  1. Scored a couple of tix for this yesterday. Should be a really interesting show. Glenn Gould Studio (where some here saw Hornsby) is very small and sounds wonderful. Capacity is just over 300 I believe. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ http://www.cbc.ca/toronto/community/mt/2012/02/who-cowboy-junkies-what-only.html Cowboy Junkies LIVE at Glenn Gould Studio In June of 2010 Cowboy Junkies decided that they were going to release four albums in 18 months. They called the project The Nomad Series and they used the paintings of Enrique Martinez Celaya as a starting point. The first album - Renmin Park - was inspired by a three-month trip to China that Mike took to explore where his adopted daughters were born. The second album - Demons - is a cover album of Vic Chesnutt songs. Vic worked with the band on the Trinity Revisited album in 2007 and they were supposed to work together on some original material but he died before they had the chance. The third album - Sing In My Meadow - came out this past fall. It's essentially the band blowing the doors off of the myth that they're a quiet little band. It's dirty, grungy, jammy and best played loud. The fourth and final album - Angels In The Wilderness - comes out March 27, 2012 and the concert in Glenn Gould Studio will have the band playing selections from all four of the albums. Who: Cowboy Junkies What: The only Canadian date prior to release of fourth and final album of their Nomad Series. Where:: Glenn Gould Studio, 8pm When: March 14, 2012.
  2. http://bit.ly/wmTG6Y Bruce Springsteen – Wrecking Ball Two years ago Bruce Springsteen told Rolling Stone that he had just written his first song about a “guy that wears a tie.†The songwriter had spent much of his career writing about characters struggling in tough economic times, but the financial crisis convinced him it was time to write about the people and forces that brought America to this ugly point. The result was Wrecking Ball, a scathing indictment of Wall Street greed and corruption and a look into the devastation it has wrought. “This is as direct a record as I ever made,†Springsteen tells Rolling Stone. “That’s with the possible exception of Nebraska, which this record has a lot in common with.†The stark subject matter is paired with an experimental sonic palette that Springsteen created with producer Ron Aniello. “The record basically started out as folk music – just me and a guitar singing these songs,†says Springsteen. “Then Ron brought a large library of sound that allowed me to explore – like maybe a hip-hop drum loop or country-blues stomp loop. The actual drums came later. There was no preconceived set of instruments that needed to be used, I could go anywhere, do anything, use anything. It was very wide open.†Album opener “We Take Care of Our Own†poses a question: Do Americans take care of their own? The songs that follow make the answer clear: The narrator of the slow waltz “Jack of All Trades†struggles to find work, while the anti-hero of the country-folk stomper “Easy Money†decides to imitate “all them fat cats†on Wall Street by turning to crime. The similarly uptempo “Shackled and Drawn,†meanwhile, offers a political analysis worthy of Woody Guthrie: “Gambling man rolls the dice, workingman pays the bill/ It’s still fat and easy up on banker’s hill/ Up on banker’s hill, the party’s going strong/ Down here below we’re shackled and drawn.†The album’s themes shift midway through, as economic despair gives way to a quest for spiritual redemption. It ends on a hopeful note with the ambitious “We Are Alive.†The song takes on an Irish-wake feel, as Springsteen celebrates Americans (and aspiring ones) who died fighting for progress: “I was killed in Maryland in 1877/ When the railroad workers made their stand/ I was killed in 1963 one Sunday morning in Birmingham/ I died last year crossing the Southern desert my children left behind in San Pablo… We are alive/ And though we lie alone here in the dark/ Our souls will rise/ To carry the fire and light the spark/ To fight shoulder to shoulder and heart to heart.†There are genuine musical surprises throughout. The cinematic “Rocky Ground†expands on the hip-hop-inspired vibe of “Streets of Philadelphia,†while prominently featuring the voice of gospel singer Michelle Moore, who even delivers a brief, apparently Springsteen-penned rap. “Death To My Hometown†is a Celtic-influenced foot-stomper that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Dropkick Murphys album. “We Are Alive†borrows the horn riff from Johnny Cash’s “Ring Of Fire,†while “Land Of Hope And Dreams†(originally written and played live with the E Street Band in 1999) has been re-worked with electronic drums and a gospel choir. “Hope and Dreams†also has a saxophone solo by the late Clarence Clemons. The Big Man’s sax can also be heard on “Wrecking Ball,†alongside trumpeter Curt Ramm – who will be in the five-piece horn section (which also includes Clemons’ nephew Jake) that will be hitting the road with Springsteen on his upcoming tour. - Andy Greene mp3@320 Track List 01. 4. holy fu&k that sucked. Out-played, Out-hustled, Out-positioned. Felt sorry for Reimer as the team hung him out to dry. Bring it home and re-group. Snap outta this funk.
  5. Thanks for the tips guys. I think I'll tell him I'll take it, but no cashola. If he doesn't like that, then I'll just get a thow-away until a better deal comes along. Cheers
  6. WEll, My phone up and died yesterday. I'm in need of a new one but don't want to be stuck on any sort of multi-year plan. So, I'm just looking at getting the hardware and going from there. My uncle has an iPhone3G in mint condition. Is it worth grabbing for $100 and just going with that for my phone/data? I'm not a super-heavy user and can handle something with a lower qual camera and maybe a bit slower. iPhoners advice? Cheers, Kevin
  7. She's a great performer. I heard about her via SCI's old sound guy a couple of years ago. I saw her at The Great Hall and it was good times: http://www.jambands.ca/sanctuary/showpost.php?post/646797/
  8. Yup, GA. The Great Hall is a wonderful room. Small and sounds wonderful. Small balcony to wander around too. http://www.thegreathall.ca/ Just noticed that the Barr Brothers and Deep Dark Woods are coming soon.
