graphic programs for posters etc.

not sure if there are free trials for adobe illustrator but you may have the best luck with that? mind you, there will be a learning curve.

I think Open Office

includes a presentation package, and I think it's file-compatible with PowerPoint; it's also free.

I've seen some fantastic posters done by hand and then reproduced in colour.

if it was me, I'd offer the graphic designer above $25 to do a poster.

illustrator is $$$$ but inkscape is free and i find it to be awesome and really easy to pick up if you are a beginner.

that's for drawing. for photo editing, you'll want the gimp .

you can download warez version of illustrator, photoshop, ms publisher, whatever you want is out there for free. Don't give these companies $800 just to make a couple of posters.

I've been using the photo editor in Photobucket

it's free and you can do text on an image plus do some effects. It's limited but if it's a simple thing you are looking to get done then it's easy and free.
