Rossolee
My wife and I had a great meal at a Kimock NYE meet and greet dinner done by Charlie Ayers a few years ago. We're looking forward to checking out his restaurant/market Calafia the next time we're out west. His cookbook Food 2.0 is great.http://calafiapaloalto.com/http://www.chefcharlieayers.com/ ps- if anyone goes ask him if he still has the "Kimock for President" shirt we gave him. AD
You might be interested in knowing this:The celebrity guest chef this year is Charlie Ayers, owner of Calafia restaurant in Palo Alto, California, widely known as former executive chef for Google Inc. and the Grateful DeadFrom: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/health/Drink+happy/2185938/story.htmlNOV 10 09 - 8:15 AM -- Once again it appears on-guard-for-thee Canadian immigration agents were especially vigilant when it came to admitting celebrity California chef Charlie Ayers, of Calafia Restaurant in Palo Alto, into Ottawa last Wednesday to attend the weekend Ottawa Wine & Food Show.Charlie was set to appear as the star chef, cooking up a storm at the Café California booth where California wines would be paired with his creations including Grilled Salmon and Fig Sate Brushed with Orange Fire Glaze, Lamb en Croute and Cured Pork Belly Onion Marmalade with Potato Disc.So far, so good. But as he got off the direct flight from San Francisco, it appears one Canadian immigration agent took special interest in what Charlie was here for, and wanted to know if he'd be doing work that ought to be performed by a Canadian.Recall that last year, celebrity California chef Tai Olesky, who was also to be a big attraction at the 2008 show, was actually sent home by immigration in Ottawa after he said he's in town to attend the show. (Fact is, show organizers in Ottawa weren't paying either Tai Olesky or Charlie Ayers a cent. Both were here to promote California products.) As it turned out, chef Tai had to be replaced at the last minute by Constantinos Laliotitis, also from Calilfornia, who apparently passed scrutiny. As Charlie tells me the story:"They asked me why I'm here, and I said I'm a guest of the United States ambassador, I'm attending dinner at his home, and I'd be going to the wine and food show as well."Gee, is that an alarm bell we hear?"The immigration agent said, 'why is that?' He started asking me questions about the show, where it is and how long it will be. So I told him I'm here to do charity work to help promote California wines at the trade show. And I handed him my letter from the ambassador's office stating that I'm a guest attending dinner at ambassador David Jacobson's home, and I'm a renowned chef."The agent asked, 'renowned chef? I've never heard of you.' I told him to check my name on Google. I gave him my business card, so then he asked why I'd bring a business card if I'm not working? So his last questions was, 'where is Palo Alto?' "Good that he eventually passed scrutiny by those who would keep us safe from visiting culinarians.
