a huge shelter – Ceilidh Hall

I do not recall a sheltered "hall" from last year...where exactly is this? All I remember is that funny little stage for the fiddle festival, but that was tiny.

The Hall, The Barn (as I have heard it referred to in other fourms) Where the late night stage was...BNB, Skratch, AOG, all played in the Hall. It was right beside the main stage.

Review of a recent De La show in TO.

I can't wait for this, let the summer begin.

De La delightful

Dukes of Daisy Age hiphop tear up Harbourfront Centre

By JASON RICHARDS

NNNN

Posdnous randomly plugged his upcoming b-day - "I'll be 38 in September!" - and the crowd went crazy like Gnarls, and then some. Then he teased that Maseo 's pushing 43 (he's not), and once again the cheers threatened to violate the strict noise ordinance in effect at the perfectly breezy Harbourfront Centre outdoor stage.

While the bearded, bald-pated Pos's MCing was candid and funny, I think subconsciously the sardine-packed crowd was cheering for what De La's ages signify. See, all these new rappers run their mouths for miles about how much money, bitches and guns they've got and how much crack they deal. But who can verify?

Today, the most credible stock in hiphop is history, and few touring groups can stake more of a claim to it than De La.

His group (minus Trugoy , who was ill in the medical sense) is up to its neck in hits dating back to when The Source was a yellow one-page flyer. Last Friday they popped a bottle of some old-school energy and slew a near 90-minute spectacular.

Most notably, they ran through a bangin' Buddy, mauled the bass line of Me Myself And I and vibrated on Stakes Is High. Party people passed the puff during Potholes In My Lawn; Prince Paul would have been proud.

During the interactive show, Pos and Maseo did lots of effective "this side of the crowd is more live" stuff. Impressively, the Long Islanders seamlessly wove the word "Toronto" into so many lyrics, they repped our city hard without pandering.

Despite Maseo's clear disbelief that anyone bought their 2004 album The Grind Date, people blacked out to that record's gem, Rock Co. Kane Flow. Whenever MF Doom's prepackaged beats broke down, everyone froze for extended periods to mounting crowd screams. AOI singles Oooh and All Good also maintained the heat.

And while I've said in the past that I can't stand this played-out live hiphop bit, De La invited "da ladies" onstage to dance during their encore. But this time it struck a tone that was fun and inclusive instead of the usual gross. The difference? Their rhymes on Baby Phat were actually positive. the end

Joel-Plaskett-Emergency.jpg

Joel Plaskett EmergencyHalifax, Nova Scotia

Joel Plaskett recently won two 2006 ECMAs; for Male Artist Of The Year for his album La De Da and Songwriter Of The Year for his song Happen Now. He was nominated for a 2006 Juno -- alongside Neil Young and Ron Sexsmith -- in the Songwriter of the Year category.

-Loved in Halifax, he was recognized by Coast Magazine's 2005 Best of Halifax Music awards, as Best National Male Artist, Best Local Male Artist, and Best Local Album of 2005 for La De Da. The Music Industry Association of Nova Scotia has hurled accolades his way; in 2004 he won three MIANS awards, Alternative Artist, Entertainer and Group of the Year. He also produces fellow Shoreline performers Two Hours Traffic.

-Joel Plasketts La De Da was #2 on Chart Magazines Top 100 Albums of 2005 (January 06). Other artists in the top ten on that list were: The New Pornographers, Caribou, Stars, Sufjan Stevens, Black Mountain, Bloc Party, Wolf Parade, Hot Hot Heat, and Spoon.

-2006 brought the DVD Make a Little Noise. It features live songs from a show at the Marquee Club in Halifax and from shows on his solo tour. The DVD also compiles all 10 of his music videos together for the first time. Released along side the DVD are three new songs on a separate CD.

-La De Da has kept Joel Plaskett busy. The resulting solo tour of Canada was a virtual sellout, including three shows at Toronto's premiere singer/songwriters venue, Hughs Room and a triumphant tour-ending concert at The Rebecca Cohn auditorium in Halifax for 1000 rabid hometown fans. He also toured in the US and the UK both solo and with the band.

-La De Da was released in Australia on the 6th of March 2006 by Code One Entertainment. In April 2006, Joel toured the east coast of Australia -- in solo mode -- extensively to promote the release.

-Plaskett played with an Australian icon of sorts while in the country, actor Russell Crowe. The gig with Russell Crowe was chatty but at least the talking heads had different accents, Plaskett blogged.

