i made this chicken noodle soup the other day with a thai twist...velvet loved it (must be the PB). 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 2 boneless skinless chicken breast, chopped 1/2 tsp turmeric 1/4 tsp hot chilli powder 1/2 cup creamed coconut 4 cups hot chicken stock 2 Tbsp lemon or lime juice 2 Tbsp crunchy peanut butter 1 cup thin egg noodles, broken into small pieces 1 or 2 spring onions, chopped handful of fresh coriander, chopped s+p dried coconut and chopped fresh chilli or hot chilli flakes to garnish Heat 1 Tbsp oil in pan and fry garlic for 1 min. Add chicken and spices, stir fry for 3-4 min. Crumble the creamed coconut into the chicken stock and stir, then add to the pan with lemon, pb and noodles. Cover and simmer 15 min. Add spring onions, coriander, s+p and cook gently 5 min. Meanwhile heat the dried coconut and chilli in a pan until toasted and fragrant. serve the soup sprinkled with the coconut and chilli.

  6. We haven't got our tix yet but won't be going until April. I have read a bunch of books and stuff over the past year! Stoked. The food is supposed to be good there too  I think our route (subject to change of course and if you find some gems we need to add) will be south and west from Tana to stay in some Nat'l Parks (Velvet's favourite animal is the lemur) and end up on the west coast. I know what you mean, it is such a huge place, you have to pick just a few spots, it's hard! That's awesome you are going over with your job (both of you dudes). I need to get a job like that!
  7. Cool! I'll still buy a ticket in case of spot checks (got a huge fine once for that). We might only be transiting through SA. But thinking of looking into a quick Kruger park trip if it works into the schedule. Hope your first week at work goes well!
  8. kevo who do you work for? we changed our plans back to madagascar, but it's too bad we won't be there at the same time as you. i want details when you get back!!
  9. Fun read Hart! Looking forward to reading abput your upcoming adventures. And thanks for the Frankfurt tips. It's funny I was just reading in the Citizen yesterday about those padlock bridges in Germany!
  10. Sounds good! i have seen them before. i have not been to this venue before though... do you have your tix already?
  11. i made this stew tonight with whatever we had in the fridge. i usually make beef stew with guinness but we didn't have any so i used bacon beer. it came out really good. i made a fresh loaf of bread to eat with it. mmm measurements are approximate 1 kg stewing beef, cubed 3 slices bacon, diced 1 bottle bacon beer (or Guinness) 2 carrots, cut in half-inch pieces 3 stalks celery, cut in 1-inch pieces 1 onion, half large diced and half finely diced 1/2 green pepper, large dice 4 cloves garlic, peeled 1/2 cup or 1 cup pineapple juice 1/2 cup water 1 Tbsp onion chutney handful of chives, chopped Either use a pot/casserole that can go on the stove and in the oven, or use a steel pot on the stove then transfer to a casserole dish. Lightly coat the beef with salt, pepper and flour. Heat some oil in the pot on med-high and fry the beef in batches until brown on all sides. Remove beef to a plate or bowl. Turn down heat to medium and add bacon to the pan. Cook, stirring and scraping the bottom for a minute then add the onion as well. Add celery, carrot and garlic and keep cooking for 5 min. Add the bacon beer, pineapple juice, water and bring to a boil, stirring to deglaze. Add the beef and any juices from it, s&p, cover with lid (in casserole dish) and bake at 300 degrees for 1.5 hrs. (I then stirred, added a little bit of butter, sugar, and some onion chutney.) Remove the lid and bake for another hour or until everything is tender. (Add pineapple juice to taste) Add the chives and serve with bread or other starch.
  12. i've never much enjoyed the granville island beers been awhile though, maybe it's gotten better
  13. i dunno, it is getting chilly out there! i am ready for comfort food.
  14. yep, fun show but not memorable, pretty standard phish tunes. gorgeous weather, and a super awesome crew of "modern day 3.0 phans" (whatever that means) to hang out with all night. good times!
  15. made yer soup! i had such a huge squash that i was able to make a batch of your soup and a batch of bisque. the best was when there was leftovers of both, and i mixed the two together. it was yummy.
