I knew that. Stupid morning getting my mind all fuzzy...

Interesting call on Aitken getting the 7th D job. I really don't see him in the running at this point.

If Ron Hainsey and Marcel Hossa don't make the team this year, they are essentially trade-bait for a better placement in a future draft.

I'm hearing on habsworld (I thought it was habsworld-it might be hearsay) that Hossa and Bonk have had some good chemistry together, and Marcel's chances look good. Latendresse is too young, Guy chants or not, him and Price are almost certain to be sent down. Your guesses for the next round of cuts looks pretty good, none of those guys are really being talked about much.

spoken like a truly bitter Sens fan. The truth is that Bonk is the highest scorer for the Habs during the pre-season, and he will (most likely) be paired up with Hossa and Sundstrom to form a pretty formidable checking/special units line.

"Bow down to the one you serve!"

Habs news bits:

- Guillaume Latendresse scored the game winner and added an assist in the Habs pre-season win against the Bruins last night.

- Yann Danis played his first full NHL game last night, stopping 24 of 21 shots. He is expected to be Jose Theodore's backup for the start of the season.

- The surplus of young talent that Montreal is experiencing right now is not going unnoticed by other teams in the league. 9 NHL teams sent scouts to watch the game last night including the Rangers, Coyotes, Devils, Predators, Senators, Capitals, Canucks, Blues, and Kings. If Ron Hainsey and Marcel Hossa don't make the team this year, you can expect a trade.

- Yanic Perreault, left unsigned by the Habs as an unrestricted free agent, has been practicing with the Nashville Predators without a contract. He currently leads the team in points, which either bodes well for Perreault, or bodes porely for the Predators.

- Jozef Balej, the player that the Habs traded for the services of Alex Kovalev, has been sent down to the minors by the Rangers.

- Micheal Ryder should be back in the line-up tonight after missing most of the pre-season with an ankle injury.

- Expect a few more cuts today before the team travels to Moncton for the game against the Bruins tonight.

- The Habs end the pre-season with a home-and-home series with the Senators.

Five more cuts announced today:

- Corey Locke

- Andrei Kostitsyn

- Jonathan Ferland

- Jean-Phillipe Cote

- Andrew Archer

The Habs still have 27 players on the roster, therefore they need to cut 4 more... Latendresse is still in the line-up...

Bob Gainey announced that by Sunday the Habs will have decided whether media darling Guillaume Latendresse will play the upcoming season with Montreal, or whether he'll go back to Les Voltigeurs de Drummondvile.

Latendresse has been a stand-out all preseason long, but at age 18, Gainey is cautious not to bring him into the league too soon. Lantendresse would classify as an unrestricted free agent at age 25, arguably in the prime of his career.

Another thing that Gainey has to contend with is that if rookies like Ron Hainsey and Marcel Hossa are sent to the minors, they would first have to clear waivers. I'm not exactly sure why, but it could have something to do with their contracts. They both signed NHL contracts earlier in September.

Gainey has also confirmed that he has talked to at least three teams regarding the possibility of trades...

The Hamilton Bulldogs have begun their training camp which includes all the players that the Habs dropped and also include 8 players that the Oilers drop. The Habs signed a one-year deal with the Oilers to let Edmonton share the Bulldogs as a development team.

Marcel Hossa traded!!

You read that right. Marcel Hossa has been traded to the Rangers for minor league enforcer Garth Murray.

It appears that the Habs are going to keep Guillaume Latendresse in the lineup, and to make room in the line-up it would involve demoting Marcel Hossa. This would've required him to clear waivers first. Rather than get nothing for him, the Habs arranged to get the services of Murray.

Murray will report to the Hamilton Bulldogs immediately.

A lot of Montreal fans are already questioning the sanity behind this trade... including me...

The Habs are going to announce on Oct. 15th the retiring of three jerseys... Any guesses?

The following numbers are already retired:

1- Jacques Plante

2- Doug Harvey

4- Jean Beliveau

7- Howie Morenz

9- Maurice Richard

10- Guy Lafleur

16- Henri Richard

I'm thinking:

5- Boom Boom Geoffrion

12- Yvon Cournoyer

29- Ken Dryden

with longshot guesses:

23- Bob Gainey

33- Patrick Roy (longshot, but possible)

I was initially thinking that they were going to try and retire the first 10 numbers, but nobody really famous ever had #3, #6, and #8.

They will hold off on retiring #33 for a couple more years. The deal is that they are already planning for the Habs 100th anniversary in 2009.

Habs president Pierre Boivin said the following:

“No jersey has yet been retired in this arena,†said Boivin of the Bell Centre, the Canadiens’ home since March 1996. “Yet by the time we reach our centennial, we will have retired the jersey of every player who deserves that honor.â€

The article also says:

The total number of jerseys to be retired in the coming years was not revealed.

So we are dealing with a rather large potential for retired jersey...

#5- Boom Boom Geoffrion

#11- Kirk Muller (longshot), Ryan Walter (longshot)

#12- Yvon Cournoyer

#14- Mario Tremblay (longshot)

#15- Bobby Smith, Rejean Houle (longshot)

#18- Serge Savard

#19- Larry Robinson

#20- Peter Mahovlich

#21- Guy Carbonneau

#22- John Ferguson, Steve Shutt (oh oh...)

#23- Bob Gainey, Jean-Guy Talbot (oh oh...)

#25- Jacques Lemaire

#26- Mats Naslund, Jacques Laperriere (oh oh...)

#29- Ken Dryden, Charlie Hodge (oh oh...)

#33- Patrick Roy

#43- Patrice Brisebois (14 years with the Habs... c'mon!)

From Spectors Hockey

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Pat Hickey reports the Montreal Canadiens demoted once highly touted blueline prospect Ron Hainsey to their farm club yesterday. He had to pass through waivers first but cleared, indicating other clubs hold the same assessment as Habs management of Hainsey's ability to make it in the NHL this season. Hickey also reported GM Bob Gainey tried to trade Hainsey in the days leading up to the team's final cuts but there were no takers. Hainsey might be successfully recalled by the Canadiens at some point in the season, although if another team claimed him off waivers, the Habs would have to pay half his salary.

Spector's Note: Hainsey's stock has dropped noticeably over the past three years. Once considered a big part of their future, Hainsey now seems to have no future at all with the Canadiens. It wouldn't be surprising if Gainey shops him later in the season, either singly or as part of a package deal.

Zednik should be returning from a groin pull injury later this week, but he will most likely miss key games against Ottawa and Atlanta.

Replacing him has been rookie Alex Perezhogin, who has been playing with Koivu and Kovalev on the Habs top line.

Pierre Dagenais has been a healthy scratch after having difficulties adapting to the new system and earning 6 penalties in 2 games. Replacing him is designated enforcer, the monstrous Raitas Ivanans.

It might be a little early for that... We'll see what his production is once he drops back down to the second line later this week. I think Marcel Hossa would be a safer pick because he will be seeing a lot of ice time with the Rangers.

Raitas Ivanans did not fly with the team to Atlanta after being fucked up by Zdeno Chara. Pierre Dagenais will more than likely return to the line-up.

Ilya Kovalchuk will make his return to the NHL against Montreal.

The current line-ups being used by Claude Julien are:

Perezhogin-Koivu-Kovalev

Ryder-Ribeiro-Higgins

Bulis-Bonk-Sundstrom

Ivanans-Begin-Plekanec

Guillaume Latendresse has 6 points in two games with the Voltigeurs de Drummondville so far.
