  9. Friday 9 November 8pm (doors at 7pm) St. Brigid’s Centre for the Arts and Humanities (formerly St. Brigid’s Church) 179 Murray Street, Ottawa Tickets $15 Cash bar This will be the first concert in this historic church since its transformation into a performance venue for arts and culture, and fittingly, it combines Celtic tradition with modern influences to create something new. Ardyth & Jennifer are a pair of singer-songwriters from Nova Scotia who weave their two Celtic harps and two voices into gorgeous tapestries. Bringing their eclectic mix of harps, vocals, bass, percussion, whistles and original songs to audiences throughout the Maritime Provinces and into the New England States they have developed a unique style that combines elements of traditional music with the influence of jazz and contemporary songwriting. They have played at many premier folk festivals and concert venues, showcased in the Roots Room and songwriters’ events at the East Coast Music Awards and at the Juno Fest in Halifax and they have been featured on many local radio and television programs. As they have traveled, their unique style has earned them critical acclaim within the music community and an ever-growing fan base in the Maritimes. Representing the other side of the Atlantic Ocean is Gareth Pearson . Gareth is an acoustic guitar player and composer from Cwmbran, South Wales in the UK. Although only sixteen years old, Gareth’s extraordinary talent has gained him wide recognition among guitar fans. He has toured with Tommy Emmanuel and Jan Akkerman , played at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention in Nashville and was personally invited to open for Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes at their New Year Party in New York. He has also opened for Ray Davies, founding member of the legendary 60's band The Kinks, John Renbourn, Woody Mann and others. Gareth’s influences are wide, ranging from guitarists such as Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Jerry Reed and others but his own distinctive voice is clearly audible in his own compositions, some of which appear on his new release Adrenaline Rush which is available to order online or at his concerts. In performance, his “exuberance of youth,†as one fellow musician put it, is clearly evident. 10. Why isn't there a "None of the Above" option? I'm rather like a... a... well, an owl...
  11. I think I've seen it... or maybe I've seen it reviewed. Either way,it's awesome. How do people feel about Sudoku? Personally, I prefer crosswords, but those Sudoku are [color:red]SO addictive!
  12. Movies Ate My Brain with Robert Fontaine "Put aside your preconceptions and get ready to re-evaluate every movie you've ever seen." — Ken Rockburn Born into a French-Canadian family of musicians and film buffs, Robert Fontaine demonstrated an early aptitude for drumming. Eventually tiring of the sounds of pots and pans, his parents gave him a real drum set for his eighth birthday. Playing in bands through his high-school years, Robert became a professional musician in 1980 after a brief career in the public service. During the next three years, he toured Eastern Canada and the Maritimes in various jazz, rock, and blues groups. Back in school by the mid-eighties, he graduated magna cum laude in 1986, obtaining a degree in communication from the University of Ottawa. It was during his years at Ottawa U that he developed a love of radio, hosting various music and public affairs programs on university radio. It was also during this time that he began to obtain work as a freelance writer-broadcaster, reviewing records, writing articles for French daily Le Droit, and covering the Ottawa International Jazz festival for CBC Radio as well as for the French-language network, Radio-Canada. A guest appearance on the popular CBC drive-home program, All In a Day, in 1992 led to his being offered a regular slot as a movie critic on the show. Over the years, his insightful and often cheeky film reviews have become a weekly highlight for many CBC Radio listeners. As well as being passionate about movies and music, Robert is a devoted baseball fan. Married, he lives in Gatineau with his wife, Sylvie, and their teenaged son, David. "Annie," their very large (but gentle) dog, has been known on occasion to dine on remote-control units. As always, the feature will be followed by our always-surprising open mike, and there will be competition for the Object of Desire to round off the night. Come on out, bring your own work to share or write it on the spot! The event is at Swizzles Bar & Grill, 246B Queen St. in downtown Ottawa, below the Green Papaya Restaurant. Need more info? 18. In its own way it was kinda fun... but if had lasted more than a couple days, there would have been serious trouble... Yeesh, I don't want to even think about it.
