BUSH EXPLOITS MLK'S GRAVE FOR POLITICAL FUNDRAISER

On last year's Martin Luther King Day, President Bush eloquently honored the memory of Dr. King, saying "I believe [in the] power of his words, the

clarity of his vision and the courage of his leadership." This year, however, instead of honoring the legacy of Dr. King, President Bush has decided to use Martin Luther King Day as tool to force the federal government to subsidize a fundraising trip for his re-election campaign.

The New York Times reports that the President "hastily planned" a visit to Dr. King's grave, and then will immediately go to "a $2,000-a-person fundraiser in Atlanta." Even though Bush may spend the majority of his time hobnobbing with donors at the fundraiser, because he will briefly visit Dr. King's grave, he is allowed to deem the entire trip "official" and then bill

taxpayers for portions of the huge cost of hotel rooms, rental cars, security, and travel. And those are no small costs - the Washington Post

notes that Air Force One alone costs $57,000 an hour to operate.

Civil rights leaders are outraged at the blatant exploitation of Dr. King's birthday as a tool to force taxpayers to bankroll a political fundraiser. Rev. Timothy McDonald, an organizer of Atlanta's Martin Luther King Day celebrations said, "It's the epitome of insult. He's really coming here for the fundraiser. The King wreath was an afterthought." Despite Bush's platitudes about Dr. King's legacy, he is so focused on his fundraiser - and so neglectful of the Martin Luther King Day celebrations - that he has done

little to prevent his visit's security detail from limiting access to a historic black church where a civil rights symposium will be taking place.

In response to Bush's visit, protestors are marching "with bullhorns, signs and thumping drums, shouting for the president to stay away." They say that on top of Bush using Dr. King's grave as pretext for a fundraiser, his policies have directly insulted Dr. King's memory. As Rev. Raphael Allen said, "His administration has never supported anything to help the poor, education, or children. It's all about isolationism and greed for the upper class. That's not promoting the legacy of Dr. King."

Bush to push couples to altar

Major initiative to boost marriage

'A way to solidify conservative base'

WASHINGTON - U.S. government officials say they are planning an extensive election-year initiative to promote marriage, especially among low-income couples, and they are weighing whether President George W. Bush should push the plan in his State of the Union speech next week.

For months, administration officials have been working with conservative groups on the proposal, which would provide at least $1.5 billion for training to help couples develop interpersonal skills that sustain "healthy marriages."

The officials said they believed the measure was especially timely now because they were facing pressure from conservatives eager to see the federal government defend traditional marriage, following a decision by the highest court in Massachusetts. The court ruled in November that gay couples had a right to marry under the state's constitution.

"This is a way for the president to address the concerns of conservatives and to solidify his conservative base," said a presidential adviser.

Several conservative Christian advocacy groups are pressing Bush to go further and use his State of the Union speech to champion a constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriage.

The pro-marriage proposal is the type of relatively inexpensive but politically potent initiative that appeals to White House officials at a time when they are squeezed by growing federal budget deficits.

It also plays to Bush's desire to be viewed as a "compassionate conservative." In his re-election campaign, administration officials said, Bush is likely to visit programs trying to increase marriage rates in poor neighbourhoods.

Some women's groups such as the NOW Legal Defence and Education Fund oppose government programs that promote marriage. "Such programs intrude on personal privacy, may ignore the risk of domestic violence and may coerce women to marry," said Timothy Casey, a lawyer at the fund.

Why doesn't some god-damn "journalist" ask Bush what he thinks King would think of him?

The King They Still Won't Talk About

by Derrick Jackson

http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0122-02.htm

Some choice King gems from the article:

''I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today - my own government,'' King said.

He also said: ''I am as deeply concerned about our troops there as anything else. For it occurs to me that what we are submitting them to in Vietnam is not simply the brutalizing process that goes on in any war where armies face each other and seek to destroy. We are adding cynicism to the process of death, for they must know after a short period that none of the things we claim to be fighting for are really involved. Before long, they must know that their government has sent them into a struggle among Vietnamese, and the more sophisticated surely realize that we are on the side of the wealthy and the secure while we create a hell for the poor...

