  1. NOW MAGAZINE has review the new JSB Disc this week... http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/2007-01-11/music_discs2.php Disc Review: THE JIMMY SWIFT BAND Weight Of The World (Below Me Music) Rating: NNN Halifax's Jimmy Swift Band sometimes describe their sound as rocktronica, but that's not terribly accurate. Sure, they do have a keyboard player who drops some synth textures here and there, but this is primarily alternative rock music with some jam band tendencies. They're all good players and execute their genre-hopping pretty seamlessly. But even if their interest in electronic music isn't that prominent in the actual music, the influence of dance music on the rhythm section may be what keeps them from falling into that plodding, boring whine that too much alt-rock succumbs to. The Jimmy Swift Band play Saturday (January 13) at the Horseshoe.

  10. well the cover looks pretty cool... whats wrong with it? Songwriting or maybe the choices of instrumentation??
  11. Islands has one of my all-time favorite songs, the house remix of GTB's "Low" Best thing about this CD is that there was multiple artwork for the front cover and the CD themselves were hand draw. Recomended CD for fans of house, minimal techno & Grand Theft Bus.
  12. the Space Cake.. now that's a story!! Grateful Dave (not Dr. Evil Mouse) and I spoke only a week before the show and he said he'd make a space cake for the show, for backstage... Anyways he shows up with 2 fairly big cakes... actually about 50 pieces!! that evening there was some construction happening in the backstage room, so there was no backstage to stash the cakes, instead we had it at the front door. Thinking it was pretty weak space cake, and we had lots of it, I annouced it on stage after Mark Wilson's set that there was bithrday 'space' cake available to anyone interested. After two pieces and about half and hour, I was a mess.. I ended up onstage with Caution Jam almost unable to move or play. It was at that time that I found out the owner of the place, who incidentally also consumed 2 piece of cake, was rushed to the hospital because he started to feel "weird & emotional". I remember not being able to say more than a couple words at a time, my body froze up! Incidentally things did get worse, my car was towed. Luckily everything worked out.. and they've subsequently forgave me at the EL Mo. add that story to Can Jam folklore!

  16. yikes! I bet it smells funky at the JB Mansion! **** James Brown's Body Remains Unburied Two Weeks Later Amid Wrangling Over His Estate Wednesday, January 10, 2007 COLUMBIA, S.C. — The body of soul singer James Brown has yet to be buried as attorneys and his children work to settle issues surrounding his estate, including where he will be laid to rest. For now, his body lies in his home on Beech Island, said Charles Reid, manager of the C.A. Reid Funeral Home in Augusta, Ga., which handled the services. Brown died of heart failure Dec. 25 at age 73. His will has yet to be filed, said Buddy Dallas, an attorney for the singer. Brown's home has been locked since hours after his death to protect his memorabilia, furnishing, clothes and other personal items, Dallas said. "Just imagine what would have happened," Dallas said. "Items of James Brown would have left there like items off the shelves of Macy's in an after-Christmas sale." The trustees for his will, along with Brown's children, will determine the burial site, Dallas said. Tomi Rae Hynie, Brown's partner, said shortly after his death that she encountered locked gates as she tried to get into the home she says she shared with the singer and their 5-year-old son. She wouldn't discuss the incident Tuesday, but her lawyer said Hynie should be granted access to the home, although he would not talk about whether Hynie might take legal action. "The hope is that all parties can sit down and figure out what the problem is and what the challenges are," attorney Thornton Morris said. "And once we figure out what the challenges are we'll see if we can't resolve something that's a win for everybody." Meanwhile, a woman who claims Brown raped her nearly 20 years ago said Tuesday she will continue her lawsuit. Jacque Hollander has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear her sexual harassment suit, which a lower court ruled last year she had waited too long to file. A Supreme Court decision on whether to hear the case is pending. She argues that the two-year statute of limitations in such cases does not provide equal protection to women. "This has been a long road that ended tragically Christmas morning," Hollander said in a phone interview with the Associated Press. "As a rape victim, I will never get to face him in court, and it hurts," she said. "But we are moving forward. We filed against his organization, as well as him. So now his organization stands in front of him." In her lawsuit, Hollander said Brown raped her at gunpoint in 1988 while she was his publicist. She seeks $106 million in damages. A federal appeals court tossed out Hollander's lawsuit in August. "There was nothing to it 20 years ago and nothing to it 20 years later," Dallas said.
