AD
According to Canoe, the following will take place:MONTREAL (CP) - An all-star lineup will pay tribute to singer and composer Paul Simon during a free outdoor show at the Montreal International Jazz Festival on July 4, organizers announced Tuesday.Elvis Costello, Sam Roberts, Bedouin Soundclash, Kevin Parent and Daniel Lanois will be among the acts to take to the stage. The tribute to Simon takes place the day before Simon plays at a sold-out indoor show. I think I might make the trip for this show. Costello paying respects to Simon? I don't think you could go wrong there. And there's that Lanois guy. and that Roberts guy.Coooool.AD

Northern Wish
Not to mention the possibility of some sit ins at that 'sold out indoor show'.That would be awesome, I love Rhymin Simon!I think it was Jiggle the Handle that played Graceland in its entirety at Berkfest a few years back, and that was great too.Sean
Velvet
I am pretty excited about the Paul Simon show. Me and Phorbesie got box seats for it, and yes, the purchase pretty much buried my summer concert budget!
AD
Not to mention the possibility of some sit ins at that 'sold out indoor show'.I was more hoping for a Simon sit-in at the Free show, but it looks like he's playing in Cooperstown that night... Unless it's an afternoon thing for the 4th of July and he's coming to Montreal in the evening..... Fingers crossed.Nice score Velvet, I've seen him twice before and both shows I still remember like they were yesterday.EDIT: Cooperstown is an evening show. Damn.AD Edited June 7, 2006 by Guest
balogna pogna
I'm hoping that his tour for the new album eventually brings him to the Toronto area. The new album "Surprise" is actually very good but there's not too much of his solo work that I don't like. Northern Wish
I have seen him a few times but nothing compares to the 2001 show I caught with Brian Wilson opening.I went by myself (which I rarely did in those days), sober as a stick (again a rare occurence)- and danced my ass off on the lawns after leaving my sit down fifth row seat. There were moments that brought tears to my eyes, and others when I just couldn't do anything but smile smile smile. One of the most purely emotional musical experiences of my life.Magic. Northern Wish
Not messy in the wasted sense, but yes he was a social mess. I don't think he was too amped to be in front of 10,000 people. The music was great though which should be all that counts. And whether or not the comments to the crowd were on the teleprompter- he is not the only one out there using canned lines to his audience every night (see Michael Franti, Don Ross, BB King, etc etc)Unfortunately for Brian, he is a legend to everyone in the biz except himself.S

Blane
Wow! That's going to be awesome. THere were something like 90,000 people at the big free show last year (Pat Metheney) so if you want to get a good spot for the show, get there early. Other big names that will be playing for free are:June 29th: The Neville BrothersJuly 3rd: K'NaanJuly 9th: Goran Bregovic and his wedding and funeral band.If you have the chance to see Bregovic, DON"T miss it! He's absolutely amazing.

Blane
pretty good times. Some definate highs (Jaimie Cullum, Sam Roberts, Michel Rivard) and lows (Jeri Brown!) but overall a really good time. Might circulate a recording if there is interest.
jahdawg
edit to the setlist - opener was an intor narrated by Leonard Cohen - The Sound Of Silence, and the show was encored by an a capella version of Slip Sliding Away....