''Increasingly, by choice or by accident, this is the role our nation has taken - the role of those who make peaceful revolution impossible by refusing to give up the privileges and the pleasures that come from the immense profits of overseas investment. I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a `thing-oriented' society to a `person-oriented' society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered....

''This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation's homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into veins of peoples normally humane ... cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice, and love. A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.... Our only hope today lies in our ability to recapture the revolutionary spirit and go out into a sometimes hostile world declaring eternal hostility to poverty, racism, and militarism.''

When we see our presidential candidates quoting this King, then we know that they really share King's guts, determination, impatience. When this part of King becomes as much a part of the holiday as ''I Have a Dream,'' then we know that our leaders truly share his sense of consciousness.

Gov't to Overhaul Employee Drug Tests

By ADAM GELLER, AP Business Writer

NEW YORK - The federal government is planning to overhaul its employee drug testing program to include scrutiny of workers' hair, saliva and sweat, a shift that could spur more businesses to revise screening for millions of their own workers.

The planned changes, long awaited by the testing industry, reflect government efforts to be more precise in its drug screening and to outmaneuver a small but growing subset of workers who try to cheat on urine-based tests.

Some businesses have already adopted alternative testing, despite criticism by privacy advocates. But others have held back, partly awaiting government standards.

Alternative testing methods would give employers more certainty about the timing and scope of drug usage than is now possible solely with urine sampling, said Robert Stephenson II, an official with the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Casino operators and local police departments were among the first to use hair testing for pre-employment screening because it allows detection of drug use over much longer periods than urine. It is also now used by employers including Kraft Foods Inc. and brewer Anheuser-Busch Cos.

Oh, the irony- choose your addiction/habit !

ahess, dr. hux, check out this site for some more info on paul. there are more links to articles regarding paul in the media, and his history and questionable practices before he took office. sure, he hasn't announced big brother style drug testing and fingerprinting etc.. but his money-lust and apparent lack of social conscience is definitely cause for concern

To be fair to Paul, those actions were taken as the legislative policy of another politician, not of his own. He did not have final say of his own actions thanks to responsible government, and it's use of decentralization.

Second, Paul Martin's father is one of the men and women responsible for the socialized Canadian health care system. Say what you will, but we do get decent care very cheaply.

Lastly, I get along well with a lot of assholes. People like Stapes, QQC, and SugaMegs who are vastly unaware of world politics [Razz][Wink] but that doesn't mean I'm responsible for what they do, or them for what I do.

Likewise for Paulo and Dubya. Just because the American is a coke-head doesn't mean that the Canadian grass smoker can't hang out with him and then snicker into his suit's lapel at the actions of the maniac.

I think it's better that Bush believes we agree, even if we don't. That way it's easier to stab the fuck-stick in the neck from behind. [Mad]

Not to mention it makes it easier for us to go see shows down there. [Razz]

Paul Martin can kiss my ass while he's at it!

i have NO reason as of yet to say...alright Martin's the man

i'm guessing he'll snuggle right up there with Georgie boy in the months to come

allz i can say is if a potential employer asks me for a hair folicle so they can test me, i'm telling them to go to hell...

And all i do is smoke weed. no other drugs. but i dont care. we live in a free country. if i owned a company, i would not expect my employee's to give me their hair samples....

what the hell kind of country is this? i personally think it should be illegal!

the more i think about this, the more fucked up i think it is. I mean, if your employee is a good person, a hard worker, and qualified, what difference does it make if he's a drug user.

I personally know of 'drug users' who are doctors, lawyers, teachers, and dentists (i know cause they are all clientel).

has anyone here experienced a hair folicle drug test?

well, i've never met you before Hux

so calling you ignorant because you can't see that a DSO show is a hundred times better than that Bobby Ratdog stuff would be unfair!

political beliefs are not ALWAYS based on ignorance, (although all kinds of people who vote don't know their arse from a hole in the ground)

if you're happy with Martin, well hoooray for you...not left enough for me, and that's my choice

have a happy day

if i was comparing anything it was their pictures with their hands in the air like some kinda preacher...they even look alike!

um...wrong, read your post, it starts with:

"is junior gonna be joining him?"

Your post implied Martin would (or is the type) to follow Bush's lead in disgustingly politicizing a visit to Martin Luther King's grave...

I responded that it was an unfair and ignorant comparison of the substance and intentions of these two men.
