Sharon Jones Is Soul Sister No. 1!

- Born and raised in James Brown’s hometown of Augusta, Georgia.

- Like many great soul singers, including James himself and Aretha, Sharon began singing in church at a very young age. With her natural sense of showmanship, her talent soon brought her beyond the Sunday choir straight to center stage as the lead singer of more than one up-and-coming Funk band.

- It wasn’t long before she was being booked to perform with the top names in Soul, including the Four Tops, Peaches and Herb, The Drifters, and Maceo Parker.

- Sharon had been no stranger to studio work, doing everything from Gospel and Blues sessions to Pop Ballads to Dance music Diva sessions (often credited as Miss Lafaye).

- However, it wasn’t until the late nineties when she hooked up with the Soul and Funk purists of Desco Records in New York that she recorded the singles for which she has become well known. Songs like "Damn it’s Hot," "Switchblade," "The Landlord," "You Better Think Twice," and a blazing version of J.B.’s "I Got the Feelin’" became instant club classics

in the underground funk scene overseas.

- When Sharon first toured internationally with The Soul Providers in May of 1999, she was amazed to see the crowds who came out to hear her sing and even more amazed when they seemed to know most of the words better than her.

- She has just finished recording her own full-length album with The Dap-Kings to be released on Daptone Records. The first single "Got a Thing On My Mind", has already become a fixture on the dance floors of the international funk scene.

The Dap-Kings Are Soul Excitement!

THE DAP-KINGS are the house band for Daptone Records, where today's hottest Funk and Soul is laid to tape. They are presently the worlds mightiest Live Funk and Soul Revue, unique in their ability to deliver the kind of Soul Excitement that hasn't been felt since Mr. Brown himself graced the stage of the Apollo in 1969.

The Dap-Kings are made up of musicians from The Soul Providers and The Mighty Imperials, both of which gained recognition for laying the music behind Desco Records' legendary catalog of funk 45's and LP's. Though their recordings are unmatched for their hardness and sheer ability to make people dance, their live show is what makes them a phenomenon.

When the Dap-Kings take to the stage with their dance steps and matching soul suits, it is as if someone lit the fuse on a keg of Soul Dynamite!

The show commences with a dose of hard instrumentals which never fail to get the crowd moving like only deep hard funk can. Then when things seem like they can go no higher, the Dap-Kings bring their blazing vocalists to the stage. Backed by the tightest, roughest funk band on the scene, vocalists like Sharon Jones, Lee Fields, Joseph Henry, and Naomi Davis escort crowds to new and uncharted levels of Get-Down and Dance!

The Dap-Kings are:

Homer "Funky-Foot" Jenkins, Drums

Binky Griptite, Guitar, Emcee

Bugaloo Velez, Congas, tambourine

David Guy, Trumpet

Bosco "Bass" Mann, Bass, Bandleader

Neal Sugarman, Tenor Saxophone

Otis Youngblood, Baritone Saxophone

Ken hooked me up with a CD of these guys playing and it hasn't been out of my CD player in two solid weeks. This is the one we've all been waiting for people! This is going to be the party of parties. This music is so funky there is no way you can stand still. It'll be a room full of smiling dancing people and I cannot wait!

I'm so glad you're into those guys Will. I think you've hit the nail on the head with your comments. I have no doubt this show will do well, and be well. I just hope the right people see this, show up, have a great time and be happy they took a chance on a band that they may have never heard of before.

I took a look in three different record stores yesterday, trying to find some of their CDs. As you might imagine, I was completely unsuccessful. As I don't have a personal credit card, online ordering is out of the question for the time being. Does anyone have any other bright ideas where I might find some of their albums?

Oh. Upon inspection of their record label's web site it appears that I may already have the only full-length album. Damn!

i was gonna buy the dap kings album at the antibalas show, but it sold out before i did. SO, i bought 'Dub Side of the Moon' another project of the keyboard player (victor). not bad, gets better with each listen. in the picture above (poster), i also recognize the little guy holding the tambourine... ive seen him play percussion with antibalas before too...
