Billy Martin of Medeski Martin and Wood (Drums and percussion) and Wil Blades of Stanton Moore Trio (Hammond B-3 Organ) came together in 2011 to form this incredible danceable and highly improvisational duo. The 5th Annual NuJazz Festival is back, presenting a cutting edge concert series in Toronto this November.

The Shuffle Demons are a Canadian jazz fusion band, who had a surprise Top 40 hit in Canada with their 1986 single "Spadina Bus". In 2004, the band coordinated a world record for the largest number of people playing saxophone simultaneously, with over 900 saxophones all playing the theme from Hockey Night in Canada. For over 25 years, jazz-funk-fusion band The Shuffle Demons have been entertaining fans around the world and have recently released a new album on True North Records entitled "Cluster Funk"

"Billy Martin & Wil Blades' debut album Shimmy is full of breakbeat funk, stellar jazz improvisation, and instinctive syncopation...everything a drum and B-3 duo record should be." ~All Music

Organ and drums duo, Billy Martin & Wil Blades, perform 11 shows this November, including an appearance at The Great Hall in Toronto on Saturday, November 17 presented by the 5th annual NuJazz Festival. Billy Martin, the drummer for the legendary experimental jazz trio Medeski, Martin & Wood, and Wil Blades, a much buzzed about young organist from the San Francisco live music scene, first came together for a low-key, one-off late night set during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2011. The music that evening was so deep in the pocket that the pair knew instantly there would be more shows together in their future. A West Coast tour was arranged for later in the year, which played to packed houses from Washington to California. In the middle of the run, Martin & Blades ducked into a Berkeley recording studio to capture what would become their debut album, Shimmy. Their approach was purely old school in the tradition of those essential organ-groove sides by the likes of Charles Earland, Brother Jack McDuff and Groove Holmes.Throughout the outing, the electricity between the drummer and organist runs high voltage on tracks like "Brother Bru," "Toe Thumb" and "Les & Eddie." The chemistry between them is kinetic, assuring that even while the duo is reaching back to embrace the retro, they can't help but push the tradition ever forward.

More on The Shuffle Demons

http://www.shuffledemons.com

The Shuffle Demons first broke onto the Canadian music scene in 1984 with an electrifying musical fusion that drew in equal measure from Sun Ra, Charles Mingus, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys. The band was one of the first indie acts to break out on MuchMusic. This band was genre bending, highly visually entertaining, funny, and best of all, could really PLAY. All their eye catching, crowd pleasing stunts were backed up by incredibly solid musicianship and real ground-breaking playing.

Over a twenty eight year span The Shuffle Demons have released eight CDs, two hit videos, won several music awards, done numerous tv and radio appearances and toured nationally and internationally including 25 cross Canada tours, 5 US tours, 16 European tours, as well as tours of Mexico, India, China, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Cuba playing on big festival stages, theatres and clubs.
