Hal Johnson
Technically speaking, is there a rule against diving in soccer? If there is, how often is it called?very rarely, all the time, or kind of?
Davey Boy 2.0
It's called simulation, called more often in England than say BrazilNot a lot of calls but if it is called the diver gets a yellow card
Hal Johnson
Sweet, thanks man. So in, say, the EPL, would you say it gets called a lot less than it does in the NHL?
Davey Boy 2.0
Tough question, I wouldn't say that it gets called a lot less, I would guess that there are maybe 1-2 on average such calls per weekend in the EPL
Davey Boy 2.0
...and I can't remember the last time that I saw one in the NHL.And maybe that average is more like 0.8 calls per w.e. in the EPL– as I said, tough to sayedit to add: there are a lot less since Crynaldo left for Spain :content: Edited April 8, 2010 by Guest
Booche
There is nothing worse than soccer pussies diving Hal. For these eyes, it's rampant in the game. There's one ever 9.2 minutes.
Hal Johnson
Cool, thanks again. Im writing a paper on the ethics of sport and was about to say that there's a rule against it in the NHL, but not one in the EPL. Good thing I asked! Now to find a way to reference Davey Boy 2.0

Hal Johnson
Booche, that was my next question, is it safe to say that the ratio of dives to calls is much greater in soccer than in hockey?
Booche
Fuuuuuuuuuck ya. Its far easier to get away with a dive in the NHL though once you take into account of the sticks, boards and speed. But there are uncalled dives in soccer that have prevented me from enjoying the game as much as I used to, which ties into the theme of your paper. The blatancy is a slap in the face to the fans of the game.
Jaimoe
Also, often when a player dives in the NHL, two penalties are called: one for diving and another for hooking or tripping.
Booche
Dont even start with me how much I absolutely HATE that double-call Jaimoe. Its hypocritical of the league to force that shit. How can you get a tripping (defender) and a diving (attacker) penalty on the same play? It's notfucking possible!
Davey Boy 2.0
the refs should get 2 minutes for breaking the laws of physics!

If they call a dive it should instantly negate the "phantom" infraction that caused the dive. They should also call it "diving" and the refs could use a great Diving hand signal when announcing it. Fuck the unsportsmanlike conduct ... call it a DIVE! Then make them wear a Speedo on their next shift.

Hal Johnson
Once again, thanks guys. I completely forgot that BOTH players can get penalized in hockey at the same time - that is completely insane and will make my prof's head explode when he reads it. Booche
As long as the NHL doesnt allow soccer-inspired celebrations, then the game should survive.

dave-O
Both players don't always get penalties in the NHL. But when they both do, the explanation is it was a deserving penalty plus there was embellishment by the other player.
Booche
They can explain it all they want but when shit stinks you cant tell me it dont. I've seen it called enough times to agree with the 'dive' portion and wonder why the tripping or hooking call was made as well. Itsfuckingbullshit. Kanada Kev
Sometimes it stinks, sometimes it's legit. It's quitefucking possible! Disagree. If somebody is rightfully tripped/hooked/etc so be it. However, if they feel that infraction and feel it is necessary to embellish/dive that completely NEGATES the primary infraction. That is such an unsportsmanlike and uncompetitive fucking move. No way in hell it should happen in a sport of toughness/grit/pugilism to have a bunch of fakers. It irks me when players who are tripped/hooked/etc instantly look to the ref and throw their hands in the air and start whining WHILE THE PLAY IS STILL LIVE! Keep going until you hear a whistle no matter what. Speaking of "faking it" if a play is whistled dead due to an "injury" to a player (not from a regular stoppage) and they have to get the trainer on the ice and all, then that injured player should NOT be allowed to be on the ice when the play starts again. [color:purple]Maybe they should allow the coincidental minors when it includes a diving call. However, the result of that diving call means that the instigator rule/penalty gets thrown out for the rest of the game :) Edited April 8, 2010 by Guest
