Guest Low Roller Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 It just happens that today is the 50th anniversary of the discovery of DNA. Once the human genome is fully analyzed and understood, there will be the potential of eliminating all diseases and illnesses if used correctly. If used for evil, we can grow a giant army of stormtroopers, and quell insurrections in far off galaxies.
Phunky Cauldron Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 The invention of the printing press in 1436 by johannes gutenberg. This was more or less the invention of mass communication and a huge leap into the future. Three cheers for Gutenberg. Hip Hip Hooray!
arcane Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 I second the invention of the Gutenberg printing press. Other inventions of note: • The internal combustion engine • The Haber-Bosch nitrogen fixation process • Nylon • Aniline dye • Vulcanized rubber • The guitar • The light bulb • Calculus Other discoveries of note: • Subatomic particles • Microorganisms • Viruses • Vaccines (arguably inventions, beyond the first one) • Motion of the solar system
arcane Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Gunpowder (not sure if this predates 1000 AD)
Phred Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Steve Guttenburg invented the printing press? Silicon Mircrochip, is probably the most recent invention that has had a huge impact. Here are some others I haven't seen up here yet. Flight eyeglasses modern medicine
