Esau Posted October 12, 2005 Report Share Posted October 12, 2005 I would look into whether it is legal to keep one here in Ontario.In the US its currently illegal to keep prairie dogs as pets due to monkeypox virus that occurs somtimes with them.I also believe there is a law pertaining to the keeping of indegious animals (I know there is with reptiles) as pets,although I'm not sure if its by province or Canada wide.I know the laws on this are screwy to say the least.**The MNR would probally be a good place to inquire about the legality of keeping such pets.This doesn't mean you can't get one from someone but it may explain why you wont find them in pet stores.** example in Ontario: You require a permit to keep a black bear,but you do not need one for an elephant.Its illegal to keep a Massasuga Rattlesnake but not a cobra.
