    Headies!

Spent too long in school. Thought this was a thread about head lice. Sorry. Carry on.
  2. I suppose it never hurts to raise the discussion, but I agree with Marco. If you think music is dead (or dying) then you're looking in the wrong places. Also to try and convince someone that they should be listening to one kind of music as opposed to another is generally an exercise in futility and always has been.
  3. just rolling in from Toronto (by way of Peterborough). Sweet night indeed! Nice to have some time to hang with the Rev and finally put a face to the radio voice. Really enjoyed it. Have yerself a good one tonite, my friend! Shit! sorry i miseed you Jakis. I was keeping an eye out, I really was, but I guess my memory for faces isn't as good as I thought it was. Glad you made it out though. BTW your call on the venue was bang on! I thought the sound was superb. Musically....the breakout of the Iggy Pop tune in Preservatives knocked me on my ass....didn't see that coming....and seldom have I heard a crowd erupt in applause and cheering in the middle of a ballad as they did last nite in Silver Ships. Cool (Benny woulda been proud Tha D Funk) Toronto is a little out of my show range (that's the first show Ive seen the band play there), but I was so taken by the venue that weather permitting, I'm seriously thinking of hitting up the Dec show there. Right now tho, time for some rest.......
  4. All the best Deeps! May you run a good race.....
  5. I agree and yes with a son in the industry I have a vested interest in such a discussion, but the fact remains the same: with its limited population and vast geography, Canada has never been conducive to making a living with music. I'm sure there are lots of folks on here who know tales of those who have given it up or reduced it to a sideline simply because it wasn't financially viable. As things evolve, SOCAN may find it will have to revise some of it's own regulations etc. So be it. In the end, the bottom line remains the same and Chameleon has stated it very well.
  6. TONIGHT! The lady shall be having some guests in........
  7. What they want to know is who is responsible for the shows at the ACC - the promoter or Maple Leaf Sport & Entertainment Ltd. Good question.
  8. Interesting read. Thanks, Hamilton. SOCAN may not be making many friends these days, but i agree that the channels of revenue for our musicians need to be more clearly defined. They won't win every case. That's OK. They shouldn't, but it's their job to clarify. The question here is not whether the fee should be paid for these shows, but who should pay it. Ultimately, it comes down to who put on the concerts in question (and hence is responsible for the tariff). Did the promoter simply rent the ACC (for a fee) and ultimately hold responsibility for the show and its profits? Or did MLSE hire the promoter (for a fee) to stage a show for which they (MLSE) ultimately held responsibility for and collected the profits on? MLSE is claiming it's the first. Time will tell.
  9. Not sure KevO. They refer to the lad as Benny. hey Rev, if you make it in Wed nite, bring me a SYB t-shirt (Sm or Med). Tell James to cough up the cash and to chalk it up as an early Xmas gift for his dear ole dad haha woulda loved to have seen a Bucks/Spades show go down at the Montreal House, but alas.......
  10. Happy Birthday, guys! Have yerselves a good one!
  11. yeah welcome to the 21st century eh. Glad you could make it out.
  12. Brian's Record Option on Princess St. in Kingston
  13. hey KevO...cowboy...guess what? They've now got an actual Women's Washroom at the MoHo...yeah...go figure hehe and I think mooose was there for the historic unveiling. hey guigsy, this one's for you, buddy (well, actually it's for everyone) a rarity. A song written for a friend of the band (who was killed in a hiking accident, I believe) and until recently seldom played live. I assume the young lady at the end musta been a friend of Benny's. My last clip Enjoy. "One day when we're not as strained We'll build momuments in no one's name And we won't idolize nothing We can't give away or leave behind" "and the wars....will be over and done Flowers planted in guns As if the hippies won...."
  14. Good call, Velvet, The other for Canadian music would be Before the Gold Rush (Jennings). Dave Marsh's 2 books on Springsteen (Born to Run & Glory Days) offer no great revelations, but are easy reads. I 2nd the nods for Shakey and Across the Great Divide and am just starting Bidini's On a Cold Road.
  15. That was crazy! Thanks, guigs. Those folks need to hook up with Beck.
  16. That's right. Before this ole year ends, James and the lads will make a couple of rare visits to the Big Smoke. Up close and personal. Wednesday, Nov.29 & Wednesday, Dec.27 @ the Cameron House 10:00 pm No opener this Wednesday. The band will begin with an acoustic set and then fire it up a few degrees from there. Hope some folks can make it out. A little dark (and out of sync) but here's a from Fri. nite at the MoHo.
  17. hey congratulations, PoG! There's nothing sweeter than the sound of happiness. All the best to you and Melinda!
  18. You and me both. hey Zero, try best I can to keep up with the local music scene, thru here and stillepost, and i must say your posts on both recently have been bang-on! Always passionate and articulate, seems you've kicked it up a notch recently. Keep on keeping on.....
  19. I think we all grew up. See: What's Your Job? No question that time (and demographics) is a factor here. Things aren't what they were and in some ways the jamband scene is simply a part of an industry currently experiencing tremendous upheaval. If every "classic rock" station were a "new rock" station, think of the difference it would make to emerging artists. I don't begrudge groups like the Stones and the Who the opportunity to sell/tour their music, but recently I read a quote by Noel Gallagher who claimed the price these multi-millionaires charge folks for the music was "fuckin' sick". I think he's right. There's only so much to go around. Was reading an interesting interview http://www.canada.com/components/print.aspx?id=80687d5e-d9bf-4c8d-bb12-98d767857307&k=86602 with Danny Michel in the paper this morning. One of the things Danny points out is that the notion of the album (a collection of 10 - 12 songs with accompnying art etc) is currently on the downslide. Today's musc fan is more "singles" oriented. If they hear a song (or two) they like, they will download it and are less concerned about purchasing an entire album. That has major implications for a musical genre that historically has relied on the album experience as opposed to the singles experience. Right now the traditional methods of bringing music to folks is being rewritten by artists such as Beck and the Barenaked Ladies. There is more music than ever before out there, but its survival rate is much lower. Part of the problem is that many artists have been slow to think outside the proverbial box (or album). Just my $.02
  20. Happy birthday, Eric! Have yerself a good one.
  21. Well done as always, Rev. Must confess I'm not familiar with the Magnolia Electric Company. Really liked that cut you played tonight.
