  1. Since I have been listening to loads of Deep Purple these days, here is a bit of a grim one from their history. Traditonally, they were more boozers or tokers than hard drug users, but the Mark 4 lineup basically fell apart from bassist Glenn Hughes' cocaine addiction and guitarist Tommy Bolin's involvement with heroin. One of the cappers was on a tour of Japan, where Bolin basically got off the plane having shot up some bad heroin, and found his left arm was basically paralyzed. He played a show or two where he was basically useless apart for some rudimentary riffing ... and these shows were actually recorded and released! (The Last Concert In Japan album is interesting if you want to hear what Deep Purple would sound like without a guitar player, but that's it ... a much better choice to hear live Mark 4 Purple is the On The Wings Of A Russian Foxbat archival release). Tommy Bolin wouln't live much more than a year after that, OD at 24, a tragic end to a hugely talented player.

While we are trotting out Keith Moon stories, let's not forget the time he took some sort of monkey tranquilizers or something before a gig, and his arms wouldn't work ... they ended up pulling somebody out of the audience to play with them.

  2. J. Garcia Records is delighted to announce the upcoming release of two long-sought Jerry Garcia live recordings with Rhino Entertainment, both available now for pre-order from the Jerry Garcia Store.

JERRY GARCIA BAND: LIVE AT SHORELINE and THE JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 1: LEGION OF MARY are now available for pre-order at the Jerry Garcia Store and will be released on August 9 and August 23, respectively.

JERRY GARCIA BAND: LIVE AT SHORELINE is the first-ever DVD release of a Jerry Garcia Band show, filmed on September 1, 1990, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. A Grateful Dead show was originally scheduled for that date, but the Dead's brilliant, passionate keyboard player, Brent Mydland, died in late July. Rather than cancel the gig, the Jerry Garcia Band stepped in to deliver one of their most heartfelt performances.

If you pre-order LIVE AT SHORELINE DVD at this specially discounted price, you can receive your copy on the August 9th release date.* Also available as an exclusive from jerrygarcia.com is a Jerry Garcia Band Shoreline t-shirt for only an additional $10 when purchased with the DVD.

THE JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 1: LEGION OF MARY is the first-ever live release of recordings by the legendary Legion of Mary, the vibrant, loose, and jazzy quintet Jerry formed at the end of 1974 with Merl Saunders, Martin Fierro, John Kahn, and Ron Tutt. LEGION OF MARY features fourteen tracks on two CDs taken from seven shows in San Francisco, Berkeley, and Portland. All selections are previously unreleased soundboard recordings, newly mastered with HDCD sound.

THE JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 1: LEGION OF MARY will be released on August 23, but if you pre-order Legion of Mary from jerrygarcia.com, you can receive your order on the release date* and you will also receive an exclusive, additional disc of Legion of Mary - more than 70 minutes of never-before-released soundboard recordings.

The summer of 2005 will prove to be especially poignant for Dead Heads and all music fans, as it marks the tenth anniversary of Jerry's death. Stay tuned for further announcements of events and releases of interest in the coming weeks.

As always, we are happy to hear from you. Please write to us at purejerry@jerrygarcia.com with your comments and suggestions for future releases. Both of the releases announced in this newsletter were inspired by your spirited requests, as will forthcoming editions of the Pure Jerry series.

Thanks again. We are sure you will enjoy these two releases, especially with the additional item available exclusively to customers of jerrygarcia.com and the Jerry Garcia Store.

*Please select express shipping for release date delivery. Please note, if you purchase Live at Shoreline DVD and Legion of Mary in the same transaction, both items will be shipped together on August 19.

  3. How is Deep Purple with Steve Morse on guitar, or vice versa? I'm a big fan of Morse (esp. his work in/with The Dixie Dregs, but also The Steve Morse Band), but he wouldn't have been my first choice to replace Richie Blackmore (due to stylistic differences, rather than ability).

    Aloha,

    Brad

From what I have heard from him, he riffs like Blackmore but solos like Morse, which is the ideal solution I guess. Technically speaking, he wasn't the first in this round to replace Blackmore, as he was initally replaced by Joe Satriani for a tour of Japan before Morse came in full time. Fiona was for a while in a Deep Purple cover band and their opinion was they liked Morse but missed Blackmore, but I think given personal disputes that is highly unlikely that he will come back. I like him fine in the role, but then again I liked Tommy Bolin in the group, so YMMV.

  4. I'll give you that. The current frontman for Purple didn't particularly impress me, as an activist or a replacement singer (although I really enjoyed they're set).

Err, not to be a nitpicker, but the vocalist with Deep Purple at Live 8 was Ian Gillan, long time vocalist and player on such Purple classic albums as In Rock, Fireball and Machine Head (the "Smoke On The Water" album). Yes, he has gotten a bit older, a bit paunchy and lost the burn on his vocal fastball, but hell so have I .... thing being he wasn't really a "replacement" vocalist, unless you mean how he replaced Rod Evans waaaaay back in the early 70s (and Joe Lynn Turner again in the early 90s)

  5. Is the web cast still going? I taped it, but the fricking Canadian broadcast showed every GD note by A Simple Plan but didn't show a bunch of sets I wanted to see (Brian Wilson in Berlin, Roxy Music in Tokyo, Dave Matthews in Philadelphia). Lousy Canadians ...

  6. 3somes -- well, for one thing, i highly, highly, HIGHLY doubt there are any consentual, happy 3somes where all 3 parties are interested in committing to each other for life. generally 3somes are not equal relationships (or "relationships" at all), and the whole point of the commitment of marriage is that you are giving yourself to that ONE person. not two people or 10 people or whatever, just ONE.

Not trying to start a fight or anything but I know lots of people in the polyamory community that would strongly disagree with you.
