Shoreline Festival – July 21, 22, 23, 2006 – Rollo Bay, PEI

From Dave C:

Hey folks,

We’ve been keeping very busy, working hard to ensure you have a great time in Rollo Bay, PEI with us on July 21, 22, and 23. I have decided to leave our Tier 1 tickets -- $76.50 + tax -- at all of our retail outlets and online at our website through July 1, as the response has been tremendous. After July 1, tickets will indeed increase -- to $93.50 + tax -- as has been specified on our website for a while now. Tickets were originally slated to increase on June 21.

Thanks to all of you who have helped us double our ticket sales as compared to these same dates last year! Bravo to you all! We are very flattered, as our promo hasn’t even hit the streets yet. That will change this week, as our posters and flyers make their debut for the year. The website is also being updated with this year’s finished motif. It all looks great, and I’m sure you’ll find the website even more informative than ever before.

I am happy to announce that Aliant Mobility has come on board for Shoreline 2006. Thanks to Aliant, we have a newspaper advertising campaign kicking off presently, as they are including Shoreline in all of their Aliant Mobility advertising between now and the show. And that is just for starters! We can’t thank Aliant enough for helping spread the word about Shoreline! Other sponsors will be announced soon.

We have some splendid new additions to announce this summer. A sneak peek - we will be offering windsurfing on site, and cycling and kayaking tours are now available to Shoreline guests who are up for a little adventure. Or maybe you’d rather chill at the beach on site and take a swim in Rollo Bay. Don’t forget about all those great permanent facilities for your comfort on site as well – real bathrooms, real showers, real people keepin’ em’ clean. Plus 65 smooth rolling acres of the greenest grass you will ever see, full service campsites for vans and RV’s, a huge shelter – Ceilidh Hall -- to keep you cool, and one nicely proportioned natural amphitheater to take it all in from. There’s lots to do in the local area too, and we’ll catch you up to speed with it all.

A few other tricks I will keep up my sleeve until the website is runnin’ at full speed. Watch this week for more updates about all the fun in store at this year’s Shoreline Festival, including the performance schedule, an FAQ for all of those curious folks, and information for vendors and volunteers.

Best wishes,

Dave Christian

Producer, Presidente, and all around Head Honcho,

- In 2005, hit single “Feel Good Inc.,†composed and performed by Gorillaz and De La Soul, won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Collaboration. The funk laced track was also named the Best Single of 2005 by Spin Magazine (Jan 2006).

- De La Soul hit the stage with Gorillaz for the opening performance of the 2005 Grammy Awards broadcast. The long list of recent live shows also includes the famed Prince Charles Trust in London and Bonnaroo in Tennessee, as well as tours with John Legend and Common. This summer’s headlining sets include The Southern Comfort Music Festival in Georgia alongside The Flaming Lips.

-2004’s “The Grind Date†is De La Soul’s 9th major label full length album. Released on Beyonce’s dad Matthew Knowles’ label Sanctuary Urban, it features cameos from MF Doom, Sean Paul, Common, Ghostface (Wu Tang Clan) and movie director Spike Lee among others. The album was produced by the likes of Madlib, 9th Wonder, Supa Dave West and J-Dilla.

- “3 Feet High and Rising,†De La Soul’s debut album, was named #7 on Spin Magazine’s list of Ten Greatest Albums 1985 - 2005. The only two other hip hop albums on Spin’s list are Public Enemy’s masterpiece “Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back,†and Dr. Dre & Ice Cube’s N.W.A calling card “Straight Outta Compton.†Also given top honors: Radiohead, Nirvana, Prince, The Smiths, The Pixies, Pavement, and PJ Harvey.

Spin Magazine -Ten Greatest Albums 1985-2005

1. Radiohead - OK Computer

2. Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back

3. Nirvana - Nevermind

4. Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted

5. The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

6. Pixies - Surfer Rosa

7. De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising

8. Prince - Sign 'O' the Times

9. PJ Harvey - Rid of Me

10. NWA - Straight Outta Compton

- The guest list from De La Soul’s discography is a who’s who of alternative hip hop, and brims with contemporaries and admirers like Black Thought (The Roots), Redman, Mike D and Ad-Rock (Beastie Boys), Mos Def, Common, Busta Rhymes, and Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest).

