Canada's Polaris Music Prize

I think this is a great idea. I am torn as to who I would vote for. Right now K'Naan and the Deadly Snakes are at the top of my list among these nominees, but pretty much all those albums except Sarah Harmer, Cadence Weapon and Final Fantasy tickly my fancy.

Here is a story about the newly created prize.

Broken Social Scene, Sarah Harmer and K'naan are among the nominees for Canada's newest music prize.

The 10 finalists for the inaugural Polaris Music Prize, which honours the year's best full-length Canadian album, were announced Tuesday by organizers.

The award, worth $20,000, is inspired by the U.K.'s famed Mercury Prize.

Steve Jordan, executive director of the prize and a former music industry insider, praised the list as "particularly diverse and eclectic.

"The quality of this shortlist is a tribute to our jury's musical expertise and a testament to how rich and varied the music scene is in this country," he said in a statement.

The nominees are:

* Broken Social Scene for Broken Social Scene.

* Cadence Weapon for Breaking Kayfabe.

* The Deadly Snakes for Porcella.

* Final Fantasy for He Poos Clouds.

* Sarah Harmer for I'm A Mountain.

* K'naan for The Dusty Foot Philosopher.

* Malajube for Trompe L'oeil.

* Metric for Live It Out.

* The New Pornographers for Twin Cinema.

* Wolf Parade for Apologies to the Queen Mary.

The finalists were drawn from submissions by more than 120 music journalists, reviewers and broadcasters across Canada.

All forms of contemporary music — including but not limited to pop, rock, hip hop electronic, jazz, classical, country and blues — are eligible. However, compilations of previously released material, including remixes, are not eligible.

Fans will get a chance to hear from each nominee when a 10-track compilation album featuring their music hits stores Aug. 22.

A gala concert and ceremony will follow on Sept. 18, when the winner of the first Polaris Music Prize is announced from the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto.

I admit to only knowing a handful on the list but that doesn't make it easier to choose one. Hving said that, cranking up Metric to eleven on a Sunday afternoon is a most life-affirming experience, so best of luck to them!

But my, isn't Sarah Harmer's entry just a treat too?

And then there's BSS...... my head hurts!

hey marco, (disclaimer: not a challenge), what's the deal with live it out? i have it, have tried numerous times to get into it, but simply cant. curious what does it for you.

im big on the bss record, but can also see why some people might not be into it so much.. it can be pretty abrasive at times.. but that's one of the qualities i love about it.

i still love porcella for all the rock'n'soul it kicks down - it's smooth and slinky with its balls out and bustin'.

Malajube, BSS, Metric and The New Pornographers are all playing the Ottawa Bluesfest this year if anyone around here would like to check them out.

K'Naan was here on the weekend. Wolf Parade on August 4 at Barrymores. And the Deadly Snakes just don't tour enough.

I dunno, exactly. Why do people like one thing and not another? It's hard to say.

I would say most importantly there's some great songs on here. Also, the production of this album is wonderful - at once in-your-face and otherwordly, a very "druggy" mix to it. My speakers love when I play this CD.

What can I say: the sound of Emily Haines' voice flying out of my speakers really loud with those crunchy, smell-my-big-balls guitars creeping up behind her get me every time. Makes me forget how desperately I want to puch Booche oh God I want that so bad!

cool - i guess i just wanted a frame of reference for when i put it on again... somethin to say, ok, what is it about this, here... you know? everyone's gonna hear everything different, but sometimes you catch something you wouldnt have if you know what someone else is onto.

Out of that list I only really know BSS, New Pornographers, and Wolf Parade. I am completely stuck on Wolf Parade right now, so I'll guess I'll break the ice and give my vote to them even though I have not heard the other albums.

If we can't vote on who wins the actual prize(right?), it would be cool if we had our own poll.

I'm not sure who I'd vote for.. I know the BSS album better than the others, but I'm check out the ones I don't know. (K'Naan, Wolf Parade, Malajube, Cadence Weapon, the new FF).. I haevn't heard this Metric album, but Metric has never done anything for me.

I think that BSS would win hands-down on this message board. Mainly because that's the band that gets the most exposure around here.

I wouldn't vote for them (BSS)... I don't think 'BSS' the album is that good really, I keep loving them because of the live shows really... As far as albums go I'm still stuck on the Deadly Snakes in first, and 2nd is a tie between K'Naan and Wolf Parade. K'Naan's disc is damn good, a really different and organic / truthful take on hip-hop, but there is one or too super annoying tracks that shouldn't be on the disc, IMO. Wolf Parade's disc is awesome from start to finish, standout track for me is Same Ghost Every Night, especially the coda. Awesome.
