  1. St. Vincent - Marry Me Just picked this up the other day because my wife thought the cover looked intriguing and it's great. There are a couple of tunes on her myspace that'll give you an idea of what it sounds like.

    Movies?

I saw The Assassination of Jesse James last night. It was very good, but should have been cut shorter. This review sums it up: "Every element of this Western is beautifully rendered. So why is it a chore to sit through?" I love zombie movies and was excited to see Fido, but was disappointed. I enjoyed Sunshine. Picked it up without having heard anything about it and thought it was great. I've been watching lots of documentaries lately. There's one called Commune that is quite fun to watch if you've got any hippy in you. Manufacturing Landscapes, about Edward Burtynsky's photography, is incredible and highly recommended.
  4. I think this is the reason people get worked up over issues like this. Minority groups, religious and otherwise, have traditionally been excluded from having a voice in defining who "we" are, and the recital of this prayer in government is indicative that this tradition of exclusion is still very much in practice. Using a non-denominational prayer or a moment of silence makes way more sense. Personally, I'd prefer if they read a statement about their responsibilities to their constituents and then a had a moment of silence to reflect upon that.
  5. The new Constantines album Kensington Heights was leaked awhile back. The album rocks, can't wait for the tour.

  8. The Economist is a good news mag, but I get it second-hand from my Pa, so I'm always reading month-old news.
  9. That was a rhetorical question. To be clear -- I was suggesting that this was not the motivation for Harper's decision to change this policy. I reckon it was done to test public reaction to social conservative policy while throwing a bone to the party faithful. Now they get to thumb their noses at the opposition for getting away with changing an ideologically charged policy without submitting to a vote on the issue. Three birds -- one stone.
  10. I'm weery of people who don't know that leery and wary are separate words.
  11. Sure. If you break in to my house to do me harm and I can stop you or get away without killing you, I reckon that's a better course of action that putting a bullet in your brain. I'm certainly not suggesting that we treat those who kill in self-defence as murderers, I'm just saying that whenever there is a choice we ought to try to preserve life. The Conservatives' new policy flies in the face of Canadian values, for what? To save making a few phone calls and sending a few letters on behalf of a doomed person? Is this supposed to improve Canadian-American relations in some way? Or are Harper and the gang testing the waters of public reaction in advance of bringing forward socially conservative legislation?
  12. Agreed, but I don't like states that kill people either. The killing of people by other people ought to be opposed in every scenario.
