  1. Free acoustic/studio track included http://magnifier.blogspot.com/2011/10/ryan-adams.html A Heart Made of Ashes & Fire Alt-country crooner. Video game fanatic. Metalhead. Ryan Adams is a multifaceted man. Released on the heels of a two-year hiatus, Adams’ latest collection, Ashes & Fire, is full of introspective ballads that mark a more straightforward, country direction for the musically moody maven. The album, his 13th, pits soulful, heartfelt lyrics and gentle percussions against melancholic melodies. Tracks such as the wistful single “Lucky Now†are low-key and perfect for those Jacksonville city nights. But it’s both astonishing and refreshing how Adams’ musical output doesn’t always match his input. The singer grew up on punk and metal in the ‘80s, recently surfaced in a Black Sabbath t-shirt to unveil “Dirty Rain,†and raised eyebrows on BBC Radio 1 with a folk-ified cover of Iron Maiden’s “Wasted Years.†So naturally, when Magnifier caught up with Adams, we had to find out more about his metal upbringing. Watch the video above to learn how that seemingly unassuming part of his musical life helps inform his newly minted PAX-AM imprint, as well as the discipline it takes to separate his private fandom from his professional career. Adams also discusses how a classic video game and fabled mythical creature both came together to symbolize the next phase of his career as a songwriter. And if that’s not enough intrigue, add Adams’ in-studio acoustic track and Magnifier exclusive “Do I Wait†to your library for free now. -- Jen Guyre
  2. Thanks for that vid kc. O'Leary might as well be O'Reilly ... complete d-bag. That is not the way to host an interview whatsoever.
  3. http://bit.ly/riHsOB Rich Robinson - Through A Crooked Sun Rich Robinson will release Through A Crooked Sun on October 11, 2011. Through A Crooked Sun is Rich’s second solo album after much success as a co-founder of The Black Crowes. Robinson produced the album, which includes guest appearances from Warren Haynes and Larry Campbell. The album will be released by Circle Sound/Thirty Tigers. “The most exciting thing for me in doing my own album is that a lot of the things that I want to express lyrically, which are very personal, may not have space to be expressed in the band format,†says Rich. This album chronicles his path to peace and centeredness in the aftermath of personal turmoil. He uses the sun as a metaphor to examine his life because his tough experiences both nourished him and blinded him at the same time. Rich has also been part of a Howard Zinn film project called The People Speak, which he found to have a common cause with the album. - JamBase mp3@v0 Track List 1. Gone Away 2. It’s Not Easy 3. 4. Last one?? http://www.dead.net/road-trips-vol4-no5?eml=dn/101111/header Road Trips Series Ends with Boston ’76 1976 was a pivotal year for the Grateful Dead. After an 18-month hiatus that saw just four Bay Area appearances by the band, but also a phenomenal studio album, Blues for Allah, and a slew of solo projects, the Dead returned to the road at the beginning of June ’76. Mickey Hart was officially back in the fold after a long absence, and the band came back with a batch of new songs and fresh approaches to playing their old ones. It was the summer of America’s much-ballyhooed bicentennial, the country was still going through Watergate withdrawal, and we needed our Grateful Dead back! During their time away, the Dead radically simplified their stage setup. They put their remarkable (but cumbersome) Wall of Sound P.A. out to pasture, in favor of a more conventional (but still great) system. And, as a treat to their fans, they booked their entire first post-hiatus tour into acoustically solid small theaters, eschewing the large arenas that their snowballing popularity and their massive sound system had forced them into. They hit the road well-rehearsed and refreshed; clearly thrilled to be out there playing Grateful Dead music onstage again. And we were, needless to say, psyched to be seeing them again! This latest—and last—edition of our Road Trips series (more on that in a moment), ingeniously labeled No. 4. Vol. 5, was drawn from two shows early on what was dubbed by many Heads at the time as the Dead’s “comeback†tour. It contains the truly awe-inspiring complete June 9, 1976 Boston Music Hall show (just the third of the tour, but you’d never guess that), and also a handful of hot tracks from the June 12 show at the same venue. The 6/9 show has long been a personal favorite, so I’m really delighted that it is finally being released! It’s definitely one of the strongest of ’76. The first set includes stand-out versions of then-new songs such as “Crazy Fingers†and “The Music Never Stopped,†just the third version of “Cassidy,†a neatly jammed “Scarlet Begonias†and a potent “Ship of Fools,†among other gems. The second set opens with a long, circuitous “St. Stephen†(the first in five years!), then goes into a tremendous “Eyes,†followed by “Let It Grow,†which was now independent of the first two parts of “Weather Report Suite.†“Samson and Delilah†and “Lazy Lightning†> “Supplication†were brand-new to the Dead repertoire, while the bevy of rearranged songs included “High Time†and the famous disco-influenced “Dancing in the Street.†The encore was another recent one: “Franklin’s Tower†(which would never be played in that slot again). For a band that hadn’t played together in eons, the Dead sound remarkably self-assured and on-the-ball throughout. The 6/12/76 songs include one of only five versions of “Mission in the Rain†the Dead played, “The Wheel†(a few years old, but new to the stage), the revived “Comes a Time†(last played in ’72) and a “Sugar Mag†sandwich with a great “U.S. Blues†as the meaty filling. As with all the previous Road Trips releases, this final entry comes with a colorful booklet containing an essay and period photos. And needless to say it has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman. You can find the complete song list for all three discs, as well as ordering information, by clicking here. So, what’s all this talk about the end of Road Trips? Well, we figured that four years and 17 releases was a pretty good run for that series, and now it’s time to try something new. Don’t worry, there is definitely going to be another release program dedicated to putting out the best material in the vault. We’ll be revealing details of the new series very soon, so stay tuned! — Blair Jackson TRACKLIST CD 1: 1. Cold Rain and Snow 2. Cassidy 3. Scarlet Begonias 4. The Music Never Stopped 5. 6. The title of last night's episode was: FACE OFF! niiiiiiiice
  7. no kidding. This break is almost as bad as having to suffer through the "all-star" break as well. Get on with the season already! Would really suck going 0-2 and then having to wait a week. Glad they aren't in that situation
  8. Killer mind-fuck ending! Walt is one badassmuthafukkah! Next season? My guess is that Walt & Jesse set up a lab for the purpose of a finite number of cooking sessions. Raise enough so that they can 'disappear.' However, unless they get this dude on their side, he's gonna be their pain in the ass forever.
  9. THey got their gold records gotta love the black jack table too:
  10. This season has ramped up big time over the past 4 episodes. The best damn show on TV period! Big finale this Sunday. I can't wait. If you LOVE this show, you will LOVE this interview with Bryan Cranston. Very compelling and highly interesting and entertaining. http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episodes/episode_216_-_bryan_cranston Instead of making meth in Marc’s garage, Bryan Cranston has a conversation about what led him to the role of Walter White in Breaking Bad. Along the way he almost became a cop, he was briefly wanted for murder, and he went broke making a labor of love. Plus, Bryan teases Marc with some tidbits about the Breaking Bad season finale.
  11. ^^^^ so original. Was going to end my post with that knowing that it would be the first thing posted here. "The Parade Route" is always being planned and will never stop being planned. So, constantly referring to it sounds more like "the sun comes up every morning" or like BillO saying "tide goes in, tide goes out"
  12. Where have you gone PK Subban? Sure didn't look like you were in the same form as last year. Leafs will take the odd man rushes and your -2 on the night. LOVED the short-handed goal. Thanks Dreadful 1st period as was mentioned earlier. Don Cherry was a tool on the Corner last night. Reimer won the first period almost single-handedly until the Leafs woke up in the second. Good fore-checking by the Leafs and some creative stuff happening on the ice with Grabs and Kesssel. Hope Dion keeps up this style of play. That one-timer was a bullet. For the Habs it looked like Cammalleri and Price were the best things going. Bring on the Senaturds on Saturday :)
  13. Well, it didn't take long for the Freaky Phelps clan to get in on the action. Ugh ::doh:: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/06/westboro-baptist-church-steve-jobs-funeral_n_998032.html
  14. http://bit.ly/rbZNRV Peter Gabriel - New Blood Last year’s Scratch My Back saw Peter Gabriel reimagining his favourite songs by other artists – from Bowie to Bon Iver, Elbow to Paul Simon – via orchestral arrangements. No drums, no bass, no guitars. Taking that exquisite, elegiac work on tour – with the gigantic New Blood orchestra – necessitated adding some of his own material, similarly refashioned. So this time he’s covering, if you will, his own stuff – radically reshaping it into forms both grander and sparser. Like its predecessor, New Blood is sonically minimalist but emotionally huge. The songs’ raw nerves are laid bare, their emphases subtly altered and re-lit. He doesn’t simply revamp the obvious calling-card numbers: there’s no Sledge Hammer or Games Without Frontiers, for example, and Biko isn’t included despite a stirring rendition in the sibling 3D concert movie. Don’t Give Up is here, with Ane Brun tackling the Kate Bush parts with a Björk-like tremble that seems jarring on first listen but increasingly moving with each return visit. More often than not, Gabriel appears intent on shifting the surface and context of the songs as much as possible. The Rhythm of the Heat without percussion is an insane idea on paper, but the 46-piece orchestra work their fingers to the bone finding equally valid ways to drive it forward. San Jacinto is completely unaffected and profoundly affecting, Gabriel’s sandy, soulful voice somehow both understated and magniloquent. There’s a groundswell of opinion among fans and critics that his third solo album, usually known as Melt, was his finest, and its intense, twitchy, paranoid opening track Intruder is here lean and streamlined, its breathy presence even more accentuated. Arranger John Metcalfe realises Gabriel’s ambitions throughout, whether it’s on the comparatively jaunty Solsbury Hill or the sweeping power of Red Rain. And they can shuffle In Your Eyes all they like, but its chorus remains stoically hooky and uplifting. Ever curious, Gabriel inserts five minutes of ‘ambient noise’ – in truth, near-silence – recorded on, where else, Solsbury Hill, by the name of A Quiet Moment. This album’s a string-driven thing swinging between bravado and bleakness, and always beautiful. - Chris Roberts mp3@v0 Track List 1. The Rhythm of the Heat 2. Downside Up (ft. Melanie Gabriel) 3.
