How does this work? Math people...

You've got to try this... kind of intriguing, any way to explain this?

1. Key in the first 3 digit of your phone number into the calculator.

2. Multiply by 80.

3. Add 1.

4. Multiply by 250.

5. Plus last 4 digit of your phone number.

6. Plus last 4 digit of your phone number again.

7. Minus 250.

8. Divide by 2 at last.

Is this your handy phone number???

Can someone figure out and explain how the arithmetic works??

Asparagus should be able to figure it out!

Consider your phone # to be two numbers: one of three digits, one of four digits. Call the first number 'x' and second number 'y'.

After all the manipulations, you end up with:

((80x + 1)250 + 2y - 250)/2

Expand things out:

The first part turns out to be 80x times 250, divided by two, which is 10000. Since x is a three-digit number (say, 123), 10000x is 1230000, a seven-digit number.

The only bits left are (250 + 2y - 250)/2 which works out to be 2y/2 (since the two 250s cancel out), which is y. Since y was a four-digit number (say, 4567), adding that back in to the (now) seven-digit number would give 1234567.

Piece o' cake.

Aloha,

Brad
