Brad,
People are rarely as thoughful when they get birthday gifts for others, that was one of the best.
Paisley,
A GOOD teacher makes all the difference in the world. A bad teacher can make the same difference.
Come to Ottawa and take lessons from Mr.Velvet. He is the best guitar teacher I've ever met.
I realize that's probably not in the cards so don't settle for just any teacher. ask around to people whos playing you really respect and get some recommendations.

I love that book! Wonder what I ever did with it ...
I've given it away four times. My wife got me another copy last birthday.

quit life and go on tour!
edit to add:
the best guitar instruction I've ever read:
zen guitar
available at bookstores everywhere.

if brad mehldau is playing melodica at the local petting zoo, go see him over Galactic. I believe that he is trul something special.

Matt,
The Zvex nano head is $595.00 It actually sounds really good. You can run it through any 16 or 8ohm cab. its looks so funny on top of a Marshall 4x12.
The king of low wattage amps in the store has to be The Carr Mercury. Its 8 watts switchable to 2watts, 1/2watt and 1/10 watt. And it sounds good at 1/10 watt which is amazing.

Tooly,
not a lot of kids looking to try the Trey guitar. I bet it would be hard to find three 15 year olds that know who Trey is
That being said, I find that the kids that come in are incredibily respectful of the merchandise. Also we're respectful of them and treat them like humans
All of the stuff here is ok to be played. I've never understood the "do not touch" attitude in guitar stores. How else are you going to know if you like it?

Brad,
yeah I don't think you could do much with that mod on a guitar like yours, which is like mine. I would totally recommend the tone cap though.
-
Brad,
I'm no electronics guy, but the orange drop caps are polypropylene and hand made as opossed to the ceramic ones. I'm not sure why there is such a difference but there certainly is a HUGE difference. The bridge pickup went from un usable to perfect.
The 4-way switch in teles (with two sigle coils) gives you: 1.bridge pickup 2.both in series (both pickups working as a humbucker. this is the normal tele middle position) 3. Both pickups in parallel. This is 2 single coils working seperately as two single coils (fat gretsch sound))4. Neck pickup

Thanks Mike,
Our new tech James Lang is really quite an excellent technician. He's been here for 10 months now doing great work. I had him do some mods to some of my guitars.
Most importantly, my Asat Bluesboy semi-hollow that has spent most of its life with me on a stand as a backup guitar has been made into my number one by installing a brass nut (which he shaped out of a brass blank!) and installing a Sprague orange drop capacitor on the tone pot. I always felt that the bridge pickup was unusable because of how much top end it had. overly harsh would be how I would describe it. With the new tone cap I can roll back the tone to warm it up but not lose any clarity. It sounds phenomenal now.
The next pic is of two tone capacitors. The one on the left is the new cap, the one on the right is the stock cap you would find on most guitars from the factory. They are the same value.
I've also seen some great mods he's done installing a 4-way switch in teles. everyone with a tele should have that mod!
I also had him do a ebony truss rod cover for my PRS soapbar. Purely cosmetic, but it looks friggin cool!
Its amazing how little things can make such big changes in an instrument. To go from almost there to totally there is actually quite a distance.

Congrats!!!

You certainly can't go wrong with Jeff Beck. He is just so musical. Alan Holdsworth is a mutant worth checking out. Incredible technique, always great players with him. Maybe a little too much on the chops side but still impressive.
-
Thanks to Dave and Mike for having me out. Good times for sure.

I forgot about this site. Too funny!
I didn't post that picture. yipes. it seems to have changed.

well. The album is in fact called "Is it Morning?" and the first track is "Is it morning yet?" no typos.
I'll have my long legged blonde swedish secretary fix it in the morning.

check out DIG. Its a documentary about The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Incredible. Something like 7 years of footage capturing both bands rise and one's ultimate demise. Probably the best rock movie I've ever seen.

You probably do need to change the tubes in your amp, but you'd probably never need to change the tubes in an imp amp. They were designed for use with missle guidence systems and were designed to withstand a lot of abuse.

And honestly, there is no small amount of envy involved from musicians who see one of their fellow players doing so well financially, especially when so many of them who are far superior as improvisors and musicians in
general have trouble just making a living.
Boo fucking hoo Pat. For the most part it is certainly not the best players making the money. Just ask Alan Holdsworth what he thinks of Pat Metheny.

but it's got TUBES!!
-
Although I'm mostly listening to wax cylinders, these new fangled devices seem incredibly cool.
check out Z.Vex Imp Amp
In addition to making the most forward thinking badass guitar effects, he's branched off into hi-fi with this "aimed ay ipod" type stereo amp.

I wonder if they are still using Jerry's head shot for their posters?

Every time I see this thread's title I think it says "The wisdom of Mark Tonin"
