  3. Like many here, I grew up in the golden age of drug fueled children's programming ... Frightenstein, Scooby Doo, pretty much everything ever done by Sid and Marty Kroft (The Buggaloos? LIDSVILLE, for crying out loud?) Mr. Show's Altered States Of Druggachussetts sketch pretty much hit the nail on the head.
  4. "I know exactly what he is talking about. I keep mung beans on a damp paper towel in my desk ... very nutricious, but it smells like death."

  6. Gah, this thing is going to fill up before I get home and can verify the title of the song I want ... can anyone tell me the title of the Nick Cave secret track on the Songs In The Key Of X compilation/soundtrack CD? (Not Red Right Hand, which is listed in the tracklisting).
  7. Did Elvis even write a song?? Honestly does anyone know if he did? For some reason I don't think so. He did end up with a few writing credits, but I think those were from publishing negotiations and I don't think he actually did any "writing" of the songs. I don't really care for the "He didn't write anything" slam on Elvis anyway. The idea of a musician having to write all of his own material to have any credibility is a relatively new phenomenon (late 60s, at any rate) and before that it was pretty much given that songwriting and performance were separate. There were some artists in the 50s who wrote most of their own material ( Check Berry, Buddy Holly), but they were very much the exception to the rule. I don't know if, for instance, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holliday or Aretha Franklin ever wrote a note of their own music but are still considered great artists. Why should Elvis be considered any different? Is the art of the vocalist or the interpreter that disregarded? Rant over ...
  8. Ah well, at least the post did what was the main intent, it got discussion restarted on the topic.
  9. I know I am cheating by adding twice to this one, but it seems to have stalled out, so ... #222. Best guitar rock songs without any guitar solos: 1. 10. Let's not forget the classic intro to the Franken and Davis routine on Dead Ahead by Brent Mydland , it went something like : "I really hate to do this, because I've never heard of these guys before ... and I don't think they're very funny. Anyway ... here's Frank and Dave." There was also that odd little bit at the intermission of Ticket To New Years where Tom Davis interviews Jerry Garcia giving his favorite recipes.

  12. I was pretty sure Cosby was on at 8, not 9 ... the way I recall it, it was Cosby at 8, Family Ties at 8:30, Cheers at 9, Night Court at 9:30 and LA Law at 10.
  13. Never really got into the New York Dolls until I saw the documentary Killer and gained a whole new appreciation of them.
  14. What about Geoff Smith, the Frugal Gourmet?
  15. I'm not sure how The Band or, for that matter, Tom Waits are underappreciated. No Marillion is wrong but , then again, it's Rolling Stone. Roxy Music are awesome.
  16. As I said before, I am all in favor of pedestrian rights when I am on foot. When I am driving, it is a completely different set of circumstances.
  17. The expanded and remastered versions, including cool live covers of George Jackson and Six Days On The Road sung by the late Trevor Lucas.
  18. Reminds me of a bit on an old SNL Weekend Update about a hostile takeover attempt of every company on the Dow Jones index by a retired schoolteacher : "I won't lie to you ... this is leveraged to the hilt."
  19. I've got an idea, but it's going to require a tugboat ...
  20. And they hand over the flasher to Bob Vance of Vance Refrigeration ... Wasn't Dwight's Jimface from the end of last week's episode the greatest thing ever?
  21. Say, isn't that the cover to Brain Salad Surgery by ELP?
  22. Torn between Persistance of Memory by Salvador Dali and Christine's World by Andrew Wyeth.