  9. Got 4 for SATURDAY Still will be hoping to show up on Friday too Pumped for this event.
  10. Chris Brown is a fucking asshole for sure. Can't see how anyone can condone that type of behaviour and treatment of other people. I never have listened to his music and most likely never will. Chris Brown, probably likes to beat on little kids too. Nothing like a bully to only pick fights that they know they're gonna win.
  11. Got the announcement in my email and began to GRIN!! This is gonna be sick. I may even try to get to both shows. The last time he was at the Great Hall with Blade was other-worldly. Stoked!
  12. That's where Rush played last summer (or the summer before) I think.
  13. ? what's at 9pm? I don't see anything listed. Link?
  14. http://bit.ly/zvuiJR Galactic – Carnivale Electricos Call it Mardi Gras, or call it Carnivale. Galactic captures the modern vibrancy of this annual bacchanal - and blazes a trail to its future - on Carnivale Electricos, the group’s most ambitious release to date, set for release on Mardi Gras Day, Feb 21, via Anti- Records. Over the course of thirteen tracks, Galactic explores the connections between the Mardi Gras in their native New Orleans and the mighty megacarnivals of Brazil, whisking listeners between neighborhoods and cultures on a parade of genres from blistering rock, hip hop and r&b, to samba, zydeco, jazz and of course, funk. NOLA guests on the record span several generations and styles from Neville brothers Cyril and Ivan, to rappers Mannie Fresh and Mystikal (making one of his first recordings since being released from prison); from Big Chief Juan Pardo, one of the youngest Mardi Gras Indians, to the KIPP Renaissance High School Band, one of the city’s most riotous marching bands. Brazilian influences on the album are similarly diverse including a cover of the Sergio Mendes Carnivale classic “Magalenha†and Galactic’s new composition, “Guero Bounce,†which pairs Brazilian rhythms with a New Orleans Bounce beat. “Julou,†named for the band’s own off-the-grid Mardi Gras parade, is inspired by another popular Carnivale melody, while †O Côco da Galinha†features rising Rio samba star Moyseis Marques. Galactic will tour the US extensively this winter and spring, headlining some of its largest venues to date, including a stop at NYC’s Terminal 5 on Feb 25 for a show that will feature special guests Steel Pulse. Corey Glover (Living Colour) and Corey Henry (Rebirth Brass Band) will join the group as special guest vocalists, while openers on the tour will include Orgone and the Soul Rebels. See below for complete dates. Following the breakout critical success of their previous two albums From The Corner To The Block (2007), and Ya-Ka-May (2010), Carnivale Electricos represents an unparalleled cross-section of contemporary carnival music that required Galactic to draw on all the skills, stamina, and funk they deploy at their annual all-night Lundi Gras concerts, which like the band itself have become a NOLA institution. In the nearly two decades since the band began, they’ve performed or recorded with everyone from BB King and Jeff Beck to Jurassic 5 and The Roots, playing every major US festival along the way including Coachella, Austin City Limits, Outside Lands, Bonnaroo, and of course JazzFest. mp3@320 Track List 01. 16. Seriously, that blew chunks. What kind of video montage was that for Sundin??? A bunch of pics of him celebrating goals. How about SHOWING those goals? First period was boring as shit. I mean 28 face-offs in 20 mins? Then, the Leafs completely shit the bed. When Phaneuf got owned at the blue line, and then by Eller on the same play to give up a goal I threw up in my mouth a little. Guys, the Gomez bit up there is a friggin' joke. If you had a couple of kids who watched Wizards of Waverly Pl you'd know why the name Gomez is not only associated with an over-paid under-achieving hockey player.
  17. Ha! This set is so much fun. Would have been a blast to attend. Hopefully a sbd recording will surface someday. http://bit.ly/xCq8as Umphrey’s McGee - All Night Wrong (7th Street Entry, Minneapolis, MN, February 2, 2012) Following last night’s performance at First Avenue in Minneapolis, MN, Umphrey’s McGee offered their first-ever all-cover late night set dubbed “All Night Wrong†at the nearby 7th Street Entry. While the set featured no new covers, the band did run through a number of classics which were voted on by fans. The night kicked off with a take on Rush’s “YYZ,†before diving into a dubbed out version of “Pink Floyd’s “Breathe†and Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.†Later in the set, guitarist Jake Cinninger replaced Kris Myers on drums for a take a second Zeppelin tune, “Moby Dick.†The show closed out with a pair of Talking Heads covers, “Making Flippy Floppy†and the encore “Burning Down the House.†- jambands.com mp3@320 (Audience Recording) Track List YYZ Breathe* Waiting Room Billy Jean Immigrant Song Cocaine Comfortably Numb Moby Dick^ All Night Long Making Flippy Floppy Encore: Burning Down the House Notes: All Night Wrong: late night show comprised of all covers voted on by fans * dub version ^ with Jake replacing Kris on drums http://bit.ly/xCq8as

  19. Ha. I'm just glad it wasn't lit at the time (mind you, I was a bit lit at the time and it freaked me out, then I just laughed and grooved to Phil).
  20. Here are some fun numbers to watch: http://didgomezscore.com/
