Booche
Is Kovalchuk's deal really for 17 years?
Booche
Kovalchuk has signed a 17-year deal which could top $150 million, a source told ESPN.com's Scott Burnside.Interesting, this gives me hope that the age of overpaying players is over. dave-O
That's funny POG, I emailed Booche earlier "in 17 years, Chris Chelios will be 65."

Booche
17-year, $102 million Hahhahaa. What a joke. Next up? Habs to sign Carey Price, 200 years for 500 million dollars.

Schwa.
wow. that is a crazy contract but it looks like it's really only for about 11 years with some retirement money thrown in at the end of it.
rubberdinghy
Explain to me why 6.0 this year and next, then 11.5 5 years in a row?
Kanada Kev
What a joke. Way to set the bar for future contracts. I will feel absolutely NO sympathy for franchises that bankrupt themselves on these deals. I hope there's no bail-outs for them ... especially if they start fleecing their fans due to these contracts.
ollie
That's a lot of money to pay a guy that really wanted to play in LA.
Booche
Way to set the bar for future contracts.Rick Dipietro called...............Anyways Dinghy, I am blindly guessing the first 2 years are cap-related. Maybe the Devil's are assuming guys like Marty will only last another couple of seasons and then that salary comes off the books?
dave-O
Anyways Dinghy, I am blindly guessing the first 2 years are cap-related.How could they be cap-related, when the cap number doesn't change from year-to-year? I'm going to blindly guess that it's actual payroll related, actual dollars out the door. Again, probably related to Brodeur, Rolston, etc coming off the books in 2 years. Booche
How could they be cap-related, when the cap number doesn't change from year-to-year?When Brodeur retires, 5.2 million comes off the cap. Look at the jump in salary. 6 million to 11.5 million, which should be around the time Brodeur retires.
dave-O
Again, looks like real dollars not cap dollars to me. Kovalchuk's cap number doesn't change when Brodeur's contract ends.
Guest Low Roller
In a world where Scott Gomez is getting paid $8M and Yashin is the highest paid player on the Islanders this season thanks to the terms of his buyout, real dollars are pretty much meaningless. It's all about the cap, and I agree with Booche (again!) that it's about making cap until Brodeur calls it quits.
Booche
Kovalchuk's cap number doesn't change when Brodeur's contract ends. I didnt think this through and ended up failing. Spectacularly. Your bang on. Definitely actual payroll dollars.

Guest Low Roller
Total cash payout plus potential bonuses averaged out over the length of the contract.
rubberdinghy
In other words...his cap hit will be around 6 mill a year over 17 years?