-He has released two solo albums and two albums with The Joel Plaskett Emergency, Solo effort In Need of Medical Attention came in 1999, and in 2001 Down at the Khyber featured the full on Emergency. 2003 brought Truthfully Truthfully, again with the band. His latest solo effort was 2005s La De Da.

-Recently, Joel Plaskett has appeared on the CBC documentary Rock Camp, as one of the rock coaches.

-While still in high school in 1992, Joel helped form the legendary Halifax alt rock band Thrush Hermit with Rob Benvie (vocals, guitar), Ian McGettigan (vocals, bass), and Michael Catano (drums). Joel Plaskett was the lead singer and guitarist, as well as the band's primary songwriter, until their breakup in late 1999.

..the show was still a demonstration of all that is glorious about Canadian rock. -- Chartattack.com Live Review

The fundamentals of East Coast cool as it applies to a Joel Plaskett gig are as follows: Dressing down is hip. So is singing along. When the lanky rock singer-songwriter tells self-deprecating stories between sets, whooping is encouraged. For an encore, just bang your beer glass on the table.

- The Globe and Mail

There's no question that Plaskett's one of the only members of the city's once-buzzing indie stable who stuck around. It's a theme that pops up often on his excellent new disc, Truthfully Truthfully, a record, like The Weakerthans' Left and Leaving, that inextricably ties the songwriter to his home, and ponders what the hell happened to everyone else.

- Eye Magazine

I like the fact that maybe when Neil Young looks at the category he'll hear my name once in his life. He'll scratch his head and go "I wonder who that is," adds Plaskett with a laugh.

- Plaskett discusses his Juno nomination on CTV.

Matt Mays and El Torpedo

Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

-Matt Mays and El Torpedo played nine dates with The Black Crowes in 2006, on a cross-Canada tour. This is the second Shoreline Festival for Matt Mays and El Torpedo. They also performed in 2004.

-The award winning album Matt Mays and El Torpedo was produced with Grammy award winner Don Smith, who has worked with Tom Petty, U2, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, and The Traveling Wilburys. "He was all about the vibe we had," says Mays of the famed producer. "If a take had a lot of mojo and some mistakes, wed keep that one over a perfect take."

-This year alone, Matt Mays and El Torpedo have also toured with Blue Rodeo and Sam Roberts along with headlining their own cross-country tour.

-Matt Mays & El Torpedo were included in Chart Magazines Best of the Best 2005 - highlighting 10 bands that stood out in Canadian music. Also included were Death From Above 1979, Broken Social Scene, New Pornographers, Caribou, Nickleback, Silverstein, KNaan, Wolf Parade, and Black Mountain.

-Matt Mays and El Torpedo walked away from the 2006 ECMAs in Charlottetown this year with an armful of trophies. Cocaine Cowgirl won Single of the Year, and their sophomore album Matt Mays and El Torpedo was named Best Rock Recording and Best Album. Nominated in five categories, the group won four awards.

-Other shows for the band this summer include the Calgary Stampede, and Ottawa Bluesfest. Matt Mays took part in the North By North East Concert Series - White Ribbon Concert, a benefit to raise money to fight violence against women. That lineup also included Ron Sexsmith, Jim Cuddy, Bruce Cockburn, Alex Lifeson, and Sarah Slean.

Press:

One dazzling set and you're a convert - that's how it works.

This is loud, raunchy rock 'n' roll played strictly for feel in a ragged-but-right way that recalls Neil Young's classic early work with Crazy Horse.

- NOW Toronto

one of Canadas most exciting live rock acts.

I cant even find the words to describe his genuine, gorgeous songcraft and the bands killer live performance.

The_Sadies.jpg

The Sadies

Toronto, Ontario

-The Sadies -- Mike Belitsky on drums, guitar and vocals, Sean Dean on bass, Dallas Good on vocals and guitar and Travis Good on vocals, guitar and fiddle -- have five studio albums under their belts. Precious Moments was released in 1998, Pure Diamond Gold in 1999, Red Dirt in 2000, Tremendous Efforts in 2001, and Stories Often Told in 2002.

-Sadies Fest -- a star-studded of celebration The Sadies music -- was taped live over two nights at Lees Palace in Toronto during Feb. 2006. Artists who joined the band to cover a Sadies tune include: Garth Hudson (The Band), Jon Spencer, Matt Verta-Ray, Neko Case, Jayhawks singer Gary Louris, Blue Rodeo 's Greg Keelor and Jim Cuddy, Rick White and Jon Langford.

