  2. http://bit.ly/a0581O Band of Horses – Everything All The Time Band of Horses is the phoenix ascending from the carcass of Carissa’s Wierd, Ben Bridwell and Matt Brooke’s former band. (But what happened to the proposed November 16th?) While the penchant for beautiful melody is present everywhere here, that’s pretty much where the similarity between both groups stops. Whereas their former project centered itself on slower-than-codeine-cough-syrup-on-a-cold-day, lushly textured sad-pop, Band of Horses is a full-on indie rock band that writes loud, raw, mid-tempo pop songs and really loves Neil Young. Gone are the slow, layered, weepy, singly tempoed songs of heartbreak and loss. No more violins, no more space, no more, no more. Bridwell’s vocals are stretched here (and they could be mistaken for Wayne Coyne’s or a young Young’s on first listen), but he and Brooke have a different m.o. on their new project. They play a plethora of instruments between them, from banjos to pedal steels and piano, and Chris Early pays bass along with an assortment of drummers that includes touring kit man Tim Meining (though Sera Cahoone (another ex-Clarissa’s) sits in the chair on about half this set). The ramped-up electric guitars are a welcome wind blowing through this heavier, denser music. Check the dreamy Chris Bell-meets-Crazy Horse “First Song†or the snare-popping “Wicked Gil,†with a killer six-string finale. “Funeralâ€â€˜s dynamic hints at something less meaty but then kicks into gear. It’s nearly anthemic. There are more meditative moments, though. The country-ish “Part One†is acoustic and tender. But “The Great Salt Lake,†which follows it, is simply majestic. There is a Beach Boys melody in here somewhere (perhaps something extrapolated from “Sloop John Bâ€?) and Bridwell’s vocal warbles dangerously close to B. Wilson’s, but is much murkier — a more blissed-out, distorted jangle-fest. “Weed Party†is a silly, raucous country-rocker that crosses the Byrds with latter-day Hüsker Dü. The closer is the spare, meditative “St. Augustineâ€; it’s as beautiful as Young’s “Through My Sails,†from Zuma. Everything All the Time isn’t a perfect album. It gets a little long in the tooth in places and samey-sounding. The exuberance is the mirror image of Carissa’s Wierd’s downer reserve; it’s as if the fellas were trying really hard — perhaps a little too hard — to distance themselves from their previous incarnation. Nonetheless, it’s a decent first effort that warrants repeated listening. - by Thom Jurek Track List 1. “The First Song†3:43 2. “Wicked Gil†2:57 3. “Our Swords†2:26 4. “The Funeral†5:22 5. “Part One†2:36 6. “The Great Salt Lake†4:45 7. “Weed Party†3:09 8. “I Go to the Barn Because I Like The†3:06 9. “Monsters†5:21 10. “St. Augustine†2:41 http://bit.ly/a0581O
  3. Just in: Levon Helm's Ramble on the Road with Lucinda Williams rbi productions presents LEVON HELM’S RAMBLE ON THE ROAD WITH LUCINDA WILLIAMS March 4 & 5, 2011, at 8 p.m. Massey Hall | $54.50 - $79.50 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Levon Helm has enjoyed an illustrious career as leader of Levon and the Hawks, a founding member of the legendary group The Band, and as a multi-Grammy award winning solo artist. In 2004, Helm conceived and began his Midnight Ramble Sessions, a series of live performances at his studios in Woodstock, NY, to celebrate his return to music following treatments for throat cancer, which silenced the famous southern voice to a whisper for over 5 years. His series has continued with regular guests including John Hiatt, Emmylou Harris, Dr. John, Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint among many others. Helm’s Midnight Ramble would always include his great classics from his days with The Band, but also celebrate the traditional American music now referred to as “Americana," a genre in which Helm has been celebrated, winning Grammy Awards for both his albums, Dirt Farmer (2007) and Electric Dirt (2009), which earned the honour as "Best Americana Album" in the category’s inaugural year. Joining in on the Ramble and with a full set of her own inspired music is the multi-Grammy award-winning Louisiana native, Lucinda Williams. Williams and her band will perform music from her Lost Highway release Little Honey (2008) as well as favourites from her acclaimed catalogue. Equal parts blues, folk, country and rock anchored by deeply poetic lyrics that convey the full spectrum of the human experience and the emotions associated with it, Williams has long been praised for her stunning, raw and affecting live performances. Helm first brought his Ramble on the Road in to Massey Hall in June 2010, was both an instant sell-out and much applauded by critics and fans alike. Helm’s return to his favourite concert hall, this time with Lucinda Williams, is sure to be among 2011’s “can’t miss†concerts of the year. 12. http://bit.ly/aTnjS4 Hindu Love Gods (Warren Zevon & R.E.M.) Hindu Love Gods was an American pop/rock and blues band that was, in essence, an occasional side project of members of R.E.M., with (at various times) Warren Zevon and Bryan Cook. The band debuted with 3 scattered gigs (all in Athens, GA) in 1984. The group played mostly cover tunes, though a few unreleased originals also made it into the mix. The first gig took place on Valentine’s Day, 1984, and featured Bryan Cook (vocals and piano), and R.E.M. members Bill Berry (drums) Peter Buck (guitar) and Mike Mills (bass). The follow-up gig took place two weeks later; added to the line-up was R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe on vocals and drums, and Warren Zevon on vocals. Zevon performed his hit “Werewolves Of Londonâ€, as well several other songs that were, at that point, unrecorded (including “Boom Boom Mancini†and “Trouble Waiting To Happenâ€) The final 1984 gig took place in June, and featured the Cook/Berry/Buck/Mills line-up. The group entered the studio as a quintet that summer, with the line-up of Berry/Buck/Cook/Mills/Zevon. They recorded two songs for release as a single, which were eventually released in 1986. The A-Side, “Gonna Have A Good Time Tonight†was a cover of an Easybeats tune; the B-side, “Narrator,†was a Bill Berry composition that R.E.M. had played live, but never recorded. (The song’s composition was credited to Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe). After a period of inactivity, Hindu Love Gods played one 1986 gig in Athens as a benefit for the family of the recently deceased D. Boon. Line-up for this performance was Berry, Buck, Cook, Mills and Stipe. Buck, Mills and Berry later joined Zevon as his back-up band while recording Zevon’s solo album Sentimental Hygiene (1987). During an all-night (and supposedly drunken) session in the midst of recording Zevon’s album, the four recorded ten cover songs, mostly blues standards. Although originally not intended for publication, these recordings were finally released by Giant Records on the album Hindu Love Gods (1990), with the artist credit going to Hindu Love Gods. The song that received the most attention was a rock version of Prince’s 1985 hit “Raspberry Beretâ€, which reached #23 on the Modern Rock charts. During a concert at The Shadow in Kansas City in December 1990, Zevon commented that the album was “selling by the shitload,†whereupon one of his backing band informed him that it was “selling like shit.†- Wikipedia mp3@320CBR Track List 01 “Walkin’ Blues†(Robert Johnson) – 4:12 02 “Travelin’ Riverside Blues†(Robert Johnson) – 4:02 03 “Raspberry Beret†(Prince) – 3:53 04 “Crosscut Saw†(Fred Ingrahm, Bill Sanders) – 3:06 05 “Junko Pardner†(Bob Shad) – 2:39 06 “Mannish Boy†(Bo Diddley, Melvin London, Muddy Waters) – 6:57 07 “Wang Dang Doodle†(Willie Dixon) – 3:51 08 “Battleship Chains†(Terry Anderson) – 3:06 09 “I’m a One Woman Man†(Tillman Franks, Johnny Horton) – 2:16 10 “Vigilante Man†(Woody Guthrie) – 2:56 http://bit.ly/aTnjS4
