Here's our facebook event page for it. Part of the proceeds from the door will go to Mines Action Canada, and we'll also be doing a 50/50 and selling raffle tickets at the show. I am just finishing off a 6-month internship with Mines Action Canada that saw me working with landmine survivors in Northern Uganda. I firmly believe in this cause and am happy to be involved with these events! The work of Canadians and concerned civil society groups as well as supportive governments around the world has resulted in the Ottawa Treaty banning landmines and the newly created Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM). Together, these international treaties outline state obligations on these indiscriminate weapons, and affirm the global community’s commitment to end the suffering they create. From words to concrete action, the fulfillment of these goals is becoming a reality. To celebrate and commemorate the achievements made both by Canada and the global community in achieving these comprehensive bans, Mines Action Canada will launch the thenth annual Canadian Landmine Action Week (CLAW) from February 23rd - March 1st, 2009. Despite our success in clearing the path of victim-activated weapons many barriers persist. Landmines and cluster munitions continue to menace communities and their presence makes simple everyday tasks like pursuing a livelihood or going to school extremely dangerous. Both of these explosive remnants of war pose significant, dangerous risks to civilian communities with predictable, preventable consequences. The remaining legal, political, and financial barriers that inhibit the full realization of a world free of victim activated weapons are complicit in creating this situation. Enough is enough! Canadian Landmine Action Week is the opportunity to reinforce Canadian commitment to the human security of people everywhere through events educating our communities, mobilizing people to let their MPs know that this issue is important to us, and raising funds for mine action. Neo Soul.Doesn't seem like a year goes by without some hack coughing up a, ahem, new (or is it nu?) musical category.Those of us who believe in the existence of only two categories -- bad music and good music -- find this habit that some of our contemporaries have of throwing up cute names for what they believe are new genres to be laughable.Which brings us nicely to the second annual NuFunk Festival that kicks off tomorrow at Revival on College St.Is the event just a straight up funk extravaganza or does it have an agenda?"I don't think we're ambitious enough to try to redefine a genre, but we're always trying to broaden people's minds about how music evolves by different styles coming together," says Jay Cleary, the festival's artistic director. "NuFunk -- as an organization -- puts on events that showcase a variety of influences, with artists who have relationships with other arenas where their profiles aren't as high."For example, Jason Wilson, who's leading a tribute to (late legendary keyboard king) Jackie Mittoo next Thursday, just recorded with saxman Pee Wee Ellis who was James Brown's arranger and who's been called the man who invented funk," Cleary adds."(DJ) Adham Shaikh definitely has a funky feel to his global rhythms, as does a lot of Eccodek's live global fusion grooves," he says. "For an all-Canadian double bill, you can't get much funkier than God Made Me Funky and the Souljazz Orchestra, and Brownman's been known to burn it up with funk bands. I think the festival's got plenty for the funk purists out there."As exciting as the lineup of this year's fest is the fact that funds raised at tomorrow's launch will benefit Mines Action Canada. On its website, MAC describes itself as "an international leader working to eliminate the serious humanitarian, environmental and development consequences of landmines and other explosive remnants of war."Cleary says MAC's Kevin O'Neill contacted him about the possibility of organizing a fundraiser to coincide with the annual Canadian Landmine Action Week, which began earlier this week and concludes March 1. For the last 10 years, CLAW has worked hard to raise awareness about the ongoing tragedy of landmines claiming thousands of innocent lives and maiming countless more people every year."We were honoured to be asked to have tomorrow's show be included in Canadian Landmine Action Week, and the musicians were as well," Cleary says. "Weapons that kill so many innocent people who have no role in a particular conflict need to be eliminated, and we hope we're able to help spread that message to our community."I admire the fact that MAC is keeping political pressure on international governments to fulfill the landmine ban treaty which was signed 10 years ago," Cleary says. "Canada has long been an advocate for the ban of landmines and there is still much work to be done.
