Cosmic ChrisC
I'm thinking of celebrating La Saint-Jean (Québec National Holiday) this year, since it falls on Saturday! I'm franco-ontarienne, so I never really celebrate La Saint-Jean. But this year, I think I'll check out a few bands at le Parc des Cèdres in Aylmer tomorrow. Premier Ciel is playing early evening; they are a Harmonium tribute band. Harmonium was very popular in Québec in the 70s, with a folk/rock/progressive sound. Premier Ciel is doing a great job paying tribute to them. A little later in the evening, Gilles Vigneault will take the stage. Gilles is a famous poet and singer-songwriter from Québec, best known for his song "Mon pays" and his concert on August 13, 1974 in front of 130,000 spectators on the Plains of Abraham where Vigneault participated in an historic concert alongside Félix Leclerc. I had no idea Vigneault was still performing. He's 78! Check out this web site for the schedule of L'Outaouais en fête: http://www.imperatif-francais.org/dossiers/dossiers.php?id_dossier=4213 And if you don't go, then just drink some Belle Gueule. Davey Boy 2.0
the fleurs de lis flags are flying from peoples' cars (should that be «les cars des gars»?) around here in Gatineau all over the place- i think, from what i've heard, things get pretty crazy on St. John the Baptist day hereabouts- i also heard Mike'n'Sharon are settting up a SJB Day webcam from their driveway so everyone can get in on the action.(I love Belle Guelle) Edited June 23, 2006 by Guest ... and Boréale Noir of course
Cosmic ChrisC
Yeah, you can say les "chars" des gars. "Chars" is very slang though. So better yet, les voitures des gars, but for some reason, that sounds kinda boring. I like slang words. So are people in Québec off today or Monday?I'd like to be in Québec City one year on La Saint-Jean. It's as big as Canada Day in Ottawa. AD
I made the mistake of wearing a red shirt to the Aylmer St-Jean celebrations a few years ago. I am an anglo, i was with my french girlfriend (from that time). things did not go well. they asked me (in french) why are you wearing red, the colour of the federalists? .... so i reply in English... I'm Canadian.... They got mad..;. I ran.AD

I think we'll take the bus there so I can drink a lot of Molson beers.

ollie
Good times!! Harper challenges sovereigntists' claim to Fete nationale "All Canadians can share in the pride Quebecers feel for having preserved and developed their unique identity within Canada," Harper said. "Quebec pride is not the enemy or disavowal of Canadian patriotism."
Dr_Evil_Mouse
Nice try, Harper . On another note, I recently learned that "jamming" translates as "faire le boeuf" (this may be a more continental than Quebecquois expression). My vegetarian conscience is still wrestling with this.
