  1. This year's release (Fair and Square) reminded me just how good John Prine is, so I went back to the beginning.
  2. Thanks for the heads-up,edger. Good stuff. Reminds me of David Francey
  3. Read this morning where Olivia Newton-John is suing over the royalties (or lack thereof) from the soundtrack to Grease. Where were the lawyers when these folks were signing contracts? I remember awhile back reading an interview where the artist (i can't remember who) was asked who a new band should seek out first... a manager, a booking agent, a label etc. The answer took me back when the individual replied: Before you talk to anyone, talk to a lawyer. At first I found the answer to be pretty crass and somewhat flippant, but have since come to understand it actually has some merit. As I'm sure StnMtn can attest, for better or worse, the whole field of entertainment law has exploded in the last few years. Nowadays an entertainment lawyer does much more than simply advise on legal matters. The best known case in Canada is Chris Taylor who actually began to seek out record deals for his clients including Sam Roberts, Billy Talent etc. When he couldn't find a record deal for Metric, he started his own label and management firm (Last Gang Records/Management) and now handles both Metric and Emily Haines solo as well as numerous others. I suppose it cuts down on expenses when your lawyer is your label is your manager etc
  4. The sale of music for commercial purposes remains a contentious topic. Folks cried foul when Seger sold the rights to Like A Rock to General Motors and applauded Springsteen for refusing to license Born in the USA and were completely dumfounded when Dylan's The Times They are A Changin' showed up in a Bank of Montreal commercial. Whatever side of the fence you're on (and some days I'm on both ) it's nice to see artists such as Andrew Vincent and Jim Bryson begin to get a piece of the pie. The debate regarding Seger, Springsteen etc was about highly successful artists whose bank accounts did not require the revenue. The same cannot be said of folks like Vincent and Bryson who have long paid their dues, often, I suspect, with limited financial reward. I say go for it. Good for Kelp Records as well! Ottawa Citizen
  5. Mine are there (Springsteen, Petty, Waits etc.) with the possible exception of The Hip's World Container. Despite the Bob Rock excesses, it's their strongest effort in a long time.
  6. Good call on Exile. Great album! Although they probably never reached this level in the studio again, I wouldn't exactly consider Goats Head Soup, It's Only Rock 'n Roll or Some Girls to be write-offs.
  7. Thanks for the heads-up on this. Very enjoyable. What exactly is the Rehearsal Hall?
  8. Happy birthday, Scottie! In honour of this event, I want you to take some time to finish up what you're doing, then take a couple of weeks off
  9. Good call, Jaimoe. Something from the Little Known Facts file: Jimmy Bowskill's first CD was produced by Alec Fraser and recorded by James McKenty at his studio in Peterborough. I think Jimmy was 12 at the time.
  10. Great lookin' morning out there today! Sun sining on the ice..... Here's a little Xmas cheer from T. Rex OK you wouldn't have found this on Electric Warrior or The Slider, but hey it's the season for cheesy music
  11. A Canadian classic! I bet Burt Bacharach is still pissed off at what the Ducks did to his "My Little Red Book" haha I love it.
  12. That would be nice. I was supposed to be at a CD release in Peterborough tonight, but I'm thinking that's going to be a no-go for me anyways.
  13. yeah been freezing rain here all day
  14. Don't know about anywhere else, but in good ole Perth it's beginning to look like the Storm of '98 again. Ice everywhere...trees bent down etc. I ain't goin' nowhere....which I suppose accounts for today's usually large number of posts (for me anyways)
  15. Recognizing my last statement as being rather stupid, I wanted to add that i have Gold, Cold Roses and Jacksonville City Lights and really like them. I just hope Ryan can hold it together.

    Serena Ryder

Just tucked this in the I Didn't Know That file - Kevin Breit (and Kurt Swinghammer) are part of the back-up crew on Serena Ryder's new CD. Maybe folks already knew that. Seems to me Kevin's guitar and Serena's voice should be a winning combination. Anyone heard it? She's got a cover of Cohen's Sisters of Mercy on there that I'm dying to hear.
  17. Let's hope he doesn't start to expose himself from the doorways of limos.
  18. We walked in a cloud of smoke She sold me over from the moment that she spoke Well they got me now I'll see you later Tell my baby that i really don't blame her. I'm out back to answer questions And with a gun they make suggestions What I should do What I should say Tell my baby that I loved her anyway. Mafia Sting - The Spades
  19. hey Mark thanks for the link. Impressive music...and impressive site. Nice to see the young folks struttin' their stuff. As well, nice of you and the other staff involved to put this on in the evening when parents and other folks from the community could come out and enjoy it. Well done
  20. Get real better real soon freak. My thoughts are with you.
  21. I own a lotta that stuff too. We're mavericks I tell ya! You're probably the only folks so far actually qualified to comment on the list
  22. Although the answer to this question has become obvious, I don't know that it's become clear (at least to me). Why wouldn't the NYE show @ the Pepperjack (or elsewhere) be pinned? Is it just their choice not to be?
  23. Outside of the early Doors, I wouldn't cross the street to defend any of them.
