The Village Vanguard should also be checked out. I was NYC for a couple of days in 2003, and (after seeing an ad for the show in Tower Records) caught Bill Frisell Trio there.

Aloha,

Brad

Looks like its the Teddy Charles Quintet doing a residency while I'm in town.

I think exploring Grenwich (sp) Village will be just about all I get around to doing on this stealth visit to NYC. Hoping to find a hostel in that area of town. (And hoping that getting up to Colombia from there is easy to do)

Shows at the VV often have a minimum drink order, on top of the ticket price. When I saw Frisell, I could have stayed for a second set without paying cover again, but with a second two-drink minimum.

Aloha,

Brad

If you want to stay in the Lower East Village (great area) - - a lot of bands I know stay at this place: http://offsoho.com/

Cheap and accomodates a bunch of people. Not the nicest place in the world but not completely disgusting.

There's an awesome restaurant called Freeman's just down the alley from this place too: http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/freemans01/

You're just a few blocks away from a lot of the great little venues if you want to catch shows... like Mercury Lounge, Living Room, Piano's, Cake Shop, and fun rock n' roll DJ bars like Motor City.

I don't know anyone that has stayed here but this place doesn't look bad:

Also - when are you going in March? I'll be down there end of March/start of April for a bit and can recommend some good local bands to catch that are playing around that time.

Thanks Mary!

We're heading down on Wed Mar 26 and heading back to Toronto on Sat Mar 29... Attending a conference at Colombia all day Thurs & Friday. Dave Brubeck is playing at the Lincoln Center on that weekend, which is currently my top pick! Anything else of note around then? I know Caribou will be in town but I plan to catch him in Toronto soon instead.

If I was going to NYC, I would be trying to get tickets to Conan O'Brien, Jon Stewart, and anything else that might shoot there. I was there with my buddy paul back in '94 and we got to see 2 tapings of Conan. That was some fun shit.

We ran into Phil Lesh on the street with is kids that time as well. I would love to go there again. It's obviously been too long.

i'd be catching this show...

Lettuce (featuring Sam Kininger, Eric Krasno, Adam Deitch, Adam Smirnoff, Erik Coomes, Neal Evans, Ryan Zoidis & Rashawn Ross) will release their new album, "RAGE" on April 22 after which they will do a short national tour.

In the mean time, Lettuce will be playing a pair of shows at the newly renovated Sullivan Hall on February 29 & March 1.
