ollie Posted July 11, 2009 Report Share Posted July 11, 2009 I'm looking to get a second laptop sometime soon and have been toying with the idea of buying my first Mac. Not because I'm dissatisfied with PC or anything, but thinking more along the lines of... why have two of the same thing?Anyway, I still can't get past the incredible difference in cost for a Mac. The model I'm looking at is almost 3 times the cost of an equivalent PC.Can any Mac fans sell me on something other than "it just works better". What actual, tangible benefit am I getting from buying a Mac? I should say that I've never (knock wood) had a problem with any PC I've owned in terms of viruses, hard drive crashes, etc. So even something like "better security" isn't much of a selling point for me.I want to buy a Mac. Images, videos, etc. If you're like me, you probably have created your own structure. I like the way mac osx organizes files. I don't have to create my own folders to feel organized.Actually, probably the BIGGEST support of all this is their Finder/Spotlight software. You can INSTANTLY find any file that you're looking for just by typing a few characters. You get a list of all possible matches (folders, video, audio, etc) as you type in the spotlight. Microsoft has tried to match this, but they are no where near close.Backup using timemachine is flawless. It's worth spending 60 bucks for an external 500 gig to hook up as a backup in timemachine. I'm pretty sure you would enjoy a mac like you probably did with your first pc. You'll love the packin software with Garageband, iPhoto, iMovie, iDvd too. Garageband can provide endless amount of fun. You could bring back Union of Authority!also if you get an iMac, you'll be amazed at the space that it DOESN't take up. And the whole "new" factor.But the thing is that I like having the kind of control over my file structure that you see as a bane with PCs. I don't like or want my OS to organize my files for me. I enjoy the organizing aspect!And again, knock wood, but I've never, ever had use for a backup system. Having duplicate copies of my files is something I *don't* want. bouche Posted July 11, 2009 Report Share Posted July 11, 2009 Don't get me wrong. You can organize your files however you want. Spotlight will still help you index and find shit instantly. Spaces is a nice feature of Leopard too. You can configure apps to open in different "spaces" or desktops. I have garageband open in a separate desktop and it switches flawlessly. It helps to avoid open app clutter. Expose helps with that as well by allowing you to hide and show everythign with a simple keystroke or mouse movement. The only time I needed to use the backup was when my computer was stolen, but my backup drive was left behind. It's really cool though because it magically stores the state of every file on your machine. I don't know how they do it, but you can go back 3 days, 4 days, or 4 months. Whatever you want. It's more than just a simple backup. You should read up on all the features. Someone told me the mac reformats your ipod if you've been syncing it to a PC. I thought about a mac laptop but I'd still need my pc, so that kind of made me reconsider. mattm Posted July 13, 2009 Report Share Posted July 13, 2009 If someone gave me a free mac there's a tiny chance I might use it but probably not Bouche, the backup thing you're talking about works because it takes diff's of your files (doesn't store a backup of the whole file, just the differences since last modification which can be quickly applied). Look up diff and svn for examples of this type of thing. For binary files it only has to take a backup once and then from that point on will only take a backup if the file changes. It's a really neat idea and any software company that has multiple developers will use this kind of thing for content management (make a mistake? revert back to the previous revision and you're good to go As to defragging, vista and up defrag every week but to be honest, with the speed of today's computers it's not that big of a deal. I'm using Windows 7 right now and it's quite nice. It's basically vista but runs faster and has some easier to use features for those that want them. I turn indexing off, though (in reference to the spotlight thing). I already know where all my files are (1.25 TB worth), it's all good, no searching necessary. The only benefit that I can personally see to having a MAC is that it's a unix box and therefore more secure than a windows machine but then if you just stay clear of the porn and don't open up email attachments, you're good to go on that front. Now, I have a completely worthless hunk of silicon and plastic, or a $1200 repair bill.2.5 yrs?!? Gimme a break. I'm very unimpressed. And, no, I don't have the extended warranty. And, yes, I still consider it a problem with mac as I've never known anyone to lose the whole f%$king computer after 2.5 yrs.As far as the "features" of macs go, I don't think very much of it all. I honestly didn't feel there was that much difference from all the pc based computers I'd used. WIth the exception that the file management system on macs blows.If you use the file manager to rearrange photos or music, the applications that you use to browse and listen will no longer access the files.
