  1. An ugly fight last night and really tough to score. Hopkins clutched-and-grabbed for the whole 12 rounds, although he did flash knock-down Calzaghe in the 1st. In the end, the right decision - a split - was made. Calzaghe is the WBO Light-heavyweight champ.
  2. If Stairs can do what he did last year, then the Jays won't have to look to sign another big ticket DH.
  3. After a lengthy discussion with my wife, I've changed my original rating from **** to ****1/2. Great doc!
  4. The most entertaining game so far this playoff. Go Bruins!
  5. It's not funny in a comedic sense Mike, but it's a great doc.
  6. I never saw that video, or at least I don't think I have. Lips and Reiner spoke after the screening, well Lips did all the talking, along with the director, editors and cinematorgrapher. Lips is an awesome dude, but intense and overly enthusiastic... but he's got an infectious personality that's for sure. The film was screened at the Elizabeth Bader Theatre near the ROM and its been beautifully renovated so that the acoustics and audio are freaking lively. The decibel-level yesterday felt like appropriately like Anvil concert. It gave me a headache. Rock and Roll!! Oh yeah, Anvil played the Bovine Sex Club last night, so they are still looking for their big break, although I think this film may be their real meal-ticket.
  7. [blurb] ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL Written speed-metal fast by David Ball I went to the Hot Docs Festival yesterday in Toronto for the second screening of the documentary, Anvil! The Story of Anvil . Wow, what a fucking movie (and swearing is appropriate). This film wowed audiences at this year's Sundance Film Festival and I can certainly see why. For the uninitiated, Anvil remain a Toronto band almost 30 years after they were a big part of the wave of metal's rebirth in the early 80's (anyone remember their most influential album Metal on Metal from 1982 and the minor hit it spawned of the same name?), however they are the only band of the "Big Four" that never made it: Anvil, Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth. [/blurb] The film follows the two remaining members, leader/guitarist Steve Lips Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner, as they work their day jobs all-the-while still trying to get their big breakthrough while playing small gigs here and there. We see Kudlow and Reiner go through some sad and funny trials and tribulations on a low-budget 2005 European tour where they play tiny clubs, dance halls and festivals, sometimes with only 5 or 100 people in attendance. The movie is a real roller-coaster ride of emotions, but we want them to make it because they are still plugging away in their 50's while firmly believing in themselves and their music (and newer bands are ripping-off their sound and making millions). Lips is a real likable guy and an eternal optimist... or eternal dreamer, depending on how you choose to look at him. He sold me on Anvil getting "screwed by record companies and management" and I'm almost convinced that they will indeed make it big. The film is beautifully shot and edited, and was directed skilfully by Sacha Gervasi (who wrote the Steven Spielberg movie, The Terminal). There's some great use of clips and interviews from their early 80's heyday - J.D. Roberts never looked so good - along with recent testimonials from peers like Lars Ulrich, Slash, Anthrax's Scott Ian, Lemmy and members of Slayer. This is one of the best rock & roll documentaries I've seen in quite some time. The director was asked after the film in the question and answer segment if the movie will get theatical release. He responded with an affirmative. So, check your local listings in the not-to-distant future for this film. (****1/2 out of 5) April 19/08
  8. Then the CBC will have to find another announcer with a British-sounding accent.
  9. I hope the CBC starts broadcasting TFC games in HD.
  10. Actually, the pre-fight show starts at 9:00 and the fight is scheduled for 9:45. I'm not sure about an undercard, but I don't think they'll be broadcasting it. This fight is squeezed nicely between hockey, barring overtime.
  11. One of the biggest and most interesing fights in a while. Most are picking Welshman Calzaghe (WBO, IBF Super-middleweight Champ) to win, but whatever happens, this will be a war. Festivities begin at 9:30 on TSN and TSN-HD. Here's a CBC article about tonight's fight: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/iorfida/2008/04/hopkinscalzaghe_no_second_fidd.html
  12. I'm recording it. You need HD to get it. Can't wait!
  13. His pitch count was still at the "acceptable" level for both CG's. He won't get burned-out since he's never been burned-out in his career. The bullpen sucks right now too.
  14. That'll be a hell of a show in Kingston.
  15. I know I've been a little negative towards this impending strike (given that I started this thread), but the TTC employees put up with a tonne of verbal and physical abuse. A recent survey in the Toronto Star listed that a staggering percentage of TTC drivers and booth operators are abused on a daily basis. If they do strike, I'm sure this abuse will only increase.
  16. Toronto is one of the only major cities in the world that doesn't have some form of government funding for transit. No wonder the TTC is always running a deficit and why this deficit is such a big deal. Edit: And compared to other major world cities, the cost of taking transit in Toronto is fairly cheap.
  17. The Black Keys should excite anyone who's heard them and will melt your face when and if you see them live.
  18. I had no idea he was sick. I just bought Born To Run for my wife and we cranked it two days ago. Sad news.
  19. I've heard some tracks and I liked them. I don't mind them experimenting. I think they've pushed the Delta down people's throats so going off in different tangents is at least challenging.
  20. Wonderful quality on that Letterman video:) Is there a more exciting band that just flies under the radar? I don't think so. No wonder Junior Kimbrough's wife thinks they get it: North Mississippi Delta blues the way it should be played and honoured. What would she know? She was only married to the greatest Delta bluesman since Fred McDowell (no offence R.L.).
  21. Any time you can see Doc pitch a complete game makes for a good time.

    Popcorn!

For the love of Mike, don't eat microwave popcorn. The lining in the bag is toxic.
