Kanada Kev
Cheech and Chong still rollingBy SHANE ROSS - Sun MediaOTTAWA - My suspicions were confirmed when Shelby Chong, Tommy Chong's hotter-than-he-should-be-able-to-get wife, opened last night's show at the National Arts Centre by asking the crowd if they got stoned at home or in the car on the way to the show.Cheers erupted with screams of "both," and the tone was officially set for Cheech and Chong's first live show in 25 years. And when Cheech Marin, now 62, came out in a red beanie, red suspenders and a yellow muscle shirt, the crowd gave him a standing ovation before he even said a word. Improvising a famous scene from Up in Smoke, the 1978 movie that made them famous, Cheech pretended to be driving a beater car and when Chong, a spritely 70, walked on the stage a few minutes later, playing a hitchhiker wearing a bra to make it easier to get picked up, the crowd rose to its feet again.Cheech and Chong were right: Pot really is a love drug. The auditorium looked like a hippie convention. If there were priests, nuns or narcs in the audience, they were well disguised among the long-haired men with bandanas and tie-dyed shirts and women with tattoos of marijuana leaves. I could've sworn I saw Jerry Garcia near the front row.But these are Cheech and Chong's peeps. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. But just last week the editors at the Sun sent out a reminder of the company's drug and alcohol policy -- coincidence? -- so I sat through the show like that priest in disguise. And the priest wouldn't have liked the part when Chong said God rested on the seventh day because he was too baked from smoking pot on day six.He might have cringed when Cheech asked Chong why the joint they were pretending to smoke was so slippery, and Chong said it was KY Jelly that he needed to smuggle it out of prison. "At least the paper doesn't stick to my lips," Cheech said with a shrug. He surely would've tsk-tsked at the skit where they pretended to be an elderly couple attending their first porno movie.Or what about when Chong sang a blues tune about a "freaky lady" he took home one night, and when they got to the bedroom, she took off her leg and put it on the dresser, then popped out her glass eye, pulled off her wig and removed her breasts and put them all on the dresser."I didn't know if I should get on the bed or on the dresser," he said.Even the priest might have laughed at that one. Freak By Night
I got so baked before the show last night that I lost my keys.Had a great time, lots of laughs. A few glitches in their performance, some technical miscues, but these can be forgiven. It was the first show in the tour after all and they are pretty old! Big Wooly Mammoth
could have done with less of Shelby. I thought that her act was a bit too long. Cheech and Chong were great though. When I got home my wife was discussing the Jewish history class she's teaching on Sunday morning. I couldn't stop thinking of "This bud's for Jews!" and the burning bush. gotta run....
