Ceremony is perhaps the one song that most supports the argument that New Order is Joy Divison, but with a new name and the loss of its original lead singer. The song was written by Joy Divison, lyrics by Curtis, but was never officially studio recorded for release by Joy Division because Curtis died. A live JD version was later released posthumously, but 15 years after New Order released their studio recording. In fact, New Order's first single was Ceremony, but with Sumner on vocals. Ceremony is the transitional piece, and its just as much Joy Division as it is New Order. Stylistically, New Order ventured into areas very different from Joy Division, but to this day, many will argue (myself included) that they remain the same band that just went in a different direction after the death of their lead singer and simply changed their name.