-Other shows for The Sadies this summer include two shows at Winnipeg Folk Festival, Hillside Festival in Guelph, Ontario, and Ottawa Folk Festival.

-Also noted in the Canadian music community for their hockey prowess, The Sadies rhythm section has been described as speedy by Exclaim! Magazine. Mike Belitsky from The Sadies plays for a rec team in Halifax known as the Halifax-Dartmouth Ferries.

Press

It's a track like this, amid the ringing guitars and heady harmonies of the vocal numbers, that reminds you just how good, technically speaking, The Sadies are as players. The UK's Guardian, in a recent live review, was moved to describe the band as follows: "There is something decidedly strange and artful about their breathless conflation of classic country, surf rock and psychedelia.

- Muchmusic.com

Luckily, we've got a little band in Toronto called the Sadies who, for two nights of live recording at Lee's , were able to pull together (and this is with as little hyperbole as possible) a straight-up impressive and varied roster of talent to help 'em out through a marathon celebration of their music.

- NOW Toronto

For now, the Sadies are in road-warrior mode and smoky, sweaty shows with an inch of beer on the floor are the order of the day. But first, Travis has some business to attend to. Its deer hunting season, and whenever I hear a shot go off, I like to go out to the trailer where we practice and play the drums as loud as I can.

Jason Collett

Toronto, Ontario

-- Jason Collett is the host of the influential Radio Mondays song writing night in Toronto, which has been joined at times by all of the Arts and Crafts music roster, plus The Weakerthans, Kathleen Edwards, Catherine MacLellan and Hayden.

-- Collett was asked to join Broken Social Scene after their breakthrough album You Forgot It In People, but he was a solo artist first and never stopped writing his own tunes. "My stuff is based around songs and the Social Scene thing is based around busting songs wide open," he says. "My thing is more schooled."

-- Collett album guest spots include: Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Andrew Whiteman (Apostle of Hustle) and Charles Spearin (Do Make Say Think); Leslie Feist; Andrew Cash; Chris Brown; pedal steel player Bob Egan (Blue Rodeo); violinist Julie Penner; Stars' Evan Cranley and Amy Millan; and Metric's James Shaw and Emily Haines, the latter lending her inimitable vocals to the road-song duet "Hangover Days.

-- Collett is touring the United States for the month of June, including dates with Feist -- in New York City as a part of the Central Park NYC Summerstage series -- and with Calexico in Chicago. He is playing the Ottawa Bluesfest before making his way to PEI for The Shoreline Festival. Other festival dates for 2006 include Canada Day festivities in Toronto, Hillside Music Festival in Guelph, Ontario and the Edmonton Folk Festival. He has played tours with Metric and The Stills.

-- Jason Collett has two solo albums, 2005s Idols of Exile and 2003s Motor Motel Love Songs. Motor Motel Love Songs was a compilation of songs he had previously written, and Idols is entirely new material.

-- Jason Collett briefly led the alt- country band Bird, with Andrew Cash and Hawksley Workman, managing a single, self-released record of his songs called Chrome Reflection. In 2001, he also independently released the Bitter Beauty LP, these two works holding the body of Motel Motor Love Songs.

Press

Colletts confidence is growing... thanks to his new, knockout collection of pop/rock sings featuring perceptive Dylanesque lyrics.

- MacLeans on Idols of Exile

An eminently listenable and brilliantly summery album. Chalk up another solo triumph to add to the already growing Broken Social Scene masterpiece.

- Exclaim! on Idols of Exile

Near perfect roots rock songs that find their core in the finely sketched details of the everyday.

- 4 1/2 stars -- Eye Weekly

The hunky one from Broken Social Scene proves he is quite obviously a brilliant musician in his own right.

- National Post on Motor Motel Love Songs

Collett plays admirable summer folk rock that is reminiscent of Wilco, The Verve and Springsteen all put together.

- Chart Magazine on Motor Motel Love Songs.

Collett's new album Idols Of Exile is forcing him to step into the limelight. The collection of easygoing little pure-pop and alt-country jewels is just too good to be viewed as a side project.

Theyve created this huge void that indie rock has filled and Im really proud to be a part of it. We dont overhype our shit and we have a really genuine relationship with the people that follow the bands.

- Collett in FFWD Weekly, Calgary

Collett has culled the best tracks from a handful of earlier self-released discs, resulting in an album of top-drawer songs that rock quietly (as on the excellent Choke Cherry, with its sing-along chorus) and breathe small, perfect sentiments of love, with nary a dull spot in the lot.

