUR food supply isn't run by and overseen by the same people that... oh... wait a minute...Better save your seeds! Douglas
I was feeding Sammy Hill's Science Diet for his entire life...switched to presciption Hill's (w/d formula) and soon thereafter he died. His liver failed (not kidneys) and it was months ago now, but is there some way that I can check this out? I still have the bag of food (don't ask). headymamamyrna
I am now beginning to question why Mico died too 4 years ago.Maybe it was his food because he was healthy one day and then he couldn't walk or climb stairs. At the time he was on a healthy diet like Nutro something but I can't remember now.I will go back to the pet store where i bought this food for years. secondtube
there isn't any "dry dog food" effected by this is there? (i haven't heard of any, but that doesn't mean there hasn't been any effected).
phishtaper
to the best of my knowledge, the Hill's Prescription m/d feline food is the ONLY dry food affected, secondtube. no dry dog food has been recalled (unless you consider Jerky Treats to be "dry", and "food", lol).that said, however, the tainted ingredient is suspected to be wheat gluten (and this is why Hill's took the precautionary step of recalling the m/d, as did DelMonte their Jerky Treats). the FDA has found melamine in the source wheat gluten. so, check your stuff for wheat gluten and perhaps stop feeding that food for a while until the dust settles. the most troubling aspect is that Hill's only uses higher quality source ingredients suitable for human consumption, so some of the tainted gluten could have gotten into human food as well.
