Location of show still uncertain

Cirque du Soleil is coming to Ottawa next spring and the only question now is: Where will the company put down its massive big top?

Spokeswoman Rachel Andrews confirmed yesterday the Montreal-based company is bringing one of its touring shows, Quidam, to the city in May for a month-long run, although she declined to disclose the location for the big-scale production. "I can't announce the site, because we're still finalizing it," she said.

When Cirque du Soleil was last here in 1998, it performed on LeBreton Flats and it's believed to be the favoured site this time, although Ms. Andrews said two other locations are being considered too.

"We'll certainly know (the site) by Nov. 16, because that's when the tickets go on sale," she said.

Tickets will be sold to Cirque du Soleil club members first, and then to the general public. Tickets are expected to be in the $70 to $90 range.

A touring production of Quidam opens in Hong Kong next Thursday, then moves to San Diego on Jan. 19, before coming to Ottawa. Quidam (pronounced key-dam) features "a headless man, a nameless passerby, a solitary figure lingering on a street corner and a person rushing past. It could be anyone, anybody. Someone coming, going, living in our anonymous society," according to the company's website. It's directed by Franco Dragone, who worked with Celine Dion on her Las Vegas show.

The show has more than 50 performers and is a combination of acrobatic artistry, technical expertise, extravagant design and a musical score featuring classical strings, synthesizers and guitars.

"It's a fascinating show and many of my Cirque colleagues say it's one of their favourite shows. People really get attached to the show," she said.

Chantal Comeau, a National Capital Commission spokeswoman, said the commission has yet to receive a formal proposal from Cirque du Soleil to use the LeBreton Flats location.

The company's last show, Saltimbanco, was staged at LeBreton in 1998 and drew more than 82,000 people during a 25-day run.
