bradm
i just use powerpoint, but it's far from free ...I think Open Officehttp://www.openoffice.orgincludes a presentation package, and I think it's file-compatible with PowerPoint; it's also free.Aloha,Brad
bouche
Just use crayons.I've seen some fantastic posters done by hand and then reproduced in colour. if it was me, I'd offer the graphic designer above $25 to do a poster.

larry_llama
illustrator is $$$$ but inkscape is free and i find it to be awesome and really easy to pick up if you are a beginner.that's for drawing. for photo editing, you'll want the gimp . bouche
you can download warez version of illustrator, photoshop, ms publisher, whatever you want is out there for free. Don't give these companies $800 just to make a couple of posters. Edited October 1, 2008 by Guest
Jay Funk Dawg
I've been using the photo editor in Photobucketit's free and you can do text on an image plus do some effects. It's limited but if it's a simple thing you are looking to get done then it's easy and free.
