    New LPC Leader?

    http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20081018/liberals_mccallum_081018/20081018?hub=TopStories Aloha, Brad
  2. Yeah, I spotted that a while ago on jambase, and might go (and if I go, I'll try and record it). Aloha, Brad
  3. I didn't even try for tickets via TM, so all I have to offer is today's random Phishy product placement spotting: I just caught an episode of NCIS, in which one character is a smoker, whose brand of choice is "Llamas" (in a pack that bears a striking resemblance to another, real, brand...). Aloha, Brad
  4. Colin Powell endorses Obama Aloha, Brad
  5. Brothers Chaffey put on a great show last night, but the real surprise was the opening act: The Grass, from Nova Scotia. Raunchy, raucus rock'n'roll, with a really fun frat-party/garage-band feel to it. Aloha, Brad

    NYC for NYE

Surprise Me Mr. Davis (which is comprised of Nathan Moore and The Slip) and The Duo (Marco Benevento and Joe Russo) is playing at B.B. King Blues Club/Grill, starting at 1:30am. http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/00004124ECC7785D?artistid=1254605&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=1 http://www.jambands.ca/sanctuary/showtopic.php?fid/11/tid/248889/ Aloha, Brad
  7. OK, I rewatched it all. The guy I saw was Robert Brocklebank, President of the Glebe Community Association, and he and Ed Hand (of Rogers) were talking about "residences along Holmwood." They mentioned, however, that there weren't a lot of details, but they did talk about how people in the new residences would have to handle having 30-year leases, as their residences would be part of the overall project. Aloha, Brad
  8. The "Podium" show with the press conference is on Rogers 22 right now (Saturday night, 7pm). Aloha, Brad
  9. Bump. Velvet, if you're available, I think you'd really dig these guys. Aloha, Brad
  10. I recall the whole venue being GA for the Hampton shows in 2003. Is it now just GA for the floors, and assigned seating for the rest of it? Aloha, Brad
  11. Unfortunately, I can't remember the guy's name*, but he was talking about the effect on the residences in the area, and how the fact that the project includes building residences in an already residential area (it was on one particular named sidestreet near or behind the complex) wasn't a bad thing. If I catch a repeat of the program (which might be tough, as it wasn't a regularly scheduled thing; I think, though, that it was being broadcast as part of Rogers Ottawa's "Podium" program), I'll try to catch the guy's name. Aloha, Brad * I saw Doucet's comments, and know who he is, so it wasn't him.
  12. After the press conference, they showed an interview with a city councillor for the Glebe, and he seemed OK with the idea (or as OK as he could be given how early we are in the project). Aloha, Brad
  13. http://www.jambands.ca/sanctuary/showtopic.php?tid/248655/ I think the cover's $8, and I haven't found any listing of an opening act (which makes me wonder if Adam Puddington, who often plays with Brothers Chaffey, might do a short opening set, as he's done at past BC shows), so we should get two heavy sets of rock-and-roll*. Is anybody else going to be out for this? Aloha, Brad * Or whatever you want to call the music of Brothers Chaffey. I'd almost call them a rockabilly band.
  14. There's a press conference going on now; the project is called "Lansdowne Live" and they have a website set up for it: http://www.lansdownelive.ca/ Aloha, Brad
  15. http://www.ottawasun.com/News/OttawaAndRegion/2008/10/17/7119936.html Aloha, Brad
  16. Has anybody tried CPR accompanied by "Pumpkin" by The Tummies? Aloha, Brad
  17. The idea isn't totally my own. I remember an article by Bruce Schneier that I think (I can't find it now) said the same kind of thing (for network and computer security, rather than environmental technologies), namely that governments could make a big difference through their buying habits. Aloha, Brad
  18. That article leaves out something I think might work, and work well: forget federal politics. Even if the Greens won seats (heck, even if they became the official opposition), they still wouldn't be able to get any environmental legislation passed. Instead, I wonder if it would be more effective to work at either the provincial or (even better) the municipal level. Consider how much good a Green-ish mayor of a big city, like Toronto, could do, by putting environmental requirements in purchasing and service contracts (e.g., require that all contracts for vehicles used by the city move towards carbon neutrality, maybe staged over a number of years). This would help get around the "chicken and egg" problem for things like vehicles: car companies won't build and sell, say, cars that can run on natural gas until there's a demand for them, but there won't be any demand if they're not on the market*. By using the big wallet of a large city as "seed" money, it'd not only help the environment (consider how many vehicles are used by city of Toronto, even excluding the TTC), but would also give companies incentive to provide green technologies. Aloha, Brad * T. Boone Pickens pointed out that GM currently makes 19 different models of vehicles that can be powered by natural gas. They sell them in Europe and South America, but not North America.
  19. If you mean http://www.archive.org/details/plf2008-10-13.zman.fob.ccm4v.flac16 or http://www.archive.org/details/dead2008-10-13.m20.jklabs.722.burke.flac24 you got lucky, as it looks like they've been made unavailable "due to issues with the item's content." (My guess is that it's because shows by "The Dead" haven't been approved for uploads to the LMA. The uploaders of the above recordings tried an end-run by uploading them as Phil & Friends shows, which they weren't.) Aloha, Brad

  21. According to http://www.nbc.com/Movies_Specials_More/ it's on at 9:30pm (8:30pm Central time). Last week's episode can be viewed at http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/categories/weekend-update-thursdays/29439/ Aloha, Brad
  22. I just checked, and didn't see any listings for repeat showings. Aloha, Brad
  23. The subject says it all. I think it's another episode of the series that had Kaki King last week. Aloha, Brad
  24. Any tapers there??? What was the lot scene like? For the record, I did actually once record (at) a federal party's (Christmas) party (actually, I think may have been an MP's office Christmas bash), but just when the band was playing. Aloha, Brad
  25. I had forgotten just how good a record this is. It's really moody in places (in an almost Sade-meets-Laurie-Anderson kind of way), heavily rhythmic (helped out by a bunch of musicians from Mr. Something Something playing on a lot of the tracks) in others, and deeply personal ("Empty Bottles" is an honestly heart-wrenching tragedy, sung with stark bitterness) all over the place. Aloha, Brad
