  1. !!! nice job. You folks should go check out this show for sure. Saw him open for Mule in May and loved the set. They did and awesome percussion jam. Aussie trio that will put on a great show.....ARRG, im jealous once again. Hey shain, ever heard of Raq?? they play out of VT and might be a good fit for you guys...
  2. yup, i listened as well....shockinly good sound for a webcast. I managed to capture the second set as a wave file and have it split up and tracked in mp3 (bitrated of 256kbps). If anyone who missed it wants to grab some of these just to check it out, ill be sharing them on DC (SolarGarlic as well). I wouldn't worry about trying to burn these files as im sure many heads in Chicago got killer FM feeds of the show......

  3. hmm, tough call Mark. I havn't been to nearly as many shows as you guys but im still having a hard time deciding..

Phil in Bozeman, simply b/c it was my first time seeing Phil and his buddies in any setting.

Mule in Seattle. Made me a fan instantly! small venue, spur of the moment trip. good times.

hmm, this pick is tough. im gonna have to go w/ Spearhead from the recent Calgary Folk Fest. Not so much b/c of the music (though i did enjoy that as well), but b/c Calgary turns out to be a place with lots of cool people who aren't afraid to try new music...this is good!

honorable mention goes to the Nero show in Canmore, and the Antibalas show during jazz fest.

Ha, actually, thats most of the shows ive seen this year!

  4. Like just 4% of the population you are an ADMINISTRATOR (SECT)--detail-oriented and organized. You're an extrovert, but you lack the over-aggressive tendencies of obnoxious "go-getters." Very nice. However, you probably like getting up in other people's business--living through them a little... dude, sometimes you just gotta let it ride. Don't be such a busy-body.

bring the acts to their turf eh? UPRISING! its all about mehem and chaos (is it? i think so..). Ya'll should go rooftop on their asses:) set up a stage down there and play to all the passer by folk. get aressted, get publicity in all the local rags and go from there. Each band can plan a surprise attack of their own. then, after all the bands get out of jail, they can start booking gigs and people will be like "eh! aren't them those fellers that got tossed in the hole for jammin?? #@@#%$ ?? Must be a great jug band er sumpin, lets get the chillen and see em' !!". the house will be packed and the revolution will have begun. eventually we will even rule on the "Hill" .

    Good luck.

Oh, i like the other ideas ive read too:) Prom would be a KILLER theme, even if it was for your own personal enjoyment.

  6. Yo Treyter, havn't seen that one...gotta link?

Hey pudds, regardless of the actual date, its a fuggin cool pic eh? Its kind of a historic little mark for all us folks tryin' to make our own scene in 2002! 2002! holy crap, its the FUTURE. oh wait, huh?

  7. Awesome, Velvet. Just the person i was hoping would put in a couple pesos to this thread...

SO, im curioius, whats your take my theory of bands coming to the West to keep things fresh for everyone, as well as exposure. I know you guys recently did it and was wondering the impression it left on you. How and/or what would you like to see in the West to make your trips more worth while (of course, people in the club)??

  8. I agree with you Treyter. In my opinion, "our" bands should be trying to play in the U.S. I don't know how hard it is or how much it costs just to get down there but I think its very important that they do. Imagine the possibilities.....A canjam band gets recognized in the States...gives them a MUCH larger selection of venues/tours/cities to play.

I wonder how hard it is to invite a good band up to Canada to do a mini tour with, then get reciprocal treatment by that band and tour their area of the U.S with them??

  9. I agree, whore. I also think that in addition to the tapers, the trading of shns made a HUGE difference to BNB.

When Nero com back West, Im not sure if there will be a sizeable increase in the number of people that come out. Although, the colder months tend to bring more folks out b/c there are more people here that are from out of province (working the ski towns and such). Time will tell.

I saw Blue Quarter last night after the Folk Fest. Wasn't a packed house at all. I mean, there were people there, but not packed. Id say there were around 25 people there to see the band.

  10. Too me, the "scene" is most definately still in its infant stages (in Canada). I for one don't believe that its declining at all. If people want the scene to grow, i think the up and coming bands NEED to tour outside of Ontario and the East. Of course i may be a bit biased simply b/c i live in Calgary, but i think this is a legit arguement. I mean, does it get old playing the same places from month to month? I don't know, im seriously curious. I think the BNB did wonders for our scene b/c everyone from each coast knew who they were. They toured all over, not just in Ontario. Things need to stay fresh. For example, when Nero did their Western leg this year it seemed like it was a positive experience for them (right?). I think a combination of being in new territory and having a good booking schedule really helped of course....However, the point here is, not only did the people out West enjoy seeing them for the time(s), but the homers back in Ontario were REALLY excited to see them again, and by all accounts, they played to some raging parties. ITs all about keepin it fresh.

I would really like to read some of the muscians feelings on this matter. You folks are out there every night night GIVIN' 'ER and i want to know what you think. Are you content staying out east or do ya'll have intentions of doing bigger things and going to different places?

  11. SO its the Calgary Folk Festival...... http://www.calgaryfolkfest.com/01/html/schedule.html (for line-up)

I only went yesterday and had an amazing time. The festival brought out the best in Calgary and its people. To me, Calgary is a bit of an uncool, business-as-usual kind of a place; Lots of suits and enough big business to make you sick. This weekend was different.

Lots of good vibes, friendly people and great music. The highlight for me (and many others) last night was the performance orchestrated by Michael Franti and Spearhead. I had a chance to see him and some bandmates participate in a workshop earlier that day and was becoming very excited for what the night would bring.

As the acts on the main stage did their thing, the crowd just kind sat around, applauding where appropriate. Not to take anything from the other musicians b/c they were all VERY good. However, when Franti and company took the stage everything changed. He worked the place into a frenzy! EVERYONE was on their feet, clapping, singing, dancing and generally freaking out. Old and young alike, the folks at the folkfest were loving Spearhead.

To me, it was very refreshing to see this sort of excitement for something new. Im sure that there were some Spearhead fans present already, but after that performance, there were a lot more. Poor Harry Manx had to come on as the tweeter music and then Jesse Cook came out for the final set of the night. Poor buggers. Great musicians in their own right but just didn't come close to the energy created by Spearhead. Wow, that WAS GOOD!

  12. TOUR DATES

The dates listed below are conditional upon a safe and positive outcome of Alpine Valley. What this means is that the request for only people with tickets to come to the show has to be strictly adhered to. Failure to comply with this simple request will put these tour dates in serious jeopardy. As always your cooperation is appreciated.
