The Go!Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

Broken Social Scene - Self Titled

    Iron and WIne - Rarities

PHISH ISLAND TOUR - working my way through the magic!!!!

  2. When's the next "countdown" to an acoustic version of McGrupp? [color:purple]I'm tingling!

To shed some light, the Catapult was a shoutout from a fan and McGrupp was played off the top of his head dedicated specfically to the people who hate him on the internet.

This should not change your opinion, merely clarify those specific choices. As stated in my Buffalo review, I was both excited and disappointed.

  3. Both could rule, Both could suck... I believe I stated before but in the end it was worse. Both were just mediocre.

    @Trey solo acoustic.

Overall, it's always good to check out a show. It was good to see Trey. As for his band, I do not like 70 Volt parade. Skeeto knows two fills; a full 4 bar roll and a one minute double kick barrage. Skeeto, lay off the double kick. Tony Hall good. Ray, great. But who the fuck is Les Hall and how do I apply for his job, which appears to be play a few notes on piano, light cigarette, rock out a few more notes, finish cigarette, leave keyboards mid song, perform heavy metal guitar moves and then weakly underpin Trey's riffs. The girls, not great, not bad.

The first part of the show got me moving a couple of times but I don't like the new swing part in Push Until the Day. The new tunes, well, umm, I just can't get into them. They are poorly crafted IMO. Bring on the acoustic set.

Remember how I earlier stated that I hoped I got those goosebumps like 99? I did. And more. And then I got a Catapult and a McGrupps. And then I got sad. Because this is one thing Trey didn't want to become and he did. A nostalgia act. All I wanted was the band back. PS Guess I should have gone to Utica for that.

The rest of the show had my favorite 70 Volt moment in Cincinati, followed very quickly by being impressed and then just overwhelmed by the heaviness, to the point were I ceased to enjoy it. The rest of the set was weak and encore not so good.

It honestly felt like Trey, after the acoustic set, just couldn't let go of the sentimentality of the acoustic set, in which he paid tribute to many of his former collaborators. And as Phish once prided themselves on the hose, the hard edged attack of most of Trey's builds in the jams felt more like a fire hose, no interaction just attack. I left feeling like I would love to see Trey again, but I will never see a 70 Volt Parade show again. Did not float my boat.

    Leafs/Sabres

What a rush going to enemy territory and seeing more Leafs jerseys than the home team. Unfornately, we could not stay out of the penalty box. And as much as I would like to blame the loss on Berg as usual, Klee was worse. Jason Allison may be the fattest man in hockey, something you don't really pick up on TV but live, his ass is so fat. And Eddie, you crazy wandering fool ultimately coughed up 2 pucks, one of which lead to the GWG. A fun experience however, again, merely mediocre.

  4. Wow, this is a polarizing topic. I'm surprise more Sens fans are on here slaggin.

As for the Trey show, I'm going in with this exact mindset.

1)No matter what, I've never enjoyed a TAB show (4 in total) more than I have enjoyed a Phish show.

2)That being said, I've never enjoyed any show more than a Phish show.

    3) Venue and seating can be key. Who knows maybe being five rows away from Trey on acoustic will give me the same chills it did in Arn Arbor in 99? I hope so.

    4) It will take a complete suck-fest for me not to like this show. One or two bad songs does not make a bad show so long as something got me going along the way.

    5) I still hate the new album. I don't expect that to change.

    6) That being said, often live shows open up a songs door to me and I don't hate the song anymore (see Scents and Subtle Sounds for details)

7)My relationship to Trey and to the Leafs bare a scary resemblance when it comes to loyality.

I dunno. I just hope all is forgiven by the haters when Trey comes through on his not yet started Magnum Opus, to be finished shortly after he works through his adult-lesence. I can't shake the feeling he'll do something great again.

  5. I feel the need to send some encouragement out to these young guys this morning. Last night's show was a better than average excuse to drink in L-town last night. I love what the Salt Lounge has done with the stage in the back part now. Good move!

As for the band, at times they reminded me of Nero, at times Phish, at times Umphrey's (alot!) with the only problem being I struggled to find "them". Despite their manager's constant insistence to me that there was nothing like this, I feel the opposite. Everything is like this. The covers were very clever but originals need a voice of their own with just a tad less self indulgence and greater focus on geling with the crowd. Props to the guys as they looked like they were having a blast (bass player especially). I will be curious to see if they can take obvious talent and turn it into something special in a few years. I'll check in then.

  6. Thanks Basher for picking up the ball here. Life is busy and sorry this fell in your lap (not to mention the fact you look like a genius right now)

I think come merge time all this respect crap is about to head south. Thank God we look to be heading for a strong bunch around at the end.

    Judd forever.

  7. As stated in the 5 disc thread, I've tried with the new album. I've really tried. But this album is the worst of the entire Phish/TAB catalog. Even One Man's Trash will garnish more listens than this.

That being said, I am really looking forward to a 30 min + Mr Completely in Buffalo, no purple font, really.

  8. My Morning Jacket - Z - it may not be their OK Computer by "Off the Record" is the most irresistable track on file right now

    BSS - Boombastic

Wolf Parade - Apologies to Queen Mary -...and to Modest Mouse, but once you get past the obvious influence of their producer, this fucker rocks. Turn it up loud!

The Band - A Musical History Disc 3 - I was physically dancing around the house to Slippin and Slidin last night, worth it for the extras

The Magic Numbers - Good solid poppy stuff.

2 Discs That Didn't Even Make into Rotation

Dandy Worhols - Odditorium - Phew! I love the Dandys but this is masturbatory crap,

Trey Anatasio - Shine - Got the advanced copy. Tried once. Tried twice. Might try one more time. This album does nothing for me. WAY over-produced, weak songwriting. Hope he does something more special live in Buffalo.

  9. from Billboard.com

In other Phish news, a DVD is in the works of the band's June 17, 2004, concert at Brooklyn, N.Y.'s Keyspan Park. Expected sometime next year, the project is also expected to include soundcheck footage as well as some bonus songs from the next night's show at the same venue, which boasted a guest appearance from Jay-Z.

Why the crazy choice in shows for release?

    Vegas 6/10

    IT 8/10

    Brooklyn reserving judgement

That being said, I'll probably buy it.

  10. I think anytime an artist with more than 20 years experience under their belt make an album that still resonates with the general public or at the very least doesn't totally blow, it is hailed as their best in years or worse, a masterpiece. Who knows? Maybe it is that good to Madonna fans but MarcO is right on the hyberbole thing.

What really pisses me off is the misuse of the word. A masterpiece, at least to my understanding, means the best work of one's career. While I consider Highway 61 Revisited to be an unbelievably good album, I consider Blonde on Blonde to be his masterpiece. When Love and Theft came out, so too did the masterpiece label. Even if you go by the alternate definition of the word, that being an outstanding achievement, I don't think it rated that high. He is back. He's got some good songs and a kick-ass band. It was a great piece of Americana. But masterpiece? It will have to get in line.

Abbey Road is a masterpiece. Led Zeppelin IV is a masterpiece. Dark Side of the Moon a masterpiece. Or is it The Wall? Geez, now I gotta go fight with myself. Ciao.
