  3. Agreed. Nice to see them stand by their convictions and still come out on top.
  4. From what I've heard (and I must confess I haven't heard it all), I must say, at this point, I share Meggo and AD's disapointment. Maybe as meggo said it was the huge expectation. The presence of Arcade Fire on the international music scene is so important for the Canadian music scene that for them to come up short now would be a huge let-down. (I realize that's a pretty narrow? selfish? point of view and probably placing expectations on them that they neither want nor asked for, but that's how I feel...this morning anyways). Maybe this one's a sleeper. (Maybe I should actually listen to the whole thing ).
  5. Reading the above post and the update on their site, I guess what they're really looking for more than anything is a script for their name (James McKenty and the Spades).
  6. phew hectic times mooose. Of course, an evening at the Moho is always a tempting diversion. Word on the street is the boys are laying down some new tunes lately, so I'm anxious to catch up with them myself. If you go, travel safe, say hello to everyone and make sure they lay on some Loved on Look for ya
  7. Nice. I think they wanted the band name incorporated in the design somewhere tho. Cheque is not in the mail yet.
  8. For anyone who may be artistically inclined and have an interest. From www.thespades.ca
  9. Very close. Impresssive. Anyone who has ever been to one of the long lost Maberly Meltdowns would remember the greater Elphin area or not.
  10. Whoa, whoa, Luke! Where are ya sending these folks hehe Joey and Jenny live in Elphin which is just a stone's throw from good ole Perth here. They can often be found around this area playing together in the Hootenanny where they are on occasion joined by Sarah Harmer.
  11. Yeah this will be a good one! Once upon a time I can recall when the Shovels and the Spades did a double bill sounded like it should have been brought to you by Home Hardware or something hehehe. Great music tho. Opening tomorrow night will be Brock Zeman a fine young singer/songwriter from the Ottawa Valley. If you like the Steve Earl/Fred Eaglesmith brand of country story telling, you'll enjoy Brock. Worth catching. Good times!
  12. and this is a wonderful album by said gentleman........
  13. The re-defining of a "Canadian Moment".... Last night in Red Deer (Alberta), Travis Good (The Sadies) with a fiddle joined The Hip on stage for a version of Four Strong Winds. Been hopin it would turn up on Youtube. So far nothing. "Think I'll go out to Alberta, weather's good there in the fall" Side note: Johnny Cash has a great version of this song on the Hundred Highways disc.
  14. Interesting...for many reasons...and on many levels. Not unlike Arcade Fire these folks seem intent in bringing the power of music to a younger audience. What they lack in artistic finesse or clout, they seem to make up for with a shitload of energy and enthusiasm. I say go for it! Hey Rich is Arcade Fire part of the Revival?
  15. Cool move! Arcade Fire to play for area high school Chris Lackner The Ottawa Citizen Tuesday, January 16, 2007 One of the hottest Canadian bands, the Arcade Fire, are treating Canterbury High School students to an impromptu concert. While the Arcade Fire's upcoming five-night stints in Montreal and New York sold-out within minutes, the indie rock super-group is offering an informal concert at Canterbury's school cafeteria on the evening of Friday, Jan. 19. They are donating their time to support the Canterbury Arts Centre Development Association, a charitable organization that raises arts funding for the Ottawa school. Bandmember Richard Reed Parry, both a guitarist and percussionist with the group, was a 1995 graduate of Canterbury's literary arts program. The Montreal band's critically-acclaimed 2004 album, Funeral, brought them international stardom practically overnight. Their new album, Neon Bible, is set to be released on Mar. 6 and is one of the year's most anticipated releases. The city's pending 15-city European tour has also sold-out nearly all of its dates. Tickets for the Canterbury show are open to students, grads and CACDA members, and can be bought for $25 at school lunch hour today and tomorrow. There are limited tickets remaining and none will be sold at the door. © The Ottawa Citizen 2007

    Pedal Steel

Sad news. Pete is no longer with us having passed away yesterday. He suffered from Alzheimer's. Truly one of the great pedal steel players. RIP Story
  18. Good one Stn Mtn! As a principal. I would occasionally get a parent who wanted to be a complete asshole about something. They would eventually get so pissed off at me that they would threaten to move their child to another school. Always broke my heart when they played that card. Enjoy your weekend!

    The Mynah Birds

From what I can gather, they are from an album that Motown never released.
  20. Came across this and thought some folks might be interested. It's an early release of a couple of songs done by Toronto's Mynah Birds in around 1966. Lead singer for the band was future super-freak Rick James. On rhythm guitar and back-up vocals was a lad by the name of Neil Young. http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=5973591F1AA22FC2 http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=E71284F279EEB3E5 Motown recently released these songs from their archives.
  21. Your courage will serve you well in the days ahead, Aaron. Stay strong.
  22. A fine, upstanding citizen of the board. I always look forward to what he has to say and look forward to meeting him one day on one of my trips to town.
  23. This would be a great work even if it wasn't the last one done by the man himself. Absolutely stunning......
  24. Just a reminder that this is tonight @ the Velvet Elvis for anyone who's in the neighbourhood.
  25. Yeah good times for sure. Nice to see Snelly again and Brad, Cully and the Rev and everyone and to meet KevO and Zero (who promptly informed me that all the Principals he knew were pricks...did my best not to add to his list ). Know what you mean, Kev. Lookin' forward to New Year's. Couldn't help but think that Luke would enjoy himself more with a MoHo crowd as well Still there's something about the Cameron House that I really like and I think the crowd there is only a show or two from busting loose. (I can see why the Golden Dogs did a series of shows there). Hell even i got stuck in a corner at the back for the 2nd set the other night. That ain't gonna happen again!
