This staple of the East Coast summer music scene will take place over the weekend of July 25-27, set in a spectacular location with breathtaking Atlantic coast vistas just outside Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. Evolve is a grassroots festival that has grown to become a showcase for music, environmental issues; and a celebration of the beauty that is uniquely Maritime. It is entirely dedicated to sustainable environmental stewardship; the largest festival of its kind in Canada. Thousands will enjoy, a significant percentage of which will travel from outside the province to enjoy three days of great music from over 40 different acts on multiple stages. Evolve strives to present the best musical performances of the summer, and this year is no exception. With new favourites and old, we will dance ourselves across the musical spectrum --from rock to jazz to funk, from world music, to hip hop, to electronica, and back again. From festival mainstays like Slowcoaster, Grand Theft Bus and the Gratefully Deadicated Soundsystem, to the return of the still-talked-about That One Guy, and Newfoundland's Hey Rosetta!, Evolve offers something for just about everyone's live music taste buds. And when the sun goes down, the DJs come out to shine – from Steve the Viking to Sonny D, Mizz Maxine to DJ Dono. Besides offering amazing music, Evolve is committed to being one of Canada's greenest events – and this year has upped the ante by declaring the festival to be zero-waste. Evolve strives to set a standard for sustainable festivals -- by utilizing renewable energy sources, using recycled paper and vegetable-based inks for all printed materials, biodegradable plates and utensils for food vending, organic cotton and hemp t-shirts, reducing waste and environmental impact and most significantly providing a forum to network and learn more about social and environmental issues. In addition, Evolve will plant a tree for every ticket sold, in cooperation with In Ticketing and Trees For the Future. Also on the holistic awareness tip, there will be a number of workshops offered in the Awareness Village. From the magic of wheatgrass, to straw bale construction, to yoga, massage, and Reiki, the festival has many opportunities to help you evolve your body, mind and soul. The three-day Evolve festival has general camping as well as a quiet/family camping area. There will be full-service facilities including running water, portable washrooms, clean drinking water, and shower/wash stations. There is also a kids' play zone with organized activities and music for the youngsters and, as usual, a vendor's area will offer a diverse range of scrumptious food to keep people energized. The vendors' area will also feature many unique crafts and garments. 4. Mention the 'Small World & nufunk list' and you'll get in for $20.. RACHID TAHA Tuesday, July 8, 9:00 @ The Phoenix Concert Theatre, 410 Sherbourne St. w/ DJ medicineman (CIUT 89.5 FM – ‘No Man’s Land’) Tickets: $30 advance @ www.smallworldmusic.com & Soundscapes Records (572 College St.) The music of Rachid Taha is a musically and socially potent mix of styles such as the raï of his native Algeria, techno, rock and punk. Now based in Paris, Taha is considered to be France’s first true punk-rocker, his sound having evolved over the past two decades into one that can rock dancefloors and mosh pits alike. He is an artist whose personal experience has made him a powerful spokesperson for democracy, tolerance and altruism – always speaking out against racism, fundamentalism and discrimination. Taha moved to France from Algeria in 1970. In 1981, while living in Lyon, Taha met Mohammed and Moktar Amini. The three of them, Rachid, Djamel Dif and Eric Vaquer would later form the band Carte de séjour, which is French for "residence permit". Taha indulged his natural appetite for challenging gestures and open revolt with Carte de Sejour. Stirring up a twister of outrage and irony, the group released an "Arabesque" cover of Charles Trenet’s "Douce France", (a sentimental wartime ballad beloved of nationalists.) Taha then persuaded President Francois Mitterand’s notorious minister of culture, Jack Laing, to distribute copies of the single to every member of the French parliament. The silver screen has also been instrumental in bringing Taha’s music to the world. The song "Barra Barra" from his album Made in Medina was featured in the 2001 film Black Hawk Down. His cover of ‘Rock the Casbah’, the immortal song by The Clash, appeared in The Future is Unwritten, the 2007 biography of the late Clash frontman Joe Strummer.

  10. I have been a fan of Oliver's for a couple of years - I stumbled across Stewed Tomatoes CD while I was living in Antigonish in 2003. Basically fell in love with his funky fiddle sound. My girlfriend and I were fortunate to go see Oliver Schroer's Tribute at Hugh's Room. It was said that Oliver was too ill, and could not be a part of the show - but that he was backstage listening and was enjoying the show. I stepped out to the washroom and on my way back the vibe of the room was much different - the music was very emotional and you could sense the vibe has changed dramatically. I sat down, and although not knowing what Ollie looked like, i sensed right away that it was him on stage - playing solo. Tears were pouring out of my eyes - the beauty of his playing was so striking. By the end of his solo performance - there wasn't a dry eye in the house - his story and emotive playing was so strong that even Sheila Rogers (the host) stumbled over her words as she wiped away the tears. This strikes close to home for me, my sister has been battling Leukemia for the past 4 years and has undergone a bone marrow transplant and is now living a healthy life. She is one of the few lucky ones. Our dear friend Shain lost his sister to Cancer and I offer my condolences to them and to all who've been afflicted by this disease. I just got this email - you can listen to the show next Wednesday: On Wednesday, July 9th, Canada Live will be rebroadcasting the Oli tribute that was produced 3 months ago. Tune in at 8:00 p.m. Radio 2, 1/2 later in Nfld. The concerts feature 100% Oliver Schroer music, spanning his entire career, and played in many different configurations, by artists such as The Stewed Tomatoes (Anne Lindsay, David Woodhead, David Travers-Smith, Ben Grossman, Colleen Allen), James Keelaghan, Jaime RT, Michelle George, Two Left (Tosh and Kit Weyman) and Bill Brennan, not to mention Oliver himself. Especially featured are the the "Twisted String Project" - seventeen kids, aged 9 through 18, led by two of Oliver's students. They raised the money through private donations to fly to Toronto from the B.C. coast, just so they could take part in the concerts. Canada Live rebroadcasts our document of the event, and gives a sense of the love felt for Oliver Schroer in words and music.
  11. Seun is more Fela then Femi. I still like Femi better - having met the man a couple of times - he's trying to do something more original with Afrobeat then Seun - I have massive respect for both of 'em.
  12. p.s. $30 tickets available at the door still lots of tickets available!