Shoreline Underground Round Fulcrum: Sunday, 11AM, Stage

That's right folks. I've changed the name of the Shoreline Environmental Round Table, so it can have a cool acronym. We all know, acronymns put asses in the seats, and that's what we're all about here at the Round Fulcrum, pardon me, S.U.R.F.

Our line-up inside of a line-up is killer. We have a great mix of panelists who get shit done. Smart people are going to tell us exactly how fucked the world is going to get, and hopefully we're all going to learn some cool shit we can do to help save it. It's mad science, AND it comes right after yoga, AND if you e-mail me a question I'll make you a mix CD, and it'll be good.

Check it out: http://www.shorelinefestival.com/info.asp

environment@shorelinefestival.com

e-mail me a question or concern you have about the environment on PEI, in the maritimes, across Canada, or around the world.....fuck it, even if it's about space we'll see if we can get an answer for you.

S.U.R.F.'s up in '06. Catch the Wave!

Hope to see you Sunday morning, 11 AM, main stage.

Dr. Paradise

Moderator

Shoreline Underground Round Fulcrum

Below are the panelist. If you go to the shoreline site, you can read more about each one.

Panelists

Dr. Irene Novaczek

Dr. Irene Novaczek is the Director of the Island Studies Institute at UPEI, and a vocal member of the Prince Edward Island environmental community. Her primary work has been in fisheries. She is a scientific advisor to Save Our Seas and Shores, a coalition of fishers, tourism operators, First Nations, and other concerned citizens fighting to protect inshore fishing grounds from the impacts of oil and gas exploration. Recently she raised concerns over the dredging of the Charlottetown Harbor , a plan that has since been pulled back for re-evaluation. Dr. Novaczek's involvement helped to save the Harbor from large amounts of PCB's, heavy metals, and petroleum byproducts. She has always worked to make a difference in her community, be it abroad, or on Prince Edward Island.

Jackie Waddell

Jackie Waddell is the Executive Director of the Prince Edward Island Nature Trust. The Island Nature Trust was the first organization of its type in Canada. It is a non-government, not-for-profit group dedicated to the protection and management of natural areas on Prince Edward Island. They acquire lands to be held in trust for future generations, manage these lands as an example of appropriate and sustained use, and help private owners voluntarily protect their lands. They also work with endangered species and conduct research in an effort to preserve the nature of Prince Edward Island.

David Ling

David Ling is widely regarded as Prince Edward Island 's first major organic farmer. In 1985, Fair Acre Farms was an award winning operation in Winsloe, P.E.I., but Ling still had the foresight to see the harm in using chemicals on the land. He committed himself to the arduous process of detoxifying his soil and today stands proudly amongst his organic beef and produce at the Charlottetown Farmer's Market. Shoreline producer David Christian proclaims Ling's as, “The best damn steak in the whole wide world.â€

Sharon Labchuk

Sharon Labchuk is a well known advocate of the Prince Edward Island environment. She strives to eliminate the use of industrial and cosmetic pesticides on Prince Edward Island, as part of advocacy group Earth Action. In 2004 she ran for a seat in the Canadian House of Commons. Following the election she took on the position of Environmental Critic in the federal GPC shadow cabinet. Recently she has been instrumental in establishing the provincial Green Party on Prince Edward Island.

Don Mazer

Don Mazer is a steering member of the Environmental Coalition of Prince Edward Island. ECOPEI was created in 1988 as a community based action group centering on education and advocacy. They provide an environmental resource library to the public, manage public land as part of the MacPhail Homestead Project, and were a force behind the establishment of public transit in the Island's capital city.. In 2005, Don retired from teaching at the University of Prince Edward Island after thirty-three years. Courses Don taught on campus included environmental studies, and ecopsychology, the latter postulates the intrinsic connection between people and the land they live on.

Took a nice drive out to the shoreline festival site last night!!! there was a little fiddle fest still going. man we have the best festival grounds in canada. its unreal to walk around there. 35 years of festival vibes trapped between the lush grass and a beautiful sky filled with stars.

I'm ready for the best weekend of the summer!!!

are you?

The weather was not the issue...

It was supposed to rain today, but people who were there said that there must have been another reason for the cancellation of the third day. There is talk that they didn't have enough cash for insurance for the third day (which they must have known before the festival started)

People are pissed off and want compensation (I don't blame them)
