Dear Steve Earle,

Your new songs are good, but why you have a DJ accompany you in the arrangement is beyond me. You are neither young nor hip nor electronic nor hip-hop etc, so why go there? – it weakens your music.

Also – sing INTO the microphone, not beside it. Microphones allow your voice to be amplified. Singing into the air beside the microphone does nothing. When your lyrics are integral to the song, make sure people can hear them clearly!

Did I mention the DJ idea came across as really stupid?

Would it have killed you to play some songs that I wanted to hear?

Probably because his new album

matches his battle-scarred guitar-rock with computerized drum loops and an onstage DJ

Brad, I know why the DJ was there, because of the new album. But why Steve Earle felt to the need to even have a DJ on his album is what I'm questioning (and is why I used the word arrangement).

I thought he would tone down the DJ bit live but I was wrong. Thankfully the DJ was only on stage when he was playing new tunes, except for Transcendental Blues and CCKMP and maybe one other - the DJ was there for those too.

It was about half and half, new and old. Maybe 60% old, 40% new actually.

Oh yeah – the DJ couldn’t keep time when he was hitting the drum pads, and he totally fucked up the ending to Way Down In the Hole, unless it was meant to be totally out of sync and discordant.

The songs that were played solo, just him and a guitar, were great (when he sang into the mic). The DJ thing really put a bad taste in my mouth. If I had to assign a rating, I'd say 6.5 out of 10, and that's just because his songs are so good.