- “3 Feet High and Rising†is #345 in Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Albums of All Time. Here’s the list of albums ranked between #340 and #350:

(340). Black Flag - Damaged

(341). Moby - Play

(342). Depeche Mode - Violator

(343). Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell

(344). Lou Reed - Berlin

(345). De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising

(346). Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

(347). Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn

(348). Muddy Waters - At Newport

(349). The Yardbirds - Roger the Engineer

- De La Soul are charter members of Spitkickers.com, an online collective that is also home to performers such as Kanye West, Dave Chapelle, Blackstar, MF Doom, Phife, Jean Grae, Michael Rappaport, Talib Kweli and NHL hockey player Anson Carter. Spitkicker is all about community:

“Spitkicker will set trends, unify cultures, and create positive standards for communities. Mission: to create a movement that exemplifies excellence in entertainment, our artists, and empowering people and communities globally.†(www.spitkickers.com).

-In June 2000 the Spitkicker Tour was created. It was a 32 city U.S. tour of alternative hip hop acts featuring De La Soul, Common, Talib Kweli, Pharoah Monke, and Biz Markie. With sellout crowds and virtuoso performances, it became a smashing success and was placed in the esteemed category of tours like Up in Smoke, Hard Knock Life, and Lollapalooza. As MTV put it, The Spitkicker Tour was “ ... a traveling hip-hop family jam, welcoming local friends onstage for extended free-form sets filled with on-the-spot collaborations and all-around good love for one another as well as for all who flocked to witness it go down in their town.†(July, 2000).

- De La Soul are cultural icons in the United States and around the world. Their 18 year career is an almost unequaled accomplishment in hip hop, leaving critics to marvel at their constant reinvention while “... many observers wondered when their DiMaggio-like fresh streak would die.†(Pitchfork, Oct 2004). Advertising campaigns for hip American companies like Apple Computers and Levi’s Jeans are a testimonial to De La’s vast appeal beyond their credibility with music peers and fans.

- De La Soul were founding members of the famous New York hip hop posse “The Native Tongues,†which also included A Tribe Called Quest and Queen Latifah.

Press:

De La has never been better, their godfather status leaving them with nothing to prove, little to dis, and one of the best live shows in hip-hop.

- Pitchfork - Live Review - Miami, USA, Aug 8 2005

As this standout collection of songs shows, with its astounding lyrical acumen and stellar beats, De La Soul surely ranks among the best rap groups of all time.

- Los Angeles Times on “The Grind Date,†Oct 24 2004

DJ Mase saved a few lives this night, providing a souped-up soundtrack of mostly old-school hip-hop and working the crowd like a seasoned vet.

... Not surprisingly, by the time Posdnuos and Trugoy bounded onto the stage, the audience was spring-loaded, tightly wound and ready for the call-and-response ritual that's been a hallmark of the group's shows since its D.A.I.S.Y. Age.

- Rolling Stone - Live Review - Athens, USA, April 1997

They were just waiting for the right time to kick precisely the right rhyme, so that "The Grind Date" would go down not just as an important date in rap history but in the pantheon of all musical endeavours since the dawn of mankind. It's that damn good.

- Rap Reviews.com on “The Grind Date,†Oct 2004

Each of these twelve songs could plausibly be your favorite, or you could just pick one for every month of the year.

- Stylus Magazine on “The Grind Date,†Dec 8 2004

The Grind Date brings together an unimaginable team of the underground's hottest producers and meshes their idiosyncrasies without dissidence.

- Pitchfork on “The Grind Date,†Oct 8 2004

... a superbly sequenced set chock-full of clever entendres, oozing with existentialisms on par with those of Buhloone Mindstate and De La Soul Is Dead. - Village Voice on “The Grind Date,†Nov 8 2004

Their jabs cut and the beats burn.

- Spin on “The Grind Date,†Nov 2004

Track-for-track, the production on this album is the best of the year-to-date: rather than settle for mediocre tracks from du jour producers such as Kanye or the Neptunes, De La Soul still count on Pasemaster Mase, with a little help from J-Dilla and Madlib, and with good reason. From the Yes sample in the title track to the sinister hook of "Rock Co.Kane Flow," there is no track on this album that doesn't get one's head bobbing. As for the rhymes, Pos and Dave still feature the old-school deliveries that have carried them through for 16 years in an industry where the shelf-life tends to be much shorter ...â€

- Tiny Mix Tapes on “The Grind Date,†Nov 2004

De La Soul on performing live:

MTV features have focused on De La’s live show over the years. Here are some of their comments about playing live shows to MTV.

Dave / Trugoy - “... we want ya'll to get into it, and that's what De La is about. We're bringing ourselves to you, and hopefully we'll get it in return.â€

Mase - “...it's something we kind of look forward to doing, especially with the fans supporting us all these years and anticipating all these songs so we kind of look forward to a good show.â€

Pos’ - “Cause we love to put on a good show. If the club, theatre, wherever we're performing will let us, we'll perform for hours ... “

Dave - “... you gotta love hip-hop and why we do it. We're here just to make good music [and] have people have a good time.â€

-Xavier Rudd played Bonnaroo in Tennessee - one of the largest festivals in the world - in 2004 and 2005, last year along with fellow Shoreline Festival 2006 headliners De La Soul. His Bonnaroo debut in 2004 was so well received that “Solace†became the best selling album of the event - outselling superstars on the bill such as Bob Dylan, Wilco, Dave Matthews, The Dead, Primus, David Byrne, and Trey Anastatio.

-Artists Xavier Rudd has toured with include Ani Difranco, Michael Franti, String Cheese Incident, moe., G-Love and Jack Johnson.

-Xavier Rudd has performed at the largest festivals around the world. He will make stops this summer at Europe’s largest shows, including Metropolis Festival in Rotterdam, Holland, and Oxegen Festival in Dublin, Ireland. Xavier is touring North America and Europe to promote his new album “Food in the Belly,†having just completed 13 sold out Canadian soft seater dates.

-Just a few of the acts Xavier will be playing with in summer 2006:

Kanye West, Ben Harper, The Who, Trey Anastasio & Mike Gordon w. Benevento/Russo Duo, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Depeche Mode, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Black Eyed Peas, The Black Crowes, Manu Chao, Franz Ferdinand, Massive Attack, The Strokes, Ween, James Brown, Arctic Monkeys, Death Cab for Cutie, The Wailers, and Robert Plant.

-Xavier Rudd has appeared at some of the best festivals in Canada, such as Ottawa Bluesfest and Calgary Folk Festival. Shoreline will be his first ever performance in Atlantic Canada, coming on the heels of a show at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom.

-â€Food in the Belly†was recorded in Vancouver with Canadian producer Todd Simko (formerly of Pure). The album also features The Vancouver Children’s Choir, Neil Golden on tabla, Harry Manx on veena, Beth Preston on vocals, Dave Tolley on snare drum, Panos Grames on B3 organ, Brad Murihead on tuba, Todd Simko on banjo and whistle and Edgar Diaz on djembe.

-Xavier Rudd was born in Canada, but grew up in Victoria, Australia. He is an experienced surfer, and board culture was among the first places his music found an audience.

-In 2004, ABC (Australia) gave Xavier his own radio special, “Xavier Rudd Radio.†He took the opportunity to focus on Australian Aboriginal music and Australian up and comers.

Press:

Surrounded by a collection of instruments including three didgeridoos in different keys, a drum kit, gong and a collection of string and percussion pieces, Xavier was obviously preaching to the converted, even if this is his first UK tour.

- BBC - Live Review -Manchester, UK, 9/10, April 19, 2006

Watching Rudd perform, there is a radiance that has proven to immediately win fans over. Incidentally, his solo set at the 2004 Bonnaroo Festival was one of the weekend’s most buzzed about sets, as his independently released album Solace, was the events’ best seller.

- Glide Magazine, March 11, 2005

Similar musical contemporaries are Ben Harper, Michael Franti and Jack Johnson, influences include, Paul Simon ... Mickey Hart and Sting. There is however one distinct difference, he does it ALL himself. He is Xavier Rudd, the singer, songwriter, performer and band.

- Incendiary Magazine - Live Review - Amsterdam, Holland, Mar 28 2006

Food In The Belly sees the loveable roots/groove/blues creator continue to deliver earthy tunes and energetic beats…following the faultless Solace, Rudd still displays his optimism and straight to the point view of life."

- X-Press Magazine on “Food in the Bellyâ€

Xavier Rudd is a 27-year-old Australian who offers a strikingly original mix of music... Rudd has a haunting voice that can build some funky moments, but mostly he dispenses a soothing calm... Expect this album to crack some top 10 lists this year.

- Boston Globe on “Food in the Bellyâ€

Despite performing without accompaniment, Rudd is able to layer sounds by utilizing four limbs and a mouth to create seemingly orchestral tapestries of sonic complexity.

- Knight-Rider

Rudd sings earnest, spirit-lifting hippy/poetic refrains that harkens stylistically to John Mayer, Damien Rice, Jack Johnson ... The cumulative effect is extremely fresh and captivating.

- Philidelphia Daily News

His music roots rock with reggae undertones, a tribal urgency and a world beat

sophistication, and it's well-captured on his excellent new album, "Solace."

- Patriot Star Ledger on “Solaceâ€

Xavier Rudd divides his time between homes on Australia's Southern Victoria coast and beautiful Western Canada, so you know what? The last thing he needs is a kind word from us. (His album, Solace, is as relaxed and mellow as one might expect.)

- Time Out New York on “Solaceâ€

Singer-songwriter Xavier Rudd leans more to the mellow side of folk, but he dabbles with danceable island-like rhythms underneath a blanket of intricate lyrics."

The New Deal

Toronto, Ontario

TheNewDeal2.jpg

-The New Deal have shared the stage with some of the most respected musical groups in the world, including The Roots, Outkast, Moby, Phish member Page McConnell, jazz legend Herbie Hancock and a host of others.

- The New Deal have appeared at some of the largest festivals in the world, including Bonnaroo, Jazz Fest New Orleans, Coachella, Street Scene in San Diego, Austin City Limits Festival, and Detroit Electronic Music Festival.

-In 2003, they were nominated for a Juno for “Best Alternative Record of the Yearâ€; and won the 2002 Canadian Urban Music Award for “Best Electronic Artistâ€.

Press

These are indeed songs for a future generation.

- Billboard

Their sound is pure dance-floor bliss for beat junkies.

- LA Times

Gales of beats... creating a sonic shitstorm that steamrolls everything in its path.

- NOW Magazine, Toronto

... more varied, more musical and much more interesting than anything Phish has ever done.

- CBC Radio “Bandwidthâ€

“Crowd interaction, spontaneity--we're able to change our sound on a dime to really emulate the vibe of the room. We can chill out, or bring it down to half-time, or build it up very quickly."

- Darren Shearer in the Montreal Mirror

Using a complex system of hand signals and other non-verbal cues, they "spin" sets, often drumming out of the opening DJ’s last record and letting each song mix seamlessly into the next — sometimes building to 25-minute monster breakdowns, other times including snippets of, say, Bon Jovi’s "Livin’ On a Prayerâ€. “We’re progressive in that it is completely with live instruments, no samplers, no sequencers — we’ve said the line a million times. It’s just what we do," explains Darren (Shearer) for the millionth time.

I agree. The first time I saw him was at moe.down in 2003; I didn't even know who he was, but he did a mid-afternoon main stage set, and blew me away. In 2004 at the Ottawa Blues Fest, his side stage show again floored me. His main stage show the next day, though, was pretty much exactly the same, and you could feel the staleness start to creep in. A headline show at Barrymore's later in the year left me in kind of "Meh" mode.

Aloha,

Brad
