  1. As for trippin' out to Cali...take a little drive (at least a full day) and camp along the coastal highway. There are some great out of the way places to camp..some of which you drive up steep, narrow dirt paths on cliffs, park, and hike in a short 30 minutes to camp. San Fran is great too. Lots of amazing food...check out Japan town for some nice spots. Also, for music, on the other side of the street from the Fillmore is the Boom Boom Room (Fillmore St and Geary Ave I believe). Don't know when you'll be there but the Motet is playing there on July 15th. Have fun!

  2. You can buy a karma in canada. Definitely. I got mine off ebay, though I have a friend who got a refurb one from tigerdirect.ca:

    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1097027&sku=M975-3058

Also have another friend who got it from a retailer in toronto, new... I just can't remember where.

Wow, that's awesome info. I've been wanting one of these for a while now. Do you know if there is a way to hook it up to a car stereo?? If so, that would seal the deal...

  3. The Rio Karma has a 20 gig drive and plays flac files as well. I'm sold on that alone... would love to get one. Problem is you can only get them off of Ebay b/c they aren't sold in Canada....flac files though, killer.

  4. Saw Tony and his band play down in Hood River, Oregon last 4th of July and had a blast. The live stuff doesn't stray too far from the album cuts but they are great songs, instrumentally and lyrically speaking. I would highly recommend picking up "Tony Furtado and the American Gypsies, Live" as it is a good indication of what you'll be getting yourself into. He is a really nice, down to earth guy if you get a chance to talk to him...This show will be worth whatever the ticket price will be..Enjoy! I hope to see him out West some day.

  5. Just wanted to say that GTB played a couple of great shows in Calgary and Canmore. Ive read a lot of negative reviews regarding these guys over the last half year or so and didn't really have any expectations before I saw them this past weekend. I had gone to a few GTB shows in the past couple of years and was always pretty indifferent about the their live shows...I never hated what I heard but I never got really excited either.

After going to back-to-back shows I can honestly say that the band has finally sparked my attention. At times, the "older" sound got a little stale to my ears...This "newer" direction they are taking their music to is much more interesting and way more entertaining. Many of the old tunes were played both nights (and played well) but mixed in with the newer songs (which were also played well). At times I heard hints of Broken Social Scene (not a comparison or a pigeon hole, just an observation....) and even, GASP, some Slip-like stylings as well. A really good mixture was brewing and I was diggin' both nights for sure.

These guys certainly aren't a hippy dippy noodle band...there seems to be a little more substance and emotion. So this time around, for me, the band was great and I think they are really developing their sound and carving out something quite unique. Ive also been a fan of the first album, "Birth of Confusion", since I bought it however long ago that was...Up until this point Ive always liked that album more than the live show..maybe not so much the case anymore...and as a final note, the new album is just as good. I see heavy rotation of both for a long time to come.

  6. Werd up! Yeah, what a fun weekend!! Two nights of GTB, some midnight running, Two nights at the HO and a whole lot of partying!! Ya'll certainly did a good number on me on the B-day...thanks!!

Alexis and Keri, it seems like a looong time ago that we were doin' up those trades. Many shows back and forth in years past...thanks. I'll be visiting Chatham at some point, Keri...I've made it a must after all the freaks ive met and chilled with over the years...

  7. The HiFI seems to be the new "IT" bar/club in Calgary...it's all the old Night Gallery staff plus some new ones...its OK. Tall ceilings, lots of sound gets bounced around. They would most likely even do postering for you.

Broken City is also a popular place as of late and I would recommend it for sure. They have nice sound and a decent layout, with a pretty consistent following of patrons that may be out on a Sun or Mon. Couldn't see Brew Brothers or Soda going off on a Sun or Mon. Night Gallery is still one of the best rooms in the city but the new managment seems to be running the place into the ground and word is certainly out on the streets about that!

Your best bets from the list above are either Broken City or the HiFi, but it seems to me that both follow weekly schedules that do not include live music on the dates you are planning to play....Calgary is a black hole when it comes to live music venue...

I would also toss out the Ship and Anchor Pub http://www.shipandanchor.com/homepage.html

People are always around at that place...you could probably have a good time there if you booked a Sunday afternoon gig as the place is usually packed any weekend afternoon.

    Good luck!

Just make sure you play the Canmore Hotel and everything will be fine....

  8. Well, for a slightly cheaper alternative to buying brand new ones, you can just rip out the straps and discard the footbed and sole..take the nice leather straps and buckles down to your favourite shoe smith and let them build you a new pair with your old broken in straps...should cost around 50-60 bucks, at least thats what they charge around here. Thats half price for all you wookies on a budget.

  9. Yeah, I like this CD. My take on the overall disc is a combination of Kid Rock/Jack Johnson/Sublime/Eminem

Some catchy tunes that I keep whistlin or hummin'. Great summer disc!

OH, and CKUA radio is probably one of, if not the best, radio stations I have ever heard, anywhere. For anyone that has lived out here and been a regular listener, you know what I'm saying. Here are two playlists from thursday...about a 6 hour block worth of tunes:
